Enzyme-assisted extraction of anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds from blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) press cake: From processing to bioactivit…
2022
The effects of commercial enzymes (pectinases, cellulases, beta-1-3-glucanases, and pectin lyases) on the recovery of anthocyanins and polyphenols from blackcurrant press cake were studied considering two solid:solvent ratios (1:10 and 1:4 w/v). β-glucanase enabled the recovery of the highest total phenolic content – 1142 mg/100 g, and the extraction of anthocyanins was similar using all enzymes (∼400 mg/100 g). The use of cellulases and pectinases enhanced the extraction of antioxidants (DPPH − 1080 mg/100 g; CUPRAC – 3697 mg/100 g). The freeze-dried extracts presented antioxidant potential (CUPRAC, DPPH), which was associated with their biological effects in different systems: antiviral a…
You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant: l’ home restaurant tra libertà di iniziativa economica, tutela del consumatore e della concorren…
2020
The essay starts with a comparison between the different definitions of the concept of home restaurant proposed by experts, suppliers, home cookers, on-line platforms, and the one provided by a bill drafted during the XVII legislature. The Author describes the activity of those who offer such kind of service in the market, proposing some reflections on the nature of such activity, on the necessity of ensuring food’s health standards, on consumer’s health and wealth, on the protection of competitors professional restaurant’s cookers (if they can be considered as such), on the mechanisms through which demand and offer match together through on-line platforms, social networks or apps. These is…
Promoting Research and Landscape Experience in the Management of the Archaeological Networks. A Project-Valuation Experiment in Italy
2020
Archaeological sites are part of the history and identity of a community playing a strategic role on the different scales of the cultural and economic common life. Whereas on the one end the most famous archaeological sites attract huge flows of tourists and investment, on the other hand, many minor archaeological sites remain almost ignored and neglected. This study proposes a project-evaluation approach devoted to the &ldquo
An Atom-Economical Approach to Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: Reaction with Disulfides
2013
Owing to their unique structure, thermal stability, and mechanical and electronic properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been a subject of continuous and intense interest. However, various applications in many fields, such as molecular electronics, solar cells, and nanomedicine, often require the development of reproducible protocols for the chemical modification of SWCNTs. In fact, one of the main drawbacks of the use of SWCNTs is their tendency to aggregate and intrinsic poor solubility, which prevent their manipulation and limit their potential. To date, several methods have been described for the chemical functionalization of SWCNTs; however, new versatile and reliable…
Omega-3 Extraction from Anchovy Fillet Leftovers with Limonene: Chemical, Economic, and Technical Aspects
2019
International audience; We investigate selected chemical, technical, and economic aspects of the production of fish oil rich in polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids from anchovy filleting leftovers using d-limonene as the extraction solvent at ambient temperature and pressure. Entirely derived from the orange peel prior to orange squeezing for juice production, the bio-based solvent is easily recovered, affording a circular economy process with significant potential for practical applications.
Recent Developments in the Finnish Banking Sector
2000
In this paper we discuss recent developments in the Finnish banking sector. Our specific aim is to examine whether and to what extent recent developments in Finland are broadly in line with the trends common to banking sectors in Europe and also worldwide. We focus on developments in banks' profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and the market structure of the banking sector. In addition, technological developments are surveyed. As regards consolidation, the Finnish banking sector is a trendsetter. The emphasis in structural development has moved to cross-border banking and bank assurance. On the other hand, it turns out that it is difficult to track some of the trends that are believed t…
Multiple Scenario Analysis of Battery Energy Storage System Investment: Measuring Economic and Circular Viability
2022
Circular business models for batteries have been revealed in earlier research to achieve economic viability while reducing total resource consumption of raw materials. The objective of this study is to measure the economic performance of the preferred business model by creating different scenarios comparing second life (spent) and new battery investment for seven different European regions and four energy management strategies. Findings reveal levels of economic ability for a total of 34 scenarios simulated, including direct savings per kWh, a total change in energy costs per year, battery charge/discharge cycles, and comparative breakeven analyses. Regional effects are also measured based …
A Comparative Analysis of the Social Performance of Global and Local Berry Supply Chains
2016
The goal of this paper is twofold: to comparatively analyze the social performance of global and local berry supply chains and to explore the ways in which the social dimension is embedded in the overall performance of food supply chains. To achieve this goal, the social performance of five global and local food supply chains in two countries are analyzed: wild blueberry supply chains in Latvia and cultivated raspberry supply chains in Serbia. The study addresses two research questions: (1) What is the social performance of the local and global supply chains? (2) How can references to context help improve understanding of the social dimension and social performance of food supply chains? To…
Dried-fruit shell reuse in green construction and building materials
2023
Bio-architecture is a new way of designing and building in line with the European Green Deal and in light of the circular economy principles. This new green approach is guiding the entire construction life cycle toward eco-sustainability and environmental friendliness, from the beginning to the end of the building process. In addition to the use of environmentally-friendly and high-performance building and construction materials, it is necessary to use new technologies that can reduce the environmental footprint. This paper aims to examine the possible reuse of biological wastes of agricultural origin of the Mediterranean basin, whose massive production generates a number of problems for th…
