From crystal to glass-like thermal conductivity in crystalline minerals

2015

Équipe 103 : Composés intermétalliques et matériaux hybrides; International audience; The ability of some materials with a perfectly ordered crystal structure to mimic the heat conduction of amorphous solids is a remarkable physical property that finds applications in numerous areas of materials science, for example, in the search for more efficient thermoelectric materials that enable to directly convert heat into electricity. Here, we unveil the mechanism in which glass-like thermal conductivity emerges in tetrahedrites, a family of natural minerals extensively studied in geology and, more recently, in thermoelectricity. By investigating the lattice dynamics of two tetrahedrites of very c…

Fibre break processes in unidirectional composites

2014

International audience; A model to predict the effects of the accumulation of fibre breakages in unidirectional carbon fibre composites has been developed that takes into account several physical phenomena controlling fibre failure, including the stochastic nature of fibre strength, stress transfer between fibres due to the shear of the matrix, interfacial debonding and viscosity of the matrix. The damage processes leading up to failure are discussed and quantified, first in terms of fibre breaks for the case of monotonically increasing tensile loading, then for sustained loading and finally the implications for more complex loads and structures are discussed. It is clearly shown that the f…

Linear and nonlinear fractional hereditary constitutive laws of asphalt mixtures

2016

The aim of this paper is to propose a fractional viscoelastic and viscoplastic model of asphalt mixtures using experimental data of several tests such as creep and creep recovery performed at different temperatures and at different stress levels. From a best fitting procedure it is shown that both the creep one and recovery curve follow a power law model. It is shown that the suitable model for asphalt mixtures is a dashpot and a fractional element arranged in series. The proposed model is also available outside of the linear domain but in this case the parameters of the model depend on the stress level.

7.22 Health Monitoring of High Performance Composite Pressure Vessels

2018

The most important form of damage in carbon fiber reinforced composite pressure vessels is the failure of the fibers however the rate of fiber failure is controlled by the viscoelastic nature of the matrix, which determines overall in-service lifetimes. This type of damage is very different from that encountered with metal pressure vessels and requires a detailed understanding in order to ensure reliability. Innovative proof testing methods based on these processes are necessary. The damage processes and the means of quantifying them are discussed. Their reliability under pressure over periods of decades is analyzed. Intrinsic safety factors linked directly to the properties of the composit…

Ab initio study of the mechanical and electronic properties of scheelite-type XWO4(X = Ca, Sr, Ba) compounds

2017

The structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of scheelite-type CaWO4, SrWO4, and BaWO4 have been investigated using density-functional theory (DFT) within the generalized-gradient approximation (GGA). In particular, we have studied the effect of pressure in the crystal structure, elastic constants [Formula: see text], elastic moduli ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]), and elastic anisotropy. We have also investigated the band structure of the three studied compounds and the effect of pressure in their electronic bandgap. The obtained results compare well with experimental results regarding the high-pressure (HP) behavior of the crystal structure. Th…

Quantifiable analysis of the failure of advanced carbon fibre composite structures leading to improved safety factors

2022

Abstract The increasing use of advanced composite materials means that they must now be considered as major materials for a wide variety of structures some of which will be in service for decades. There is therefore an important need to be able to quantify damage accumulation leading to failure in these materials particularly as they are often used in extreme situations for which failure must be avoided. This review shows how damage accumulation in many major composite structures is dominated by fibre failure but that the viscoelastic nature of the matrix induces time effects including delayed failure. It is shown that damage accumulation can be quantitatively modelled using a multi-scale a…

Solid-fluid interaction in a pillar-based phononic crystal

2016

In this paper, we investigate the wave dispersion of two dimensional pillar-based phononic crystal surrounded in liquid medium. An unit cell structure with reduced pillar height (hp/a)=0.5 and reduced radius (rp/a)=0.3 is simulated using Finite Element Method. The geometrical parameter is chosen to demonstrate a local resonance mechanism that allow the confinement of elastic energy at the interface between the solid and the fluid. In order to identify the energy distribution, we represent the eigenmode at high symmetry (point X) in the first Brillouin zone. The decreasing trend of frequency is also boosted with the increase of pillar height. From the total displacement, the energy is mostly…

Practical Model for Load-Carrying Capacity of Eccentrically Loaded Square Column Footings

2018

In this paper, a practical calculus model based on the strut-and-tie approach for prediction of the load-carrying capacity of eccentrically loaded RC column footings with square cross sections is presented. Existing models based on beam or slab models with flexural and two-way slab punching shear failure are presented and discussed. Several subgrade contact pressure distributions for column footings are considered. A parametric analysis of the effects of footing and column dimensions (depth, width), longitudinal ratio of longitudinal steel, and strength of concrete and steel is made for all models examined. Available experimental data are utilized to verify the model in comparison with exis…

Analytical modelling of force transmission in axially loaded RC columns with indirectly loaded jackets

2019

Abstract Concrete and steel jacketing are common strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axial loads. In the most of cases the external jacket is made leaving gaps between the strengthening layer and the slabs, avoiding to carry directly a portion of the load. In this way, the external jacket induces a confinement pressure on the inner column, and its beneficial effect is due to the increase of strength and ductility. However, shear stresses develop on the interface between the column and consequently, the external jacket can be considered indirectly loaded. It sustains a portion of the axial load, which depends by the value of the axial shortening, relati…

Approximate Solution on Large Deflection of Glass Panels Subjected to Uniform Pressure

2015

The estimation of the deflection of glass panels under wind pressure is important in designing external facades of buildings. A direct method to compute the large deflections of glass panels under uniform loads such as wind pressure is presented. The model allows for derivation of the load-deflection response of square or rectangular multilayered glass panels subject to uniform loads. The boundary conditions examined are those of four-point discontinuous supports or continuous supports along the four sides. With some assumptions on bending and membrane action of flat glasses, simple analytical expressions were derived from the elastic theory. Viscoelastic effects for multilayered glass pane…
