This paper aims at sharing the experience we had in the design and implementation of a short pilot course of Italian in Second Life® (SL). The paper will provide a description of the course mentioning preliminary findings, discussed in relation to the theories adopted by the two researchers. The paper is the result of the course, La Lingua in gioco: dire, fare e giocare in SL, that had a strong focus on the development of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) and Oral Language Proficiency and was aimed at a group of third-level Irish students of Italian in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), who will spend the third year of their degree in Italy (Erasmus programme). Problem-Based Learning in Professional Studies from the Physiotherapy Students’ Perspective

2018

The aim of the study was to investigate how physiotherapy students using a problem-based learning approach develop into experts during higher education, and answers the question: How do physiotherapy students at bachelor’s level understand the problem-based learning approach while learning to become professionals? PBL is examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of longitudinal data written by 15 voluntary students from two different higher education institutions and collected during 3.5 years. The main results on the new way of learning strengthen earlier conceptions of the importance of reflection in the learning process. The PBL method activates a reflection process b…

Variation of student engagement between different algebra tasks

2018

In this study, we analyse how 7th grade students’ engagement during small group work differed in two consecutive algebra lessons: in the first lesson students solved equa-tions and in the second lesson they created equations for other small groups to solve. Data was collected by videorecording the work of two groups in both lessons. Through directed content analysis, categories indicating student engagement were formed based on previous research and refined during analysis. The analysis revealed a change from individual engagement to collaborative engagement between lessons and an increase in many passive students’ engagement. Task characteristics which may affect the type and amount of eng…

Miten opettaja rakentaa pedagogisen auktoriteetin? Otteita opettajan arjesta

2002
