Non-linear Correlation Coefficients for pushover analysis

Aiming to put forward an improvement on Multimodal Pushover Analysis, a modified version of the modal correlation rule that takes into account the non-linear behavior of structures is proposed. The modification is primarily based on using the correlation coefficients consistent with the mechanical and dynamical properties of the hysteretic oscillators utilized in the MPA method, i.e. determined taking into account the second order statistics pertinent to the non-linear oscillators. Thermochromic materials such as vanadium dioxide have been postulated for use in “SMART” windows for a number of years. Such windows work by exploiting a structural phase change from an infra-red transmissive state to a infra-red reflective state. Significant challenges still remain before such materials will be able to find wide spread use. In this mini review we discuss the nature of this thermochromic transition with reference to the latest research work in the field. Fostering the energy efficiency through the energy savings: The case of the University of Palermo

This paper reports the strategy implemented by the Palermo University (Italy) aimed at fostering the energy performance of its campus, particularly towards financing energy saving measures. The basic idea is that the money saved through the energy efficiency actions, constitute the main flywheel to fund further savings and energy efficiency interventions. Results of this paper might bring a useful contribution to the energy planning of cities, since campuses may be regarded as emblematic case study of what can be done in cities because they reproduce, at a little scale, the functioning of wider urban contexts.

Abstract Artificial lighting systems have to ensure appropriate illuminance with high energy efficiency according to best design practice and technical standards. These aims can be tackled, by incorporating a Daylight linked control system. However, the system behaviour is strongly influenced by several factors and, in particular, by the sensors' position. Indeed, very often the illuminance on work-plane is not fully correlated with illuminance measured by the photo-sensor used to control the luminaires. The energy demand of the hotel sector of an Italian region is here utilized for hierarchizing, by means of an empirical method, efficient measures devoted to energy saving and reduction of CO2 emissions. Due to the large number of consumers present in the selected territorial area and the lack in detailed data, the energy demand assessment is here carried out by the analysis of a sample of representative consumers.
