We need more replication research – A case for test-retest reliability

2017

Following debates in psychology on the importance of replication research, we have also started to see pleas for a more prominent role for replication research in medical education. To enable replication research, it is of paramount importance to carefully study the reliability of the instruments we use. Cronbach’s alpha has been the most widely used estimator of reliability in the field of medical education, notably as some kind of quality label of test or questionnaire scores based on multiple items or of the reliability of assessment across exam stations. However, as this narrative review outlines, Cronbach’s alpha or alternative reliability statistics may complement but not replace psyc…

Comparing cetacean abundance estimates derived from spatial models and design-based line transect methods

2007

Spatial modelling is increasingly being used as an alternative to conventional design- based line transect sampling to estimate cetacean abundance. This new method combines line transect sampling with spatial analysis to predict animal abundance based on the relationship of ani- mals observed to environmental factors. It presents several advantages including: (1) the ability to use data collected from 'platforms of opportunity', (2) the ability to estimate abundance for any defined subarea within the study area, and (3) the possibility for increased precision if covariates explain sufficient variability in the data. One study has been conducted to compare spatial modelling with conventional…

Experimental Study on the Performance of Timber Frame Wall Panels in Mediterranean Construction

2018

Only recently, the use of wooden buildings is spreading in the central and southern parts of the Italy due to national and EU policies on eco-sustainability and energy saving. Knowledge of the durability of the building envelope elements, generally made with dry assembled stratified systems, is still insufficient. The paper presents the first results of a durability evaluation of multilayer timber panel applied to Platform Frame System buildings, focusing on the variation of energy performance over time. The case study describes the construction of two single-family houses in the municipality of San Cataldo (Sicily, Italy). The used timber multilayer panel presents a stratigraphy suitable f…

Effects of different amendments (organic matter and hydrogel) on the actual evapotranspiration and crop coefficient of turf grass under field conditi…

2020

The irrigation schedule in arid areas has to be efficient in order to reduce losses due to evaporation and deep infiltration. Irrigation optimization poses the need to establish with precision the value of actual evapotranspiration (ETa), and the crop coefficient (Kc). The water soil availability can be increased using hydrogel and organic matter amendments, and their effects could vary ETa and Kc. The aim of this study was to determine the ETa, and Kc of an experimental site with lysimeters on the Spanish Mediterranean coast cropped with a turf grass variety, Agrostis stolonifera ‐L‐93, under field conditions, and amended with hydrogel and organic matter. Reference evapotranspiration (ET0)…

Prediction of structural and thermodynamic properties of zinc-blende AlN: molecular dynamics simulation

2004

Abstract Structural and elastic properties of AlN are investigated by using a molecular dynamics simulation based on the Tersoff empirical interatomic potential. Both of zinc-blende and rock-salt structures are discussed. The calculated bulk properties and elastic constants agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The Thermodynamic properties in zinc-blende structure are also predicted including the Debye temperature, melting temperature, heat capacity, linear thermal coefficient. This study is helpful to understand the bahviour of physical properties of AlN when the temperature varies.

Optimization of ventilation system in the open office space

2018

The paper presents the results of study into the air parameters in open space offices. As office workers spend about 1/3 of the day in such spaces, it is important to provide them with the right climate comfort, and that is determined, most importantly, by: the temperature and humidity of the air, quality of the air, and the concentration of CO2. Two objects of study were selected - both of them open space facilities, each with a different intensity of use. In the course of study, measurements were taken on the basis of which the distributions of temperature, humidity, and concentrations of CO2 in the entire volume of the space were determined. Also the empirical coefficients of CO2 emissio…

Regional-scale modeling of reference evapotranspiration: Intercomparison of two simplified temperature- and radiation-based approaches

2015

Two regionalized models for the distributed estimation of daily reference evapotranspiration, the temperature-based Hargreaves (HE) and the radiation-based Makkink (MK) equations, are applied in Southern Italy during the years 2007 and 2008. Spatially distributed meteorological inputs, such as air temperature and incoming solar radiation, were derived from geostatistical interpolation of ground data and from the Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA-SAF) surface radiation product, respectively. Comparison of the latter with 83,394 daily measurements provided by 128 weather stations shows a not negligible seasonal error in daily solar radiation that is corrected by means …

Comparison between the energy performance of a ground coupled water to water heat pump system and an air to water heat pump system for heating and co…

2008

Abstract The investigation presented in this article was aimed at demonstrating the technical and economical feasibility of using ground source heat pump systems in mixed climate applications, where cooling requirements are dominant. We show an experimental comparison between a ground coupled heat pump system and a conventional air to water heat pump system, focussing at the heating and cooling energy performance. A direct comparison could be made as both systems are linked, in parallel, to the same building with exactly the same loads and climatic conditions. For a whole climatic season the results obtained show that the geothermal system saves, in terms of primary energy consumption, a 43…

Optimum Solution for Sliding Formwork Equipment

2015

In the present context of the construction domain where everything needs to respond to the market requirements and time efficiency is an ongoing issue, the paper analyses the optimum solution for a sliding formwork. By using all the previous data obtained through PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) approach, we determined the particular solution. For this creative methods were used.As a future step, by having such solution we can design an intelligent equipment and make a step ahead in the formwork industry.

Mode superposition methods in dynamic analysis of classically and non-classically damped linear systems

1986

Mode-superposition analysis is an efficient tool for the evaluation of the response of linear systems subjected to dynamic agencies. Two well-known mode-superposition methods are available in the literature, the mode-displacement method and the mode-acceleration method. Within this frame a method is proposed called a dynamic correction method which evaluates the structural response as the sum of a pseudostatic response, which is the particular solution of the differential equations, and a dynamic correction evaluated using a reduced number of natural modes. The greater accuracy of the proposed method with respect to the other methods is evidenced through extensive numerical tests, for class…
