Two Family Firms in Comparison: Ahlström and Schauman During the 20th Century
2006
Ahlstrom and Schauman are among the most prominent companies in Finnish industrial history, being family firms engaged in different branches of economic activity. At first both were mechanical wood processing companies, but diversified later into the pulp and paper industry as well. Ahlstrom is even still today an important paper producer, whilst Schauman merged in 1987 with the Kymmene Corporation, and is nowadays a part of the UPM-Kymmene Corporation. This paper analyses the strategic decision processes undertaken in the named companies during the 20 century. The companies were not the most typical ones in the Finnish wood processing industry, but were, perhaps, typical examples of old fa…
Banks, Firms and Economic Culture: Economists and Research Centres in Interwar Italy
2020
In the interwar years, Italy experimented a strong growth of applied economic research. The foundation of research centers can be read and placed in a much wider international trend that emerged during the Great War. In this essay, we offer a map of the most important research centers, exploring the extensive web of relationships between the academia and the productive world. We then focus on a set of case studies, selected for their relevance. Section 2 is devoted to the banking sector, with reference to four important cases (Banca Commerciale Italiana, Banca d’Italia, Associazione Bancaria Italiana and Banco di Sicilia); section 3 to the industrial sector (IRI, Finsider, Ansaldo, Edison, …

Seeing the Invisible: The Introduction and Development of Electron Microscopy in Britain, 1935–1945
2013
INTRODUCTIONSpring, 1941. The German campaigns in the Balkans are strengthening the Nazi domination of continental Europe. The Lend-Lease bill signed by Roosevelt on 1 1 March has broken any neutrality pretence of the USA. War material is being sold, transferred or leased to the Allied nations in the name of assisting US defence. The war is about to become global and US and British leaders discuss strategy in the event that the USA finally enters actively into the war. In this context, the British physicist Charles Galton Darwin (1887-1962) is appointed Director of the British Central Scientific Office in Washington - an institution conceived to promote closer contact and exchange of inform…
La industria del cómic en España: radiografía de ¿un mito o una realidad?
2011
In spite of the importance of figures referred to published titles, or number of copies printed, which help to set publishing strategies and to really know the comic situation in Spain, there are no liable data. We are giving in this article, some enlightening data along with some explanations related to the evolution of the market from 2001 to 2009. The different titles are grouped considering the place they come from (Europe, Asia, United States…), along with their format (album, book, magazine, comic-book…). Using all this information, we can deduce evolution lines, tendencies, futures perspectives in an industry that, despite its precariousness, is facing an increasing number of copies …

Frank H. Knight on social values in economic consumption: an archival note
2020
We reproduce an unpublished address on “Social Values in Economic Consumption” which Knight prepared for a SSRC Conference in June 1931. This material sheds new light on Knight in two respects. First, anticipating what is known as the relative income hypothesis, Knight indicated that a general increase in income, not only leaves the individual’s relative position in society unaltered but makes her/his situation worse off due to the peculiar characteristics of the market for “personal services.” Second, this address provides further evidence of how, in spite of some substantial methodological differences, Knight’s research interests converged with those of the institutionalists.
Touristificacion in the Central Market of Valencia
2020
This chapter analyses the relationship between cultural heritage and the tourism activity in the ongoing context of globalisation. It establishes the debate among society and tourism considering the process of touristification and its impact in cultural heritage, addressed initially to locals. Concretely, this investigation is focused on Valencia's Central Market, Spain, as a case study. By fieldwork research methods (direct observation and a questionnaire), a diagnosis of the central market's situation and its consumers' perception is presented, which reflects the transformation that it is suffering because of the tourism activity. A process of touristification has been identified in some …
