Albert O. Hirschman wrote the reports collected in this book while in the employ of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Almost all of them appeared in the Review of Foreign Developments, which ran from 1945 to 1975. The reports, which were usually marked “Confidential” or “Restricted,” are now in the public domain but remain the intellectual creations of Hirschman.*

The paper outlines an ongoing study on the free port of Messina, in the context of the historiographical reappraisal on the establishment of free ports in the Mediterranean in the Early Modern Age. Adopting a diachronic approach, it summarizes the purposes and issues that affected its outcomes, from 1695 throughout the entire 18th century: its rules and the institutional turning points, the economic debates, and some critical issues like the franchise area, the trade of local goods (wheat, silk, oil), smuggling, mercantile justice and safe-conduct.

Il ruolo dei magazzini del Peculio frumentario di Messina e dei suoi funzionari in epoca moderna è distinto in tre momenti con impostazioni economiche diverse. Nella prima fase (1591-1687) i magazzini sono amministrati in modo sleale nei confronti delle finanze pubbliche e l’annona si indebita nei confronti della stessa élite urbana che esprime i funzionari. Nella seconda, tra la repressione della rivolta antispagnola e l’inizio della monarchia borbonica, il potere centrale riprendere il con trollo sulle classi dirigenti locali anche in campo annonario, e la gestione dei magazzini pubblici acquista rigore e importanza a causa delle proibizioni ai privati di importare direttamente il grano. …

This paper analyzes the stone sector in Sicily in the period 2007-2009, with particular reference to the system of Custonaci, one of the representative sites of the Sicilian marble. The sector has gone through a deep crisis aggravated by structural elements such as the lack of coordination between operators. In this paper, we investigate the contrasting business strategies and models adopted by two major Italian public banks in the 1930s. Monte dei Paschi di Siena and Banco di Sicilia are interesting case studies for a number of reasons: their strong regional connections; their prolonged struggle for political independence from the national monetary authorities; their common attempt to modify the scale and scope of their business with the creation of integrated banking groups; and their early internationalization of activities.
