Ventilator-associated Pneumonia and MRSA ST398, Italy
2010
To the Editor: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type (ST)398 has become increasingly common in livestock, particularly pigs, in some countries in Europe, such as Spain and Germany (1). In Italy, prevalences as high as 14% and 21.6% in pig-breeding facilities and meat-processing sites, respectively, have been recently reported (1). Possible association of MRSA in animals with infection in humans has been investigated. One study showed a strong relationship between contact with pigs or calves and carriage by persons having direct contact with animals and families of persons who handle animals (2). Moreover, an MRSA prevalence >11.9% has been described by de Boer et …
The Role of Yeasts in Fermentation Processes
2020
In recent years, vessels have been discovered that contain the remains of wine with an age close to 7000 years. It is unclear whether, in ancient times, humans accidentally stumbled across fermented beverages like wine or beer, or was it a product intended as such. What is a fact is that since then, alcoholic beverages have been part of the diet and culture of many of the civilizations that have preceded us. The typical examples of beer and wine are an example of many other drinks resulting from the action of yeasts. In addition to these two beverages, various companies have developed other types of fermented foods and non-alcoholic beverages prepared in a traditional or commercial manner. …

Since the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928, the use of antibiotics has become the golden standard in the treatment of bacterial infections of all kinds [...]
Familial Trichostrongylus Infection Misdiagnosed as Acute Fascioliasis
2015
To the Editor: Human fascioliasis, infection with Fasciola spp. flukes, is highly pathogenic in both acute and chronic phases and can result in death (1). This disease has been recently emerging, in part linked to climate and global changes (2). Human Fasciola infection has been reported in 5 continents and is related to the disease’s wide spread in livestock. Guilan Province in northern Iran is a fascioliasis-endemic area where the largest human epidemics have occurred, together affecting ≈15,000 persons (3). In 2014, 3 sisters (ages 35, 33, and 38) and their 41-year-old brother (patients 1–4, respectively) sought medical care at the same time, all with a 3-week history of symptoms. The pa…
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 and HIV Co-infection
2010
To the Editor: We report a case of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 infection in a man with serologic evidence of HIV-1 infection. The clinical course was complicated by lung and brain involvement (respiratory failure and lethargy), severe leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, but complications resolved after treatment with oseltamivir (150 mg 2×/d). In November 2009, a 47-year-old man who had received a diagnosis of hepatitis C infection 8 months earlier sought treatment at Ospedale Santa Maria Nuova, Reggio Emilia, Italy. He had a 3-day history of fever, dry cough, and drowsiness. Eight days before being admitted, the man had resided in the hospital’s inpatient detoxification unit, in which at least 10 i…
Roles Of Stakeholders In Strategic Decision-Making Of Microfinance Organizations
2009
Microfinance organizations provide financial services to low income people. These organizations have been increasing dramatically worldwide. This increment calls attention for these organizations and their boards to make strategic decisions which enable them perform well and compete with each other. Based on literature, this paper identifies six types of microfinance stakeholders who sit on boards. These are clients, employees, government, donors, creditors and owners. The paper discusses different roles of these stakeholders when they sit on boards of Microfinance Organizations. These roles are further explained to show how they contribute to the process of making strategic decisions. Lite…

Oxidant antioxidants and adaptive responses to exercise.
2015
The extensive damage produced by unaccustomed (acute) exercise and the health benefits of regular physical activity are well-known phenomena as well as the role played in them by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The present issue reports some interesting studies showing that the Janus faced effects of exercise-induced ROS in skeletal muscle. Most studies dealing with ROS contribution to acute exercise-induced tissue damage determine the levels of markers of oxidative damage to specific substances but they do not take into account total redox status of an individual before and after exercise. In their research article D. Stagos et al. used markers measuring plasma static (sORP) and capacity (c…
A modified dinucleotide motif specifies tRNA recognition by TLR7
2014
RNA can function as a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) whose recognition by the innate immune system alerts the body to an impending microbial infection. The recognition of tRNA as either self or nonself RNA by TLR7 depends on its modification patterns. In particular, it is known that the presence of a ribose methylated guanosine at position 18, which is overrepresented in self-RNA, antagonizes an immune response. Here, we report that recognition extends to the next downstream nucleotide and the effectively recognized molecular detail is actually a methylated dinucleotide. The most efficient nucleobases combination of this motif includes two purines, while pyrimidines diminish t…
