The birth and youth of Compositio Mathematica: ‘Ce périodique foncièrement international’
2006
The journal Compositio Mathematica was founded by Luitzen E. J. Brouwer to counter his dismissal from the Mathematische Annalen in 1928. In spite of the economic crisis, Brouwer succeeded in finding a publisher (Noordhoff), an editorial board and subscribers. The founding took place at the time of the rise of the Third Reich, which caused problems of a political nature. The German editors followed Ludwig Bieberbach in 1934 when he left the board because Brouwer refused to dismiss the Jewish editors. After a period of flourishing, the publication was suspended at the beginning of the occupation of Holland in 1940. The post-war restart of the journal led to a painful conflict between Brouwer …

People are living longer, not, as was previously the case, due to reduced child mortality, but because we are postponing the ill-health of old age [...]
“Positive biology”: the centenarian lesson
2012
Abstract The extraordinary increase of the elderly in developed countries underscore the importance of studies on ageing and longevity and the need for the prompt spread of knowledge about ageing in order to satisfactorily decrease the medical, economic and social problems associated to advancing years, because of the increased number of individuals not autonomous and affected by invalidating pathologies. Centenarians are equipped to reach the extreme limits of human life span and, most importantly, to show relatively good health, being able to perform their routine daily life and to escape fatal age-related diseases. Thus, they are the best example of extreme longevity, representing select…

Erratum to "The histology of ovarian cancer: Worldwide distribution and implications for international survival comparisons (CONCORD-2)" [Gynecol. On…

Data on 681,759 women diagnosed during 1995–2009 with cancer of the ovary, fallopian tube, peritoneum and retroperitonum in 51 countries were included. We categorised ovarian tumours into six histological groups, and explored the worldwide distribution of histology. Sovereign Debt Litigation in Argentina: Implications of the Pari Passu Default
2015
On 31 July 2014, Argentina defaulted on its sovereign bonds for the second time in the 21st century. It was also its eighth default since independence1; at such frequency, this was perhaps not an especially noteworthy event. What made it so extraordinary was not that another domestic financial crisis triggered the payment default, but rather an injunction handed down by a federal district court in New York. However, despite public outrage, the wider impact of this decision is likely to be limited. That is even more so if reforms that have already started continue to be implemented. The case dates back to Christmas Eve 2001, when the interim Saa administration declared a payment suspension o…
