Effects of heavy metals on earthworms along contamination gradients in organic rich soils.

Earthworm communities and metal (bio)availability to earthworms along contamination gradients was studied in order to support chemical analyses in risk assessment of metal contaminated soils. Earthworms were sampled in three metal contaminated areas with different habitat and soil properties in Finland. Earthworm and soil samples were collected at three distances (1, 2, and 4 km) from the emission sources. Earthworms were identified as to species and analyzed for heavy metals. Model ecosystem for environmental transport of xenobiotics

A compartmentalized aquatic-terrestrial flow-through model ecosystem was constructed for studying the transport of agricultural chemicals from the soil to the aquatic environment in soil drainage. Factors were investigated on the fate of reference toxicant,14C-DDT, in the subsystems of the model. The behavior of DDT corresponds to its behavior in natural soil/water systems. The soil, acting as a reservoir, retained most of the DDT. The transportation of DDT to the aquatic compartment was negligible, with low availability to the aquatic biota. Because of the dynamic nature of the model, variation was evident between and within model units.

Partitioning of nanoparticle-originated dissolved silver in natural and artificial sediments

Sediments are believed to be a major sink for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the aquatic environment, but there is a lack of knowledge about the environmental effects and behavior of AgNPs in sediments. The release of highly toxic Ag+ through dissolution of AgNPs is one mechanism leading to toxic effects in sediments.
