Levels of 137Cs in game and soil in Opole Anomaly, Poland in 2012–2020

2021

Abstract Once deposited, radiocesium remains in the environment for a long time, and constantly enters the food chain. Over time, game species tend to accumulate 137Cs by two orders of magnitude more than farm animals. This occurs especially in places heavily contaminated, thus meat products made out of local game should be treated with caution. One of such areas, known as the Opole Anomaly, is located in South-Western Poland and represents one of most 137Cs contaminated regions across Europe after the Chernobyl accident. The aim of the study was to find out the 137Cs activity in soil and local game, the value of the soil-to-game aggregated transfer factor and to assess the effective dose o…

Breakthrough Pain (BTP) in Opioid-Tolerant Cancer Patients: A Pan-European Open-Label Multicentre Study with Fentanyl Buccal Tablet (FBT)

2012

ABSTRACT BTP, a transitory exacerbation of pain that occurs on a background of otherwise controlled persistent pain, is a common problem in cancer patients. FBT is indicated for the treatment of BTP in adults with cancer already receiving maintenance opioid therapy for chronic cancer pain and should be titrated to an effective dose that provides adequate analgesia and minimises undesirable events. In this study, patients entered a screening period and were randomized during an open-label titration period to a starting FBT dose of 100 µg (group A) or 200 µg (group B) to identify the FBT effective dose and then treated in an open-label period (for 8 BTP episodes). Patients' inclusion followed…

Coronary artery calcium score on low-dose computed tomography for lung cancer screening

2013

Aim: To evaluate the feasibility of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) on low-dose non-gated chest CT (ngCCT). Methods: Sixty consecutive individuals (30 males; 73 ± 7 years) scheduled for risk stratification by means of unenhanced ECG-triggered cardiac computed tomography (gCCT) underwent additional unenhanced ngCCT. All CT scans were performed on a 64-slice CT scanner (Somatom Sensation 64 Cardiac, Siemens, Germany). CACS was calculated using conventional methods/scores (Volume, Mass, Agatston) as previously described in literature. The CACS value obtained were compared. The Mayo Clinic classification was used to stratify cardiovascular risk based on Agatston CACS. Differences and corre…

In the rat maximal dentate activation model of partial complex epilepsy, the anticonvulsant activity of levetiracetam is modulated by nitric oxide-ac…

2009

The effects of nitric oxide-active drugs on the anticonvulsant action of the antiepileptic drug levetiracetam in an experimental model of partial complex seizures named maximal dentate gyrus activation were studied in rats. Levetiracetam was given alone or in combination with 7-nitroindazole, a preferential inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, or with L: -arginine, the precursor of nitric oxide synthesis. The maximal dentate activation parameters were the time of latency and the durations of maximal dentate activation and afterdischarge responses. The administration of levetiracetam showed an anticonvulsant effect that was increased when given in combination with 7-nitroindazole. Th…

Focal or whole-gland salvage prostate brachytherapy with iodine seeds with or without a rectal spacer for postradiotherapy local failure: How best to…

2016

International audience; PURPOSE: Salvage prostate permanent implant (sPPI) for postradiation local failure provides high rates of biochemical control. The cumulative dose delivered to the prostate and the rectum is still unknown. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We reviewed the postimplant CT-based dosimetry of 18 selected patients who underwent sPPI with I-125 seeds for isolated biopsy-proven local failure several years after external beam radiation therapy. Ten patients had whole-prostate sPPI, and 8 patients had multiparametric MRI-based focal sPPI. In 8 patients, hyaluronic acid (HA) gel was injected into the prostate rectum space. RESULTS: The median cumulative biological effective dose after EB…

Patient centring and scan length: how inaccurate practice impacts on radiation dose in CT colonography (CTC).

2019

Objective: The aim of this study was to acknowledge errors in patients positioning in CT colonography (CTC) and their effect in radiation exposure. Materials and methods: CTC studies of a total of 199 patients coming from two different referral hospitals were retrospectively reviewed. Two parameters have been considered for the analysis: patient position in relation to gantry isocentre and scan length related to the area of interest. CTDI vol and DLP were extracted for each patient. In order to evaluate the estimated effective total dose and the dose to various organs, we used the CT-EXPO ® software version 2.2. This software provides estimates of effective dose and doses to the other vario…

Hypericum Extract and Hyperforin: Memory-Enhancing Properties in Rodents

2001

Effects of a Hypericum extract in therapeutic use and hyperforin sodium salt were evaluated in rat and mouse avoidance tests. In a conditioned avoidance response (CAR) test on the rat, oral daily administration of hyperforin (1.25 mg/kg/day) or of the extract (50 mg/kg/day) before the training sessions considerably improved learning ability from the second day onwards until the day 7. In addition, the memory of the learned responses acquired during 7 consecutive days of administration and training was largely retained even after 9 days without further treatment or training. The observations made using different doses indicate that these learning-facilitating and/or memory-consolidating effe…

Obesity Triples the Radiation Dose of Stone Protocol Computerized Tomography

2013

Patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis are often evaluated and followed with computerized tomography. Obesity is a risk factor for nephrolithiasis. We evaluated the radiation dose of computerized tomography in obese and nonobese adults. We scanned a validated, anthropomorphic male phantom according to our institutional renal stone evaluation protocol. The obese model consisted of the phantom wrapped in 2 Custom Fat Layers (CIRS, Norfolk, Virginia), which have been verified to have the same radiographic tissue density as fat. High sensitivity metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor dosimeters were placed at 20 organ locations in the phantoms to measure organ specific radiation dose…

Digital Tomosynthesis: A New Technique for Imaging Nephrolithiasis. Specific Organ Doses and Effective Doses Compared With Renal Stone Protocol Nonco…

2014

Objective To determine organ-specific doses (ODs) and effective dose (ED) for digital tomosynthesis (DT) and compare it with our institutional renal stone protocol noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT). Methods A validated anthropomorphic male phantom was placed supine on a digital GE Definium 8000 radiological scanner. Thermoluminescent dosimeters were placed in 256 locations and used to measure OD. A routine DT study was performed consisting of 2 scout images and 1 tomographic sweep in a 14.2-degree arc over the phantom. Software is used to recreate a series of coronal images from the sweep. ODs were determined as the sum of the doses for the study. Equivalent doses were calculated by mu…

Inhibition of Mycotoxigenic Fungi in Different Vegetable Matrices by Extracts of Trichoderma Species

2021

Post-harvest fungal diseases of plant products are a serious concern leading to economic losses and health risks. Moreover, the use of synthetic chemical fungicides to prevent these diseases is limited due to toxic residues. This study aimed at determining the effective dose of extracts of Trichoderma&nbsp
