Feasibility of Coulomb blockade thermometry in metrology

2000

Abstract Coulomb blockade thermometer (CBT) is a simple, magnetic-field-independent primary thermometer for everyday use at cryogenic temperatures. Its properties are well understood by now. The absolute accuracy at present is about ±0.5%. Recently, we have started studying the possibility of using CBT in metrological applications. We have especially in mind the future extension of the international temperature scale below 0.65 K, which is the lower end of ITS-90. Experiments with arrays containing more than 100 tunnel junctions in series are in progress in order to decrease the effects of electromagnetic environment and of co-tunnelling even below the present level.

Enhancement of electron spin lifetime in GaAs crystals: the benefits of dichotomous noise

2013

The electron spin relaxation process in n-type GaAs crystals driven by a fluctuating electric field is investigated. Two different sources of fluctuations are considered: (i) a symmetric dichotomous noise and (ii) a Gaussian correlated noise. Monte Carlo numerical simulations show, in both cases, an enhancement of the spin relaxation time by increasing the amplitude of the external noise. Moreover, we find that the electron spin lifetime versus the noise correlation time: (i) increases up to a plateau in the case of dichotomous random fluctuations, and (ii) shows a nonmonotonic behaviour with a maximum in the case of bulks subjected to a Gaussian correlated noise.

Entanglement-induced electron coherence in a mesoscopic ring with two magnetic impurities

2006

We investigate the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference pattern in the electron transmission through a mesoscopic ring in which two identical non-interacting magnetic impurities are embedded. Adopting a quantum waveguide theory, we derive the exact transmission probability amplitudes and study the influence of maximally entangled states of the impurity spins on the electron transmittivity interference pattern. For suitable electron wave vectors, we show that the amplitude of AB oscillations in the absence of impurities is in fact not reduced within a wide range of the electron-impurity coupling constant when the maximally entangled singlet state is prepared. Such state is thus able to inhibit th…

Solvent Effects on Electronically Excited States Using the Conductor-Like Screening Model and the Second-Order Correlated Method ADC(2).

2015

The conductor-like screening model (COSMO) is used to treat solvent effects on excited states within a correlated method based on the algebraic-diagrammatic construction through second-order ADC(2). The origin of solvent effects is revisited, and it is pointed out that two types of contributions have to be considered. One effect is due to the change of the solute's charge distribution after excitation, which triggers a reorganization of the solvent. Initially, only the electronic degrees of freedom adapt to the new charge distribution (nonequilibrium case); for sufficiently long-lived states, the reorientation of the solvent molecules contributes, as well (equilibrium case). The second effe…

Coherence loss in phase-referenced VLBI observations

2010

Context. Phase-referencing is a standard calibration technique in radio interferometry, particularly suited for the detection of weak sources close to the sensitivity limits of the interferometers. However, effects from a changing atmosphere and inaccuracies in the correlator model may affect the phase-referenced images, and lead to wrong estimates of source flux densities and positions. A systematic observational study of signal decoherence in phase-referencing and its effects in the image plane has not been performed yet. Aims. We systematically studied how the signal coherence in Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry (VLBI) observations is affected by a phase-reference calibration at differe…

Finite difference time domain simulation of soil ionization in grounding systems under lightning surge conditions

2004

This paper proposes a Maxwell’s equations finite difference time domain (FDTD) approach for electromagnetic transients in ground electrodes in order to take into account the non linear effects due to soil ionization. A time variable soil resistivity method is used in order to simulate the soil breakdown, without the formulation of an initial hypothesis about the geometrical shape of the ionized zone around the electrodes. The model has been validated by comparing the computed results with available data found in technical literature referred to concentrated earths. Some application examples referred to complex grounding systems are reported to show the computational capability of the propos…

Non-Gaussian noise effects in the dynamics of a short overdamped Josephson junction

2010

The role of thermal and non-Gaussian noise on the dynamics of driven short overdamped Josephson junctions is studied. The mean escape time of the junction is investigated considering Gaussian, Cauchy-Lorentz and Levy-Smirnov probability distributions of the noise signals. In these conditions we find resonant activation and the first evidence of noise enhanced stability in a metastable system in the presence of Levy noise. For Cauchy-Lorentz noise source, trapping phenomena and power law dependence on the noise intensity are observed.

Coherent effects in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers

2004

We investigate under which conditions coherent effects manifest in the multimode dynamics of inhomogeneously broadened ring lasers. In particular, we demonstrate that for long enough cavities standard rate equations for class-B lasers fail in describing the multimode dynamics.

A Coherent Master Equation for active mode locking in lasers

2015

We present the derivation of a new master equation for active mode locking in lasers that fully takes into account the coherent effects of the light matter interaction through a peculiar adiabatic elimination technique. The coherent effects included in our model could be relevant to describe properly mode-locked semiconductor lasers where the standard Haus’ Master Equation predictions show some discrepancy with respect to the experimental results and can be included in the modelling of other mode locking techniques too.

Electron dynamical response in InP semiconductors driven by fluctuating electric fields

2015

Abstract The complexity of electron dynamics in low-doped n-type InP crystals operating under fluctuating electric fields is deeply explored and discussed. In this study, we employ a multi-particle Monte Carlo approach to simulate the non-linear transport of electrons inside the semiconductor bulk. All possible scattering events of hot electrons in the medium, the main details of the band structure, as well as the heating effects, are taken into account. The results presented in this study derive from numerical simulations of the electron dynamical response to the application of a sub-Thz electric field, fluctuating for the superimposition of an external source of Gaussian correlated noise.…
