‘Landscape of exception’: Power inequalities and ethical planning challenges in the landscape transformation of south-eastern Sicily
2021
In some marginal contexts of Southern Italy, in light of specific economic, political and social conditions, certain relationships between ‘strong powers’ and ‘weak powers’ produce a suspension of norms/rights that is, paradoxically, ‘normalised’. This creates a particular spatial variation of Agamben’s (2005) state of exception concept: the ‘landscape of exception’. With respect to the possible conditions of ‘exception’, this article describes the ‘landscape of exception’ of the greenhouse system in South-Eastern Sicily. This ‘landscape of exception’ is generated by the greenhouses, in particular those dedicated to vegetable production, through an effective mechanism of spatial manipulati…
Higher education and economic development in the OECD: policy lessons for other countries and regions
2016
ABSTRACTThis paper sheds light on the role of tertiary or higher education in economic development across two successful OECD case studies: Finland and South Korea. A number of key aspects are discussed, from the nature of the social contract between higher education and the economy to the endogenous characteristics of domestic higher education to the links between the sector and regional development, innovation and the labour market. The lessons learned are of importance to policy makers and institutional planners across the world, not least to less developing nations and regions, due to the unprecedented opportunities brought by a global, knowledge-based economy.
Recent Evolutions of the Social Economy in the European Union
2017
The general objective of the Report is to study the recent evolution of the social economy in the European Union. It focuses on three areas: firstly, the social economy and the emergent concepts/movements related to it, secondly, the public policies adopted in both the EU and the member states in recent years to enhance the social economy sector and thirdly, measuring the weight of the social economy in each EU member country. This Report shows that the European social economy provides over 13.6 million paid jobs in Europe, accounting for 6.3% of the total EU working population of the EU-28. Despite its size, the social economy remains invisible in the national accounts and statistics aroun…
2017
What happens when neither the institutions nor the official law are able to cover the basic needs of subsistence and a decent life of an individual or group of people? Do they have, in these situations, a right to self-enforceability of rights? This article will analyze this issue and the main debates associated with it, focusing on the different experiences and types of self-enforceability of the right to work that have occurred in Spain during the last years following the 2007-2008. In particular, it will be analyzed different cases of factory recovery and land occupation and self-management looking at the differences between these two forms of self-executing of the right to work.
Religion and Social Integration ‘Crises’ in North Western Europe: Some Conclusions
2013
My investigation of religion-related social integration crises in four North West European societies in the period 2001–11 began with the English case and the riots in some Northern English cities of 2001. In concluding I shall start again with this case, bringing it together with the Dutch, French and Northern Irish evidence we have now considered, and with my findings across each of the dimensions examined (segregation, media, institutional forms of multiculturalism and secularism, far-right and post-liberal mobilisation and national cultural trauma). Since much attention has been given to factors which shape conflict and influence the construction of prejudice, and especially to the nega…
Soluzioni tecnologiche e lotta al Covid-19: una riflessione critica
2023
Technological solutions and the fight against Covid-19. A critical reflection – Digital technologies have played a decisive role in the definition and implementation of measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, from the dissemination of information to the monitoring of behavior. Yet their use has not always achieved the desired effects. By reviewing the case of tracking apps, this contribution aims to take stock of the role of technologies and the private sector during the pandemic emergency and to reason about the causes of their failure.
The Social Policy Index: It's Applicability in Latin American Countries
2014
Social Policy is a tool employed by states to intervene in society with an aim of reducing the effects of poverty and inequality by meeting people's basic needs. The question is how do we measure social policy? In 2006, the United Nations Organization proposed a Social Policy Index (SPI), a methodological tool to measure social policy, with the aim of understanding the current regimes of economic and social structures in each country. The SPI suggests quantifying the elements of social policy, without focusing on their results, preferring to identify how the policy and the efforts of each government are materialized in some social indexes like social spending, social security, taxes, and in…
CSR in Germany: A European Perspective
2020
The chapter starts with a short discussion of the roots of CSR and then analyzes the role of CSR within the European Union. Subsequently, it focuses on CSR in Germany and contends that hardly any independent CSR movement emerged in the country. Instead, Germany mainly adopted impulses from the international and European discussion which were integrated in the already existing social systems and institutions.
