This paper uses the tripartite place attachment framework to examine six rural parishes across Estonia and Latvia. Existing analyses/frameworks on participatory processes often neglect the complexity of relationships that rural residents have to their local environments. From a qualitative analysis of face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with case study area inhabitants (23 interviews in Estonia and 27 in Latvia), we depict varying degrees of attachment of individuals to each other and to the place in which they live and their readiness to participate in terms of willingness and ability to participate in a landscape-scale management process. After months of inaction and neglect from the international community, the Ebola epidemic in west Africa has now spiralled utterly out of control. Today, the virus is a threat not only to the countries where the outbreak has overwhelmed the capacity of national health systems, but also to the entire world. We urge our governments to mobilise all possible resources to assist west Africa in controlling this horrific epidemic. We document that existing gender equality indices do not account for gender-specific mandatory peace-time conscription (compulsory military service). This suggests that gender-specific conscription is not considered to be an important gender issue. If an indicator measuring the gender equality of mandatory conscription was to be included in gender equality indices with appropriate weight, then the relative rankings of countries in terms of measured gender equality could be affected. Abstract Silica xerogels with different structures and morphology, synthesized using a sol–gel procedure, were used as a carrier of vanadium catalysts (VOCl 3 /AlEt 2 Cl) for ethylene polymerization. Two techniques of catalyst synthesis were applied: slurry impregnation and gas-phase adsorption and the relevant polymerization methods were then employed. The effect of the carrier structure and morphology on the vanadium loading in the catalysts, the catalyst’s activity and kinetic stability were investigated.

Abstract The effect of the type of the comonomer (1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene and 1-dodecene) on the copolymerization of ethylene with α-olefin over vanadium (VOCl3 and VCl4) and titanium (TiCl4) catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2 and activated by Et2AlCl was studied. The results show that the introduction of a longer α-olefin in the ethylene polymerization feed depresses the catalytic activity of all investigated catalysts. The catalyst activity does not depend on the type of the comonomer applied but changes with the comonomer concentration in the feed. Abstract The effect of the calcination temperature of alumina, which was then used as a support for a titanium halide catalyst [TiCl4/Et2AlCl], on the catalyst activity in ethylene polymerization was investigated. α-Al2O3 was found to make a more advantageous catalyst support as compared to γ-Al2O3 despite the fact that the former offered a clearly lower specific surface area and its content of surface OH groups was inferior.
