Birth and growth in new metal‐based manufacturing and business service firms in Finland

2001

This study examined factors influencing the growth of new firms in metal‐based manufacturing and business services in Finland over the three first years of their operation. The factors affecting the growth of a new firm were found in the start‐up phase, in the characteristics of the entrepreneur and of the firm, and in the firm’s environment. Growth was especially explained by the know‐how and changes in the strategic behaviour of the entrepreneur and by the firm’s environment. New firmshad equal chances for growth irrespective of their locality. Instead, growth was affected by changes in a firm’s competitive situation, and, especially in the more developed service centres, growth was depen…

Tourism Activity of Member States and Romania's Place within the First Five Years after EU Accession

2013

Abstract This paper is a brief statistical analysis of the evolution of tourism in the EU-27 in the first five years after Romania's accession. The analysis was based on official data published by Eurostat regarding the tourist accommodation capacity by categories, the number of arrivals and overnight stays of tourists and non-residents. I highlighted each time Romania's place within Member States, preferring graphics that are more suggestive than synthetic data tables. In conclusions I have highlighted the changes occurred in Romania, far from those expected after five years as a member of the European Union.

New Inhabitants for the Re-use of Historical Territories in South-Eastern Sicily

2021

In spite of the multifaceted criticalities that characterise the Sicilian territory, South-Eastern Sicily appears to be of particular interest due to the active role that distinguishes it from the rest of the Island. The transformation processes taking place in South-Eastern Sicily, in fact, seem to be guided by new perspectives of sustainability, local development and good governance. The mix obtained from the extraordinary amount of tangible and intangible resources, from some favourable socio-cultural circumstances and from the creation of new transportation infrastructures, has contributed to promoting new forms of reuse of the historical building heritage by Italian and overseas invest…

2017

The aim of this article is to introduce the evolution of the private sport sector in Hungary. First, taking a historical viewpoint into account, the emergence of the private sport sector will be sketched from the 1800s to date. It is reasonable to say that with some exceptional periods such as the state socialist era, the private sport sector in Hungary has always been present, but its scope and forms of function have been adapted to the current social, political, and economic environments. Second, statistical data will be presented to show the structure and volume of the private sport sector using data from 2013. Public Opinion, National Integration and National Identity in Spain: The Case of the Barcelona Olympic Games

1997

. This article analyses the impact of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games on national integration and national identity in Spain with respect to the conflict of interests that developed around the Games between the centre and Catalonia. We argue that polarisation along nationalist lines was limited in large part because national identity in Spain today is not predominantly a unitary and exclusive entity. Dual identity, loyalty to both Spain, on the one hand, and to one's region, or nation as in the case of Catalonia, on the other, and inclusive nationalism that does not aim at complete national independence, increasingly have tended to predominate in the last decade and a half. The Olympics, t…

2018

Introduction Given the changing nature of employment, including the long term shift from manufacturing and agriculture to the service sector, an increasing proportion of the workforce is engaged in employment which is less physically demanding but which brings with it a range of stress-related and psycho-social risks. Eurofound (2006) estimated that in 2005, 20% of EU-15 workers reported health related risk due to work-related stress and the EU OSHA (2007) has identified high emotional demands and work intensification as key emerging psychosocial risks for the occupational health and safety of workers. Methods This paper draws on the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey to examine differ…
