Particle transport in recirculated liquid metal flows

2008

PurposeAims to present recent activities in numerical modeling of turbulent transport processes in induction crucible furnace.Design/methodology/approach3D large eddy simulation (LES) method was applied for fluid flow modeling in a cylindrical container and transport of 30,000 particles was investigated with Lagrangian approach.FindingsParticle accumulation near the side crucible boundary is determined mainly by the ρp/ρ ratio and according to the presented results. Particle settling velocity is of the same order as characteristic melt flow velocity. Particle concentration homogenization time depends on the internal flow regime. Separate particle tracks introduce very intensive mass exchang…

Effect of the height-to-diameter ratio on the mass transfer and mixing performance of a biotrickling filter

2017

BACKGROUND Biotrickling filters (BTFs) are among the most widely used biological technologies for air pollution control. The pollutant removal rate in BTFs relies to a large extent on its gas–liquid mass transfer performance. Therefore, knowledge of the design parameters affecting the mass transfer and mixing performance of full-scale BTFs is of paramount importance. RESULTS This work showed that the height-to-diameter (H/D) ratio is an important parameter in the design of BTFs devoted to air pollution control. The H/D ratio significantly affected the mass transfer and mixing performance of the BTF with and without additional stirring in the holding tank. It was observed that under the same…

Improving the Efficiency of NFC Systems Through Optimizing the Sintered Ferrite Sheet Thickness Selection

2020

The reduction of embedded portable devices involves a magnetic field interference problem when it integrates near field communication (NFC) due to the presence of conductive surfaces, such as ground planes, batteries, or metallic enclosures. Flexible sintered ferrite sheets (FSFS) represent an interesting shielding solution to prevent electromagnetic interferences problems related to NFC, thanks to their ability to control the magnetic flux. The characterization of FSFS effectiveness is analyzed as a function of the sheet thickness in this contribution. This is performed with the aim of determining which is the optimum thickness value to retune an NFC antenna to its original operation frequ…

Turbulence structures over irregular rough surfaces

2010

Turbulent flow in a channel with irregular two-dimensional rough surfaces is analysed through wall-resolving large eddy simulation (LES). Both walls of the channel are roughened through the superimposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitude and four different wavelengths. The downward shift of the velocity profile in the log region due to the roughness, known as roughness function, is well captured in the simulations. The spanwise and wall-normal turbulence intensities are found to increase with the roughness height, while the streamwise component decreases. The analysis of the Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor highlights a tendency towards isotropisation, confirmed by the vort…

Eddy-Current Imaging with Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

2018

We demonstrate microwave-free eddy-current imaging using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. By detecting the eddy-current induced magnetic field of conductive samples, we can distinguish between different materials and shapes and identify structural defects. Our technique allows for the discrimination of different materials according to their conductivity. The sensitivity of the measurements is calculated as 8$\times 10 ^{5}$\,S/m\,$\sqrt[]{\textrm{Hz}}$ at 3.5\,MHz, for a cylindrical sample with radius $r_0$\,=\,1\,mm and height $h$\,=\,0.1\,mm (volume $\sim$\,0.3\,mm$^3$), at a distance of 0.5\,mm. In comparison with existing technologies, the diamond-based device exhibits a superior ba…

Rapid nanocrystallization of soft-magnetic amorphous alloys using microwave induction heating

2009

The crystallization of Fe73Nb3Cu1Si16B7 alloy during microwave heating was investigated in situ using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction. The phase transformation comprises a primary nanocrystallization stage and a final microcrystallization step. We provide evidence for a strong enhancement of the transformation kinetics. Microwave heating occurs as a result of both ohmic and magnetic losses induced by eddy currents, which defines a volumetric microwave induction heating process. Nanocrystallization is completed within 5 s, while full crystallization is achieved in less than 10 s.

Design approach for high efficiency NFC systems with magnetic shielding materials

2020

The performance of a Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna may be diminished when it is placed close to any conductive surface such as a metallic case or a battery. This degradation is caused due to the stray magnetic field created by the eddy currents induced on the surface, which is opposite to the intended field generated by the NFC antenna. One of the first solutions that come to mind to designers when facing this problem is the use of high permeability magnetic shielding based on sintered ferrite sheets. This is a good approach but something that is not generally taken into account is that these materials introduce an additional inductance to the NFC antenna. If the permeability of th…

Deformation analysis of ATHENA test filters made of plastic thin films supported by a mesh under differential static pressure

2019

Within ESA Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Science Program, ATHENA was selected to be a Large-class high energy astrophysics space mission. The observatory will be equipped with two interchangeable focal plane detectors named X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) and Wide Field Imager (WFI). In order to optimally exploit the detector sensitivity, X-ray transparent filters are required. Such filters need to be extremely thin to maximize the X-ray transparency, that is, no more than a few tens of nm, still they must be able to sustain the severe stresses experienced during launch. Partially representative test filters were made with a thin polypropylene film, coated with Ti, and supported by a thin highl…

Transmission Attenuation Power Ratio Analysis of Flexible Electromagnetic Absorber Sheets Combined with a Metal Layer.

2018

Electromagnetic noise absorber sheets have become a solution for solving complex electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems due to their high magnetic losses. This contribution is focused on characterizing a novel structure that is based on an absorber film with a metal layer attached on its top side. Two different absorber compositions were combined with Al and Cu metal layers in order to study the improvement on the performance of these structures, depending on the complex permeability, absorber film thickness, and type of metal. The transmission attenuation power ratio of the absorber films is analyzed and compared to the performance of absorber and metal structures. The measurement pro…
