Denoising of gravitational wave signals via dictionary learning algorithms

2016

Gravitational wave astronomy has become a reality after the historical detections accomplished during the first observing run of the two advanced LIGO detectors. In the following years, the number of detections is expected to increase significantly with the full commissioning of the advanced LIGO, advanced Virgo and KAGRA detectors. The development of sophisticated data analysis techniques to improve the opportunities of detection for low signal-to-noise-ratio events is, hence, a most crucial effort. In this paper, we present one such technique, dictionary-learning algorithms, which have been extensively developed in the last few years and successfully applied mostly in the context of image…

Cosmological data analysis of f(R) gravity models

2009

A class of well-behaved modified gravity models with long enough matter domination epoch and a late-time accelerated expansion is confronted with SNIa, CMB, SDSS, BAO and H(z) galaxy ages data, as well as current measurements of the linear growth of structure. We show that the combination of geometrical probes and growth data exploited here allows to rule out f(R) gravity models, in particular, the logarithmic of curvature model. We also apply solar system tests to the models in agreement with the cosmological data. We find that the exponential of the inverse of the curvature model satisfies all the observational tests considered and we derive the allowed range of parameters. Current data s…

On the relation between 2+1 Einstein gravity and Chern Simons theory

1999

A simple example is given to show that the gauge equivalence classes of physical states in Chern Simons theory are not in one-to-one correspondence with those of Einstein gravity in three spacetime dimensions. The two theories are therefore not equivalent. It is shown that including singular metrics into general relativity has more, and in fact a quite counter-intuitive, impact on the theory than one naively expects.

(2+1)-dimensional Einstein-Kepler problem in the centre-of-mass frame

1999

We formulate and analyze the Hamiltonian dynamics of a pair of massive spinless point particles in (2+1)-dimensional Einstein gravity by anchoring the system to a conical infinity, isometric to the infinity generated by a single massive but possibly spinning particle. The reduced phase space \Gamma_{red} has dimension four and topology R^3 x S^1. \Gamma_{red} is analogous to the phase space of a Newtonian two-body system in the centre-of-mass frame, and we find on \Gamma_{red} a canonical chart that makes this analogue explicit and reduces to the Newtonian chart in the appropriate limit. Prospects for quantization are commented on.

Solvable Models for radiating Black Holes and Area-preserving Diffeomorphisms

1995

Solvable theories of 2D dilaton gravity can be obtained from a Liouville theory by suitable field redefinitions. In this paper we propose a new framework to generate 2D dilaton gravity models which can also be exactly solved in the semiclassical approximation. Our approach is based on the recently introduced scheme to quantize massless scalar fields coupled to 2D gravity maintaining invariance under area-preserving diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. Starting from the CGHS model with the new effective action we reestablish the full diffeomorphism invariance by means of an adequate family of field redefinitions. The original theory is therefore mapped into a large family of solvable mo…

Robustness of braneworld scenarios against tensorial perturbations

2015

Inspired by the peculiarities of the effective geometry of crystalline structures, we reconsider thick brane scenarios from a metric-affine perspective. We show that for a rather general family of theories of gravity, whose Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the metric and the Ricci tensor, the background and scalar field equations can be written in first-order form, and tensorial perturbations have a non negative definite spectrum, which makes them stable under linear perturbations regardless of the form of the gravity Lagrangian. We find, in particular, that the tensorial zero modes are exactly the same as predicted by Einstein's theory regardless of the scalar field and gravitational…

Torsion formulation of gravity

2009

We explain precisely what it means to have a connection with torsion as a solution of the Einstein equations. While locally the theory remains the same, the new formulation allows for topologies that would have been excluded in the standard formulation of gravity. In this formulation it is possible to couple arbitrary torsion to gauge fields without breaking the gauge invariance.

Generalized Ashtekar variables for Palatini f(R) models

2021

We consider special classes of Palatini f(R) theories, featured by additional Loop Quantum Gravity inspired terms, with the aim of identifying a set of modified Ashtekar canonical variables, which still preserve the SU(2) gauge structure of the standard theory. In particular, we allow for affine connection to be endowed with torsion, which turns out to depend on the additional scalar degree affecting Palatini f(R) gravity, and in this respect we successfully construct a novel Gauss constraint. We analyze the role of the additional scalar field, outlining as it acquires a dynamical character by virtue of a non vanishing Immirzi parameter, and we describe some possible effects on the area ope…

Running Newton Constant, Improved Gravitational Actions, and Galaxy Rotation Curves

2004

A renormalization group (RG) improvement of the Einstein-Hilbert action is performed which promotes Newton's constant and the cosmological constant to scalar functions on spacetime. They arise from solutions of an exact RG equation by means of a ``cutoff identification'' which associates RG scales to the points of spacetime. The resulting modified Einstein equations for spherically symmetric, static spacetimes are derived and analyzed in detail. The modifications of the Newtonian limit due to the RG evolution are obtained for the general case. As an application, the viability of a scenario is investigated where strong quantum effects in the infrared cause Newton's constant to grow at large …
