Within the constant research of symmetries between the policies of Augustus and Mussolini, although many were the merits of Augustus (the conquest of Ethiopia marked the culmination of the myth of Romanity and the highest level of consensus towards the regime), the military expedition against the ancient Ethiopia (Res Gestae 26), carried out on behalf of Augustus by the prefect of Egypt Publius Petronius : the background of this campaign was a series of events that took place in the decade 30 to 20 B.C. and that can be reconstructed through sources such as Strabo, Pliny the Elder and Cassius Dio, as well as epigraphic evidence. In this specific instance, to find out the real reason of Petro…

Vertical transmission of naturally occurring Bunyamwera and insect-specific flavivirus infections in mosquitoes from islands and mainland shores of L…

2018

Background Many arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes have been implicated as causative agents of both human and animal illnesses in East Africa. Although epidemics of arboviral emerging infectious diseases have risen in frequency in recent years, the extent to which mosquitoes maintain pathogens in circulation during inter-epidemic periods is still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether arboviruses may be maintained by vertical transmission via immature life stages of different mosquito vector species. Methodology We collected immature mosquitoes (egg, larva, pupa) on the shores and islands of Lake Baringo and Lake Victoria in western Kenya and reared them to adults. Mo…

Copper(II)-Binding Induces a Unique Polyproline Type II Helical Structure within the Ion-Binding Segment in the Intrinsically Disordered F-Domain of …

2019

Reproduction of the dominant vector of Zika and dengue diseases, Aedes aegypti mosquito, is controlled by an active heterodimer complex composed of the 20-hydroxyecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle protein. Although A. aegypti EcR shares the structural and functional organization with other nuclear receptors, its C-terminus has an additional long F domain (AaFEcR). Recently, we showed that the full length AaFEcR is intrinsically disordered with the ability to specifically bind divalent metal ions. Here, we describe the details of the exhaustive structural and thermodynamic properties of Zn2+- and Cu2+-complexes with the AaFEcR domain, based on peptide models of its two putative metal …

Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT.

2017

The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 (19.5%), 2-2-1/1 (14.6%) and 2-1-1/1 (13.0%). A 1-1-1/1 configuration was observed in 93.5% and in 96.7% in the distobuccal and …

Analysis of the Architectural heritage of El-Mansoura city, Egypt: towards urban conservation approach

2011

Mansoura city is one of the Egyptian intermediate cities in the Nile delta, The city center heritage are in mostly the European Mediterranean style because of the presence of the foreigners in the city spatially Greek and Italian communities during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As many other Egyptian intermediate cities, the city heritage suffers from lack of maintenance and the absence of organized conservation programs. El-Mansoura architectural heritage are divided into main five zones around the city center. The first is the “private palaces and villas zone” in the west of the city center, it was the residence of the aristocratic Egyptians. The second is the “Northern city cen…

THE CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINABLE HISTORICAL CENTERS: THE CASE OF ROSETTE, EGYPT

2011

Historical centers of many Egyptian cities managed to survive as living cities in spite of physical decline and economic depression. Their fabric carries out the spiritual and cultural messages that communicate with their present citizens. The heritage of these historic city centers are not only Material character, but much more. Generally, the conservation of historic centers is fundamentally different from conservation of single monument. While a single monument can be kept on a chosen state of evolution, the historic centers cannot be preserved in particular state “with exception of the small areas conserved for tourist purposes”. The historic centers, as living cities must meet the vary…

Jouer avec les dieux : la katábasis de Rhampsinite dans l’Hadès (Hdt., II, 122)

2016

The second book of Herodotus’ Histories on Egypt tells the story of the katábasis of the wealthy and happy pharaoh Rhampsinitus, who descended into Hades while still alive. In the Underworld the ruler played dice with Demeter: sometimes he won, sometimes he lost. Returning from Hades he brought back a small golden cloth as a gift from the goddess. According to Herodotus, the Egyptians celebrate the return of the king with a festival during which one of the priests is blindfolded and led to the road to the sanctuary of Demeter. From here on he is guided by two wolves that later take him back to the starting point. The elements of this story, and in particular the links between katábasis, kin…

Soknopaiou Nesos project 2019. Il survey 3D e il survey ceramologico

2020

In 2019, in the framework of the Soknopaiou Nesos Project (University of the Salento, Lecce, Italy), two research teams began a multidisciplinary survey atDime es-Seba. One team conducted a 3D survey with a view to generating a digital model of the entire site using Camera Scanner-based techniques while the other undertook a survey in order to obtain knowledge of the spatial and chronological development of the settlement. The survey aims to create a Topographical Atlas which will support the acquisition of evidence for addressing specific archaeological problems concerning the city. The project will also contribute to the protection, conservation and monitoring of the site.
