The focus on island contexts stems from the fact that they present peculiarities related not only to the morphology of the territory but also to the economic and social system that characterises them. The territory of the European Union includes more than 3,000 islands in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Basins and the Caribbean. It analyses social economy at three cognitive levels: first, as a social reality (Social Economy); second, as a scientific discipline which studies its previous reality (the science of Social Economy); third, as a methodological approach in social sciences (the approach of Social Economy). The author claims that, at these three levels, social economy becomes an alternative way of “making the economy”.

This paper analyses the effect of regional financial development and bank competition on firms' growth using the Spanish provinces as a testing ground. The results show that firms in industries with a greater dependence on external finance grow faster in more financially developed provinces. The results also show that bank monopoly power has an inverted-‘U’ effect on firms' growth, suggesting that market power has its highest effect at intermediate values. As Romania has joined the European Union, the European currency must be adopted even though it may raise some problems regarding conversion, the impact on goods and services expenses on the interior market having a direct effect on the population and the national economy because we don’t know which the trajectory of the Euro will be. This paper takes a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the adoption of the unique currency in our country taking into account the time factor and the behaviour we must have regarding the Euro, establishing the issues we must take a close look at when the initial term of adoption must be respected.
REFLEXIONS ON THE ROMANIAN HIGHER EDUCATION AND GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT

The objective of the paper is to provide an insight on the Romanian higher education and to analyse the graduate employment in Romania during the 2006-2010 period. The conclusions reveal that the Romanian graduate employment registered a continuous decrease in its figures during the whole analysed period.
