The Czech Nation: Between Czechoslovak and Czech Nationalism

2009

According to a popular saying, when Czechoslovakia was founded in 1918, it became an Austria-Hungary in miniature. This historian’s simile indicated that the nation-state of the Czechoslovaks displayed all the good and undesirable features of the Dual Monarchy. On the positive side, it was the only Central European polity where democracy survived throughout the interwar period. In general, the state was a welcoming home to three nations (the Czechs, Slovaks, and Ruthenians), and three sizeable minorities (Germans, Magyars, and Poles). The Czechoslovak economy (concentrated in the Czech lands, formerly Austria-Hungary’s most significant powerhouse) was the strongest in the region and enabled…

Politics of Dark Tourism: The Case of Cromañón and ESMA, Buenos Aires, Argentina

2018

Tourism has been recently catalogued as a key global industry (Shaw et al. 1990; Buckley and Witt, 1990; Lee and Chang, 2008). The influx of visitors not only potentially revitalises cultural resources but also generates economic resources of specific destinations. Recently, even spaces of mass-death or disasters such as Ground Zero in New York (9/11 terrorist attack), the Tsunami on Sri Lanka, or Katrina Hurricane hitting New Orleans, USA, can be ‘recycled’ by adopting tourism policies that take death as a main attraction (Klein, 2007). Although this type of tourism has attracted criticism of post-Marxist sociologists, as the sign of sadist spectacle (Bloom 2000; Baudrillard 1996, 2006; Ko…

2012

This article examines the developments occurred in the Italian banking system during the second half of the 20th century from the point of view of the banker’s major professional association, the Associazione Bancaria Italiana (ABI). In doing so we shall profit from a huge amount of archival sources emerging from two previous books that the authors published on the …

STAATSTÄTIGKEIT UND MULTIPLIKATOR IN DEN SCHRIFTEN LUDWIG GALLS-EINE DOGMENGESCHICHTLICHE ERGÄNZUNG ZUR BESCHÄFTIGUNGSTHEORIE

1969

SUMMARY The German author Heinrich Ludwig Lambert Gall (1794-1863) who is characterized as socialist by the authors of histories of economic thought proposed a policy for full employment, based on the multiplier-principle and public expenditures financed by taxes, since 1822. Not Rodbertus but Gall was the first one describing the multiplier scheme. The interpretation of Gall's publications shows his important ideas about interventionism similar to the modern theory of full employment and the activity of the state.
