This paper aims at discussing the effects of the crisis at the social level and at identifying whether the classic European welfare state models (Nordic, Continental, Anglo-Saxon and Mediterranean) are still valid in today’s economy. Abstract The literature considers nonviolent protests among the most important predictors of transitions towards democracy and democratic reforms. The effects of populism as a social identity frame on persuasion and mobilization: evidence from a 15-country experiment

This article investigates the impact of populist messages on issue agreement and readiness for action in 15 countries (N = 7,286). Specifically, populist communicators rely on persuasive strategies by which social group cues become more salient and affect people's judgment of and political engagement with political issues. This strategy is called ‘populist identity framing’ because the ordinary people as the in‐group is portrayed as being threatened by various out‐groups. By blaming political elites for societal or economic problems harming ordinary people, populist communicators engage in anti‐elitist identity framing. Plural gifting of singular importance: mass-gifts and sociality among precarious product promoters in eastern Germany

In this article I explore and investigate the concept of ‘mass-gifts’ (Bird-David and Darr), based on fieldwork in eastern Germany among product promoters in wholesale and retail environments. After introducing mass-gifts, I show how they are employed by promoters for the intended purpose (persuading customers to purchase). However, mass-gifts are also appropriated by these precarious workers to create social networks. In so doing, I argue that they simultaneously recreate the social aesthetic of work in the state socialist era, where factories were a nexus of sociality – in stark reality to the social and economic precariousness faced today by promoters.
Conflictos ambientales y ciudadanía ecológica: el caso de Gualeguaychú y los pulp mills

This article deals with interactions between citizenship and political ecology by examining the ‘pulp mills conflict’ in Gualeguaychú, Argentina. The conflict burst in 2003 when the Uruguayan authorities announced the construction of a cellulose plant on the shore of the Uruguay River. The citizens of Gualeguaychú, a city right across the border, initiated a movement of protest that soon transcended the local dimension. I argue that this protest was a battle over sovereignty and an environmental conflict between different conceptions of development and diverse views of the use of a common resource, the river.
