Valuma-alueen maankäyttö ja muu ihmistoiminta ovat muuttaneet virtavesien tilaa monin paikoin hyvin merkittävästi. Suomen vesienhoitolain tavoite on, että vesien tila on vähintään hyvä vuoteen 2015 mennessä. Vesienhoitoasetuksen mukaan pintavesien tilaa tulee arvioida ensisijaisesti vesieliöstön (kalojen, pohjaeläinten, levien ja vesikasvien) avulla, fysikaalisen ja kemiallisen seurannan ollessa näiden tukena. Virtavesien tilan arvioinnissa eräänä biologisena tekijänä käytetään koskipaikkojen pohjaeläinyhteisöjä. Näitä kysymyksiä John Loehr valotti väitöskirjassaan.Ohutsarvilammas on pohjoisamerikkalainen villilammaslaji, joka elää Alaskan ja Pohjois-Kanadan vuoristoissa. Laji on mielenkiintoinen värivaihtelunsa takia. Suurin osa populaatioista on täysin valkoisia, mutta kolmesta vuoristosta löytyy harmaita ja mustia lampaita. Are habitat loss, predation risk and climate related to the drastic decline in a Siberian flying squirrel population? A 15 year study

To devise effective conservation actions, it is important to know which factors are associated with the population parameters of a declining population. Using mark–recapture methods, we estimated the annual population size, growth rate and survival probability of an ear-tagged flying squirrel population over a 15-year period in a 4,500 ha study area in western Finland. The species is considered vulnerable, but detailed knowledge concerning population sizes or trends is lacking. Aikamme suurin haaste ei ole luotettavan tiedon puuttuminen vaan toimintatapojemme muuttaminen. Kasvatus ja koulutus ovat ratkaisevia, jotta käytäntöjämme voisi muuttaa sosiaalisesti ja ekologisesti kestävämmiksi maapallon ekosysteemien ollessa kriisissä. Tässä artikkelissa hahmotellaan käytäntöteoreettista näkökulmaa kestävän elämänmuodon edistämiseksi kasvatuksen ja sivistyksen avulla. Ratkaisuksi ongelmaan on ehdotettu ekososiaalisen sivistyksen lisäämistä. Perinteinen tulkinta sivistyksestä on kuitenkin ongelmallinen sen ollessa kognitiivisesti painottunutta, abstraktia ja ihmiskeskeistä.
