Interaction of Quinine with Model Lipid Membranes of Different Compositions

2002

The binding of a drug such as Quinine with neutral and negatively charged small unilamellar lipid vesicles at pH 7 and 37 degrees C was investigated. Changes in the fluorescence properties of the drug after association with the liposomes were used to obtain binding isotherms over a range of phospholipid compositions at different ionic strengths. Under such conditions, the association was strongly enhanced by the negative net charge of the bilayer but diminished by the increasing presence of electrolytes in the aqueous media. Binding data were analyzed in terms of a surface partition equilibrium without and after correcting for electrostatic effects by means of the Gouy-Chapman theory. The i…

Stationary–mobile phase distribution coefficient for polystyrene standards

2002

The measured shifts of the retention volume V R of polystyrene (PS) towards lower values in benzene–methanol (Bz–MeOH), and towards higher values in butanone–heptane (But–Hep) are in agreement with our theoretical model, in which both MeOH and But are adsorbed on Lichrospher. This paved way for us to model the chromatographic stationary (s)-phase as MeOH and the mobile (m)-phase as Bz–MeOH, and to calculate the distribution coefficients for PS. For But–Hep, the s-phase has been modeled as But, and the m-phase as But–Hep. A linear relation for the experimental equilibrium distribution P sm of PS is shown between the s- and m- phases in Bz–MeOH and But–Hep vs. the logarithm of the molecular m…

Predicting the bioaccumulation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in benthic animals in sediments

2016

There were two main objectives in this study. The first was to compare the accuracy of different prediction methods for the chemical concentrations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the organism, based on the measured chemical concentrations existing in sediment dry matter or pore water. The predicted tissue concentrations were compared to the measured ones after 28-day laboratory test using oligochaeta worms (Lumbriculus variegatus). The second objective was to compare the bioaccumulation of PAHs and PCBs in the laboratory test with the in situ bioaccumulation of these compounds. Using the traditional organic carbon-water partitioning model, tissue…

Evaluation of biomass activity in membrane bioreactors by means of respirometric techniques

2016

The paper reports the main results of a respirometric experimental survey carried out on several membrane bioreactor pilot plants, characterized by different pilot plant layouts as well as operational conditions. The main aim was to assess the influence of specific conditions on biokinetic/stoichiometric parameters. In particular, the respirometric tests were specifically aimed at investigating the activity of both heterotrophic and autotrophic bacterial species. The achieved results showed that the plant configuration and the features of the feeding wastewater and operational conditions determine significant variation of the kinetic coefficients. The respirometric analysis was confirmed to…

Triplet 12B-12C-12N : Search for States with Halo

2020

Previously in [1] neutron halo was confirmed for the 2¯, 1.67 MeV and 1¯, 2.62 MeV states in 12B on base of Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANC) method analysis of the obtained experimental data. An unexpected result was received for the unbound 3¯, 3.39 MeV state. Its halo radius was found to be increased and equal to ~5.9 fm. This result can be considered as an evidence of the halo-like structure in this 12B state. It should be noted that last neutron in this state has a non-zero orbital momentum (l = 2). So question arises about possible existence of states with halo in other members of the isobaric triplet 12B–12C–12N. We can expect the formation of a proton halo in the 2¯, 1.19 …

Energy-Delay Efficiency of MCML Gates

2012

In this paper, the energy-delay tradeoff that can be realized between energy and delay for MCML gates is explored using the energy-efficient curve. Two metric, namely, the energy-delay gain and the delay-energy gain are employed to quantify it. Moreover, a methodology is introduced for the minimization of the energy-delay product. Experiments were performed in 130nm and 45nm technologies.

Non linear and linearized combination coefficients for modal pushover analysis

2017

Current design practice and seismic codes tend to assess seismic demand of buildings by Non linear Static Analysis (NSA), based on the evaluation of the pushover curve. Earlier non-linear static analysis procedure estimate the response peak value by evaluating the push-over curve adopting a distribution of invariant forces proportional to the fundamental vibration mode. In order to include the effect of higher modes several multimodal push-over analysis procedures were proposed in literature. In In the most famous of these, namely Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA), nodal response peak values are obtained by combination of "modal" responses by the traditional SRSS or CQC methods: the use of the …

Energy Harvesting Enabled Energy Efficient Cognitive Machine-to-Machine Communications

2020

Energy harvesting based cognitive machine-to-machine (EH-CM2M) communication has been introduced to overcome the problem of spectrum scarcity and limited battery capacity by enabling M2M transmitters (M2M-TXs) to harvest energy from ambient radio frequency signals, as well as to reuse the resource blocks (RBs) allocated to CUs in an opportunistic manner. However, the complex interference scenarios and the stringent QoS requirements pose new challenges on resource allocation optimization. In this chapter, we consider how to maximize the energy efficiency of M2M-TXs via the joint optimization of channel selection, peer discovery, power control, and time allocation.

Electric-Motion in Romania - Overview - Study on Machining Parameters of EV Charging Station Mechanical Components

2016

This paper presents some relevant aspects of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Romania. It evidences the charging station and fast charging stations designed and installed by the first Romanian company dedicated 100% to e-mobility, E-Motion Electric. Also, a study on machining (milling) parameters of some mechanical components of electric vehicle (EV) charging station is done and, finally, the regression model for these parameters is determined. This model would be further used for machining process optimization.

Systems-dynamic analysis of employment and inequality impacts of low-carbon investments

2016

Abstract This paper provides a macroeconomic framework to evaluate the social and economic consequences generated by a shift of investment to low-carbon options. We introduce into a standard growth framework a modified Lotka–Volterra model for wage and employment determination to address both the long-run dynamics of the economic system in terms of carbon emission and GDP growth and the short-term macroeconomic fluctuations in terms of unemployment and inequality. We use this framework to compare the results of different combinations of three strategies for carbon emissions reductions: improvement in energy efficiency, expansion of the renewable energy sector, and the direct reduction in ca…
