Numerical Calibration of a Simplified Model for FRP Confinement of Columns

This paper presents the calibration of a simplified analytical model for concrete columns confined by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets. The model allows evaluating the increase of strength, ductility and dissipated energy without defining the lateral confinement pressure and it can be easily extended for the assessment of FRP confinement in design applications. Social Network Analysis (SNA) is used to study the exchange of resources among individuals, groups, or organizations. The role of individuals or connections in a network is described by a set of centrality metrics which represent one of the most important results of SNA. Degree, closeness, betweenness and clustering coefficient are the most used centrality measures. Their use is, however, severely hampered by their computation cost. This issue can be overcome by an algorithm called Game of Thieves (GoT). Soft Computing Techniques for Portfolio Selection: Combining SRI with Mean-Variance Goals

A fuzzy portfolio selection model is presented incorporating a socially responsible goal without discarding a priori financially good portfolios or weakening a priori the financial goals. Hence, the optimal portfolios it provides could be either efficient from the strictly financial point of view or non-efficient if leaving the efficient frontier substantially improves the degree of social responsibility. The model can be used to direct heuristic procedures in order to select a reduced number of various alternatives from which the investor can directly make a final decision.
Testing assumptions and procedures to empirically predict bare plot soil loss in a Mediterranean environment

Empirical prediction of soil erosion has both scientific and practical importance. This investigation tested USLE and USLE-based procedures to predict bare plot soil loss at the Sparacia area, in Sicily. Event soil loss per unit area, Ae, did not vary appreciably with plot length, λ, because the decrease in runoff with λ was offset by an increase in sediment concentration. Slope steepness, s, had a positive effective on Ae, and this result was associated with a runoff coefficient that did not vary appreciably with s and a sediment concentration generally increasing with s. Testing the “physical model concept” by soil loss data measured in Sicily

The best possible model to predict the erosion from an area of land has been suggested to be a physical model of the area that has similar soil type, land use, size, shape, slope and erosive inputs. Therefore, a replicated plot has to be considered the best possible, unbiased, real world model. In this paper the physical model concept was tested by using soil loss data collected on plots of different length at the experimental station of Sparacia, in Sicily (South Italy). Neural network prediction of AE data

Neural network (NN) models were constructed to study prediction of the AE index. Both solar wind (vBz) and previous observed AE inputs were used to predict AE data for different numbers of time steps ahead. It seems that prediction of the original unsmoothed AE data is possible only for 10 time steps (25 min) ahead. The predicted time series of the AE data for 50 time steps (125 min) ahead was found to be dynamically different from the original time series. It is possible that the NN model cannot reproduce the turbulent part of the power spectrum of the AE data. Solution behavior of ethylcellulose in organic solvents

Ethylcellulose has been investigated by osmotic pressure, sedimentation-diffusion, and light scattering measurements in dilute solutions of acetone, ethylacetate, 2-butanol, n-butylchloride, and benzene. Combining the results of different measuring techniques allowed the recognition and elimination of the influence of microgels present in the solution. The observed second virial coefficients are high as compared with those of the vinyl polymers and do not show a pronounced dependence on the type of solvent.
