Collapse of Linear Polyelectrolyte Chains in a Poor Solvent: When Does a Collapsing Polyelectrolyte Collect its Counterions?

2008

To better understand the collapse of polyions in poor solvent conditions the effective charge and the solvent quality of the hypothetically uncharged polymer backbone need to be known. In the present work this is achieved by utilizing poly-2-vinylpyridine quaternized to 4.3% with ethylbromide. Conductivity and light scattering measurements were utilized to study the polyion collapse in isorefractive solvent/nonsolvent mixtures consisting of 1-propanol and 2-pentanone, respectively, at nearly constant dielectric constant. The solvent quality of the uncharged polyion could be quantified which, for the first time, allowed the experimental investigation of the effect of the electrostatic intera…

Tracer diffusion properties of core-shell latex films studied by photoinduced grating relaxation

2007

This article reports the application of the Photo-Induced Grating Relaxation technique (also known as Forced Rayleigh Scattering) to investigate the dynamics of films prepared from structured core–shell latex particles via the transport property of the photochromic tracer molecule Aberchrome 540®. The core–shell particles were prepared with a fluoropolymer core (immiscible and impenetrable to the tracer) and a poly(butyl methacrylate) shell. The incompletely dried films (with residual water) manifest their spatial heterogeneity via non-Fickian behavior (spatial scale- dependent apparent diffusion coefficient). The diffusion data was interpreted using the two-state diffusion model, previousl…

Scale dependent diffusion in latex films studied by photoinduced grating relaxation technique

2003

The transition from an aqueous dispersion of polyacrylate latices into a homogeneous polymer film on drying has been studied by monitoring the diffusion of hydrophobic and hydrophilic photochromic molecular probes with the help of a holographic grating relaxation (forced Rayleigh scattering) technique. Experiments with the hydrophobic probe in wet films result in an unusual spatial scale-dependence of the apparent diffusion coefficient that degenerates into a normal scale-independent diffusion coefficient as the film dries. Employment of a two-state diffusion model allows extracting the diffusion coefficients and mean displacements of the tracer in the polymer cores of the latex particles a…

Binding of water-soluble, globular proteins to anionic model membranes

2009

Abstract The role of electrostatics is studied in the adsorption of proteins to negatively charged (phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidylglycerol, PC/PG) and neutral (PC) small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs). For model proteins the interaction is monitored vs . pH at low ionic strength. The adsorption behaviour of lysozyme, myoglobin and albumin (isoelectronic point, p I 5–11) is investigated in SUVs, along with changes of the fluorescence emission spectra of the charged proteins, via their adsorption on SUVs. Significant adsorption of the proteins to negatively charged SUVs is found only at pH values, where the number of positive charge moieties exceeds the number of negative charge moieties on th…

Multivalent ion-exchange model of biopolymer chromatography for mass overload conditions

1991

Abstract The simple model of multivalent ion-exchange biopolymer chromatography is analyzed on the basis of classical quasi-chemical temperature. The rigorous isotherm equation deduced from the stoichiometric displacement model (SDM) was used to stimulate the migration of a solute through the chromatographic column in the isocratic and gradient elution modes. The peak profiles generated for various sample sizes were compared with those obtained on the basis of a Langmuir isotherm. Peak tailing increases with the value of the exponent Z, defined as the ratio of the protein valency to the displacing counter-ion valency. For large Z the asymmetries due to the non-linearity of the isotherm are …

Temperature effects on counterion binding to spherical polyelectrolytes: the charge-discharge transition of lignosulfonate

1995

Abstract The effect of temperature on the effective charge numbers and diffusion coefficients of polyelectrolytes has not nobee dealth with in many studies. The present study concerns the temperature behavior of lignosulfonate. Lignosulfonate is a polydisperse polyelectrolyte whose molecules are compact spheres in aqueous solutions. One of its most remarkable properties is that is loses its charge in 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solution at about 40°C. In order to explain this charge-discharge transition, a theory for ion binding to spherical polyelectrolytes based on the relative population of two hydration states of the charged groups is presented. The water molecules adjacent to the charged groups…

Effective conjugation in conjugated polymers with strongly twisted backbones: A case study on fluorinated MEHPPV

2016

Conjugated polymers with strongly twisted backbones, such as MEHPPV with fluorinated vinylene units (F-MEHPPV), demand a redefinition of the all-important ‘effective conjugation length’ ECL, which we extract here by a facile graphical method. In MEHPPV (being essentially planar), the ECL coincides with the ‘maximum conducive chain length’ MCC and extends over about n ≈ 9 repetition units (RU). In F-MEHPPV, the MCC is similarly long with n ≈ 8, but the ECL localizes on just one RU. The strong twist in F-MEHPPV persists in the excited state, broadening the emission spectrum and quenching the fluorescence with reduced radiative and enhanced non-radiative rates.

Electrophysiological evidence for the effectiveness of images versus text in warnings

2023

AbstractWarning sign plays an important role in risk avoidance. Many studies have found that images are better warnings than text, while others have revealed flaws of image-only warning signs. To better understand the factors underlying the effectiveness of different types of warning signs (image only, text only, or image and text), this study adopted event-related potential technology to explore the differences at the neurocognitive level using the oddball paradigm and the Go/No-go paradigm. Together, the behavioral and electroencephalogram results showed that text-only warnings had the lowest effectiveness, but there was little difference between the image-only and image-and-text warnings…

Hunting for new physics signals in the LHC era

2021
