Bootstrap validation of links of a minimum spanning tree
2018
We describe two different bootstrap methods applied to the detection of a minimum spanning tree obtained from a set of multivariate variables. We show that two different bootstrap procedures provide partly distinct information that can be highly informative about the investigated complex system. Our case study, based on the investigation of daily returns of a portfolio of stocks traded in the US equity markets, shows the degree of robustness and completeness of the information extracted with popular information filtering methods such as the minimum spanning tree and the planar maximally filtered graph. The first method performs a "row bootstrap" whereas the second method performs a "pair bo…
Low-Power Audio Keyword Spotting using Tsetlin Machines
2021
The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven Keyword Spotting (KWS) technologies has revolutionized human to machine interaction. Yet, the challenge of end-to-end energy efficiency, memory footprint and system complexity of current Neural Network (NN) powered AI-KWS pipelines has remained ever present. This paper evaluates KWS utilizing a learning automata powered machine learning algorithm called the Tsetlin Machine (TM). Through significant reduction in parameter requirements and choosing logic over arithmetic based processing, the TM offers new opportunities for low-power KWS while maintaining high learning efficacy. In this paper we explore a TM based keyword spotting (KWS) pipe…
Exponential sums related to Maass forms
2019
We estimate short exponential sums weighted by the Fourier coefficients of a Maass form. This requires working out a certain transformation formula for non-linear exponential sums, which is of independent interest. We also discuss how the results depend on the growth of the Fourier coefficients in question. As a byproduct of these considerations, we can slightly extend the range of validity of a short exponential sum estimate for holomorphic cusp forms. The short estimates allow us to reduce smoothing errors. In particular, we prove an analogue of an approximate functional equation previously proven for holomorphic cusp form coefficients. As an application of these, we remove the logarithm …
Classification of Heart Sounds Using Convolutional Neural Network
2020
Heart sounds play an important role in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), it is problematic and time-consuming for experts to discriminate different kinds of heart sounds. Thus, objective classification of heart sounds is essential. In this study, we combined a conventional feature engineering method with deep learning algorithms to automatically classify normal and abnormal heart sounds. First, 497 features were extracted from eight domains. Then, we fed these features into the designed convolutional neural network (CNN), in which the fully connected layers that are usually used before the classification layer were replaced with a global averag…
Magnetically enhancing the Seebeck coefficient in ferrofluids.
2019
The influence of the magnetic field on the Seebeck coefficient (Se) was investigated in dilute magnetic nanofluids (ferrofluids) composed of maghemite magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO). A 25% increase in the Se value was found when the external magnetic field was applied perpendicularly to the temperature gradient, reminiscent of an increase in the Soret coefficient (ST, concentration gradient) observed in the same fluids. In-depth analysis of experimental data, however, revealed that different mechanisms are responsible for the observed magneto-thermoelectric and -thermodiffusive phenomena. Possible physical and physico-chemical origins leading to the enhancemen…
More restrictive Gray codes for some classes of pattern avoiding permutations
2009
In a recent article [W.M.B. Dukes, M.F. Flanagan, T. Mansour, V. Vajnovszki, Combinatorial Gray codes for classes of pattern avoiding permutations, Theoret. Comput. Sci. 396 (2008) 35-49], Dukes, Flanagan, Mansour and Vajnovszki present Gray codes for several families of pattern avoiding permutations. In their Gray codes two consecutive objects differ in at most four or five positions, which is not optimal. In this paper, we present a unified construction in order to refine their results (or to find other Gray codes). In particular, we obtain more restrictive Gray codes for the two Wilf classes of Catalan permutations of length n; two consecutive objects differ in at most two or three posit…
Web-based real-time data acquisition system as tool for energy efficiency monitoring
2013
A web-based data acquisition system is proposed as a research tool of the energy efficiency monitoring project of the test stands. Basic requirements for the architecture of the data acquisition system are discussed. The architecture of the data acquisition system is proposed to provide the real-time interface with sensors, to acquire and to log data from all sensors with fixed rate, and to deliver logged data through FTP to the end-user.
Effects of Behavioural Finance on Emerging Capital Markets
2014
Abstract A recent common view of finance experts is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand how the economy as a whole works. Although the efficient market theory might be considered an ideal model enabling the interpretation of market behavior, it has begun to lose ground, and the rationality hypothesis failed to explain the excessive volatility of the returns and trading volume recorded on both developed capital markets and emerging ones. Adding the behavioral finance perspective to the equation can help us to understand better how market agents will react. In this article, we investigate the factors that may explain the trading volume evolution on two emerging capital ma…
How Does the Romanian State Support the Increase of Energy Efficiency of Buildings by Using Public Funds?
2020
Abstract The issue of improving the energy efficiency of buildings in Romania is one of interest, both for the state authorities and for the population. The general purpose is to encourage the production of thermal energy and domestic hot water through the use of renewable energy sources. This is part of the EU's long-term objective of decarbonising the existing and inefficient European real estate park. In order to start renovating the existing buildings on the national territory, considerable financial resources are needed which the owners should have. The Romanian state, through the Agency for Environmental Protection, comes to the support the interested persons by granting financial sup…
The Financial Costs in Energy Efficient District. Alternative Scenarios from the Demo Sites of the CITyFiED Program
2021
The European Union’s environmental policies actively promote the transition to a low-carbon society and to sustainable energy systems that improve people’s quality of life and do not negatively impact the natural environment. To achieve these goals, the European Union funded several programs to pilot energy efficiency measures for buildings and districts and, lately, launched the European Green Deal. The results of these experimentations have shown that often the economic feasibility of retrofitting interventions is not achieved without public grants. This contribution aims to analyze the influence of financial parameters on the profitability of projects of energy efficient districts. The s…
