Definition, aims, and implementation of GA [sup] 2 LEN/HAEi Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence

2020

This document summarizes the aims of GA2 LEN/HAEi Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence (ACAREs) and elaborates the requirements that ACAREs must fulfill to become certified. It also provides (see Appendix S1) background information on GA2LEN and HAEi, including HAEi member organizations and regional patient advocates, on why we need an Angioedema Center of Reference and Excellence (ACARE) program and network, and on the accreditation and certification process, governance and funding, and on the interaction with other GA2LEN networks of centers of reference and excellence. The protocols, aims, requirements, and provisions related to becoming a certified CARE are based on (a) the ex…

Positive Effect of Steroids in Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome

2019

We present a case of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome with severe clinical manifestation. Apart from initial aphasia, hemiparesis, and a generalized seizure, the patient had a prolonged loss of consciousness. Although blood pressure was normalized, the clinical status deteriorated continuously. After adding steroids to the therapy, the patient recovered rapidly, suggesting that this could have been a useful therapeutic approach. Even the vasogenic edema in the cerebral magnetic resonance imaging disappeared shortly within 6 days.

Efficacy and safety of a new hyaluronic acid dermal filler in the treatment of severe nasolabial lines - 6-month interim results of a randomized, eva…

2011

Summary Background  Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are frequently used for the correction of facial soft tissue defects. Aim  To compare the efficacy and safety of a novel HA filler, HAE (Emervel Deep), with those of HAP (Restylane Perlane) in the treatment of severe nasolabial folds (NLF). Patients/Methods  A split-face, randomized and evaluator-blinded comparison study. Subjects were randomized to receive injection of HAE or HAP on their left or right NLF. Efficacy was evaluated based on the change in Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) from baseline. Local tolerability was assessed based on subject diary during the first 3 weeks after injection. Adverse events were also evaluated. Results…

Evidence-based recommendations for the therapeutic management of angioedema owing to hereditary C1 inhibitor deficiency: consensus report of an Inter…

2011

Angioedema owing to hereditary deficiency of C1 inhibitor (HAE) is a rare, life-threatening, disabling disease. In the last 2 years, the results of well-designed and controlled trials with existing and new therapies for this condition have been published, and new treatments reached the market. Current guidelines for the treatment for HAE were released before the new trials and before the new treatments became available and were essentially based on observational studies and expert opinion. To provide evidence-based HAE treatment guidelines supported by the new studies, a conference was held in Gargnano del Garda, Italy, from September 26 to 29, 2010. The meeting hosted 58 experienced HAE ex…

The international EAACI/GA²LEN/EuroGuiDerm/APAAACI guideline for the definition, classification, diagnosis, and management of urticaria

2022

This update and revision of the international guideline for urticaria was developed following the methods recommended by Cochrane and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) working group. It is a joint initiative of the Dermatology Section of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GALEN) and its Urticaria and Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence (UCAREs and ACAREs), the European Dermatology Forum (EDF; EuroGuiDerm), and the Asia Pacific Association of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology with the participation of 64 delegates of 50 national and international soci…

Macular edema: Miscellaneous.

2010

International audience; Abstract. This article provides the reader with practical information to be applied to the various remaining causes of macular edema. Some macular edemas linked to ocular diseases like radiotherapy after ocular melanomas remained of poor functional prognosis due to the primary disease. On the contrary, macular edemas occurring after retinal detachment or after some systemic or local treatment use are often temporary. Macular edema associated with epiretinal membranes or vitreomacular traction is the main cause of poor functional recovery. However, the delay to observe a significant improvement of vision after surgery should be long, as usually observed in tractional …

Missense Mutations in the Proline-Rich Region of Coagulation Factor XII in Hereditary and Idiopathic Angioedema.

2006

Abstract Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is characterized by recurrent skin swelling, abdominal pain attacks, and potentially life-threatening upper airway obstruction. The two classic HAE types (I and II) are caused by mutations in the complement C1 inhibitor gene, resulting in a functional deficiency of C1 inhibitor. Recently, a novel type of hereditary angioedema has been described, these patients showing normal C1 inhibitor concentration and activity in plasma (HAE with normal C1 inhibitor, HAE type III). With few exceptions, all reported patients have been women, and exposition to estrogens appears to be an important precipitating factor. Screening of twenty unrelated female patients with …

Comparisons of Submental and Groin Vascularized Lymph Node Flaps Transfer for Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema

2018

Background:. The vascularized groin and submental lymph node (VGLN and VSLN) flaps are valuable options in the treatment of lymphedema. This study was to compare outcomes between VGLN and VSLN transfers for breast cancer–related lymphedema. Methods:. Between January 2008 and December 2016, VGLN and VSLN transfers for upper limb lymphedema were compared including flap characteristics, flap elevation time, complications, and limb circumference changes. Results:. All flaps survived. Similar vein (2.6 versus 3.2 mm; P = 0.3) and artery diameter (2.1 versus 2.8 mm; P = 0.3) and number of lymph nodes (3 versus 4; P = 0.4) were found between VGLN and VSLN groups, respectively. Circumferential redu…

Effects of preoperative group-based aquatic training on health related quality of life in persons with late stage knee osteoarthritis

2015

drainage is better than resistance training alone as far as improvement in lymphedema is concerned. Implications: Lymphedema has a substantial effect on the upper limb functioning, independence as well as quality of life post mastectomy. Manual lymphatic drainage can help these patients to achieve functional independence and thereby increase their life quality in a simple, cost effective and efficient way.
