Dynamic Triggering of Mud Volcano Eruptions During the 2016-2017 Central Italy Seismic Sequence

2017

On 24 August 2016 a seismic event (Mw 6.0) was the first of the long Central Italy sequence (ongoing at the end of 2017) of medium-to-high magnitude earthquakes, with nine Mw ≥5 up to October 2017, and with about 74.000 seismic events registered after one year. The largest was the Mw 6.5 30 October 2016 event near Norcia. After the major seismic events, seventeen mud volcanoes erupted around Monteleone di Fermo village (Marche region). Mud volcano eruptions generally occurred a few hours to a few days after the main earthquakes, suggesting a seismic triggering. We analyzed the peak ground velocities (PGV) and dynamic stresses during the three largest earthquakes. We also evaluated the stati…

Seismic sources and stress transfer interaction among axial normal faults and external thrust fronts in the Northern Apennines (Italy): A working hyp…

2016

In this study we analyse the main potential seismic sources in some axial and frontal sectors of the Northern Apennines, in Italy. This region was hit by a peculiar series of earthquakes that started in 1916 on the external thrust fronts near Rimini. Later, in 1917-1921, seismicity (up to Mw approximate to 6.5) shifted into the axial zone and clearly migrated north-westward, along the belt of active normal faults. The collection of fault-slip data focused on the active normal faults potentially involved in this earthquake series. The acquired data allowed us to better characterize the geometry and kinematics of the faults. In a few instances, the installation of local seismic networks durin…

The effect of microscale pore structure on matrix diffusion—a site-specific study on tonalite

1997

Abstract The matrix diffusion of non-sorbing tracers was studied in rocks from the Syyry area, Central Finland (SY1). The effect of alteration and weathering on rock matrix porosity and on the available pore space, which affects diffusivity, are discussed. The main rock type in the crystalline bedrock of Syyry is a slightly foliated, gray tonalite with mica gneiss inclusions as well as minor, more mafic inclusions. The total porosity and the spatial porosity distribution and microstructure of the rocks were investigated using infiltration of carbon- 14-methylmethacrylate, electron microscopy and Hg-porosimetry. The laboratory-scale diffusion experiments were performed using (1) the out-leac…

Neoproterozoic eclogite- to high-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism in the Mozambique belt of east-central Tanzania: A petrological, geochemical …

2017

Abstract This study investigated Neoproterozoic (Pan-African) eclogite- and high-pressure-granulite (E-HPG) facies rocks from the Mozambique belt of east-central Tanzania, collected close to the town of Ifakara and the adjacent Furua area from different tectonic settings, the Palaeoproterozoic Usagaran and the Neoproterozoic Mozambique belt. The studied rocks are E-HPG facies granite- and diorite-gneisses and a meta-gabbroic rock, which are retrogressed to amphibolite- and greenschist-facies conditions. Four different clockwise P-T paths were constructed. The first P-T path for a granodioritic gneiss displays peak metamorphic conditions at ~ 830 °C and ~ 13.0 kbar. The second P-T path for a…

New P-T-X conditions for the formation of gem tsavorite garnet in the Voi area (southwestern Kenya)

2018

International audience; Tsavorite nodules-bearing deposits from southwestern Kenya are located in the Kurase Group, a metasedimentary unit of the Neoproterozoic Metamorphic Mozambique Belt. This unit is composed of graphitic paragneisses intercalated with metacarbonates and metaevaporites, surrounded by migmatites. The rocks underwent high grade metamorphism at 615-600 Ma. The main goal of this work is to link tsavorite formation to the metamorphic evolution of the Kurase Group. The new thermobarometric data indicate widespread granulite facies conditions at 800 +/- 50 degrees C and 10 +/- 1 kbar, with no significant difference between the tsavorite-bearing metasediments and the surrounding…

High-grade metamorphism and partial melting in Archean composite grey gneiss complexes

2016

Much of the exposed Archaean crust is composed of composite gneiss which includes a large proportion of intermediate to tonalitic material. These gneiss terrains were typically metamorphosed to amphibolite to granulite facies conditions, with evidence for substantial partial melting at higher grade. Recently published activity–composition (a-x) models for partial melting of metabasic to intermediate compositions allows calculation of the stable metamorphic minerals, melt production and melt composition in such rocks for the first time. Calculated P–T pseudosections are presented for six bulk rock compositions taken from the literature, comprising two metabasic compositions, two intermediate…

The 2009 Edition of the GEISA Spectroscopic Database

2011

The updated 2009 edition of the spectroscopic database GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques; Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described in this paper. GEISA is a computer-accessible system comprising three independent sub-databases devoted, respectively, to: line parameters, infrared and ultraviolet/visible absorption cross-sections, microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. In this edition, 50 molecules are involved in the line parameters sub-database, including 111 isotopologues, for a total of 3,807,997 entries, in the spectral range from 10-6 to 35,877.031cm-1.The successful performances of the new …

Zipper junctions: A new approach to the intersections of conjugate strike-slip faults

2016

Intersecting pairs of simultaneously active faults with opposing slip sense present geometrical and kinematic problems. Such faults rarely offset each other but usually merge into a single fault, even when they have displacements of many kilometers. The space problems involved are solved by lengthening the merged fault (zippering up the conjugate faults) or splitting it (unzippering). This process can operate in thrust, normal, and strike-slip fault settings. Examples of conjugate pairs of large-scale strike-slip faults that may have zippered up include the Garlock and San Andreas faults in California (USA), the North and East Anatolian faults (Turkey), the Karakoram and Altyn Tagh faults (…

Single zircon U–Pb ages and geochemistry of granitoid gneisses from SW Poland: evidence for an Avalonian affinity of the Brunian microcontinent

2010

AbstractSeven granitoid gneisses from the contact zone between the eastern margin of the Variscan belt and the Brunian microcontinent in SW Poland have been dated by ion-microprobe and207Pb/206Pb single zircon evaporation methods. The zircons define two age groups for the gneiss protoliths: (1) late Neoproterozoicc.576–560 Ma and (2) early Palaeozoicc.488–503 Ma granites. The granitoid gneisses belonging to the basement of the Brunian microcontinent contain abundant Mesoproterozoic to latest Palaeoproterozoic inherited material in the range of 1200–1750 Ma. The gneisses of the Variscan crustal domain lack Mesoproterozoic inherited zircon cores. Trace element geochemistry of Proterozoic gnei…

P and S wave travel time tomography of the SE Asia-Australia collision zone

2019

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. The southeast (SE)Asia - Australia collision zone is one of the most tectonically active and seismogenic regions in the world. Here, we present new 3-D P- and S-wave velocity models of the crust and upper mantle by applying regional earthquake travel-time tomography to global catalogue data. We first re-locate earthquakes provided by the standard ISC-Reviewed and ISC-EHB catalogues using a non-linear oct-tree scheme. A machine learning algorithm that clusters earthquakes depending on their spatiotemporal density was then applied to significantly improve the consistency of travel-time picks. We used the Fast Marching Tomography software package to retrieve 3-D velocity a…
