Moisture dependence on mechanical properties of pine nuts from Pinus pinea L.
2012
Abstract Mechanical properties of pine nut shell are very important in the cracking process. Before industrial cracking shell moisture is adjusted by water soaking in order to avoid the breaking up of the nuts. In this work the moisture dependence of the mechanical properties of pine nut shells were studied in order to improve the industrial cracking process. Relationship between nut size and moisture content was studied and no significant differences were found for shell dimensions at four different moisture levels, 9.79%, 16.71%, 20.98% and 25.05% (dry basis). Compression tests were carried out on pine nuts at nine different moisture contents between 1.38% and 25.48% (db) and their main m…

Seawater carbonate chemistry and shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength of four Mediterranean gastropod species near a CO2 seep
2017
Marine CO2 seeps allow the study of the long-term effects of elevated pCO2 (ocean acidification) on marine invertebrate biomineralization. We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on shell composition and structure in four ecologically important species of Mediterranean gastropods (two limpets, a top-shell snail, and a whelk). Individuals were sampled from three sites near a volcanic CO2 seep off Vulcano Island, Italy. The three sites represented ambient (8.15 pH), moderate (8.03 pH) and low (7.73 pH) seawater mean pH. Shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength were examined in all four species. We found that the calcite/aragonite ratio could vary and increased sign…
An approach to the measurement of the nonlinear refractive index of very short lengths of optical fibers
2018
A method for the measurement of the nonlinear-refractive index coefficient in single-mode optical fibers is presented. It takes advantage of the high sensitivity of the acousto-optic interaction effect in optical fibers to the fiber properties. Direct measurement of the nonlinear-refractive index change resulting from cross-phase modulation between a probe and a pump signal is obtained from the fiber's acousto-optic interaction performance. It is a non-interferometric method in which a very short length of fiber (<0.25 m) is required.
Analysis and design of elastic plastic structures subjected to dynamic loads
In the last decades, the concept of “optimization” has reached considerable value in many different fields of scientific research and, in particular, it has assumed great importance in the field of structural mechanics. The present study describes and shows the scientific path followed in the three years of doctoral studies. The state of the art concerning the optimization of elastic plastic structures subjected to quasi-static loads was already well established at the beginning of the Ph.D. course. Actually, it was already faced the study of structures subjected to quasi-static cyclic loads able to ensure different structural behaviors in relation to different intensity levels of the appli…
Optimal design of elastic plastic frames accounting for seismic protection devices
2013
The optimal design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames with or without suitable protection devices and subjected to static as well as seismic loadings is studied. Two minimum volume problem formulations are proposed, on the grounds of the so-called statical approach, accounting for three different resistance limits: the purely elastic limit, the (elastic) shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit. The adopted load combinations are characterized by the presence of fixed loads, of quasi-static perfect cyclic loads and dynamic (seismic) loads. The linear elastic effects of the dynamic actions are studied by utilizing a modal technique. The proposed treatment is referred to the…
A multicriterion design of steel frames with shakedown constraints
2006
The minimum volume design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to fixed and cyclic loads is searched in such a way that the structure remains in elastic field in serviceability conditions, while it is subjected to alternating plasticity under very strong cyclic actions, incremental and instantaneous collapse being prevented. The problem is faced on the grounds of a statical and a kinematical approach. The Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the two problems prove that they are each one the dual of the other and provide useful pieces of information about the structural behaviour. Numerical applications confirm the theoretical expectations: optimal designs turn out to be quite light, wit…
Optimization of continuous elastic perfectly plastic beams
2004
Abstract The optimal design of elastic plastic beams subjected to loads quasi-statically variable within a given domain is studied. A minimum volume formulation and a maximum load multiplier formulation are developed, both expressed on the grounds of a statical as well as of a kinematical approach. The search problems are formulated according to three different limiting criteria acting simultaneously. For each criterion a corresponding selected safety factor is imposed. The Euler–Lagrange equations related to the above described problems are deduced. A special iterative technique devoted to the solution of the above referenced problems is proposed. Some numerical examples conclude the paper.
Fixed strength and stiffness hinges for steel frames
2017
A new type of device able to connect steel beam elements is proposed. Specifically, the device is designed in such a way that the required bending stiffness and limit resistance can be independently imposed. To this goal, the device is realized as a "sandwich" section whose wings possess a particular geometry able to guarantee the required characteristics. Further technological requirement is that the device has to engage plan dimensions equal to those of the elements to which it is connected. The procedure to design the device is presented in the paper with reference to a simple plane steel portal constituted by appropriate profiles in such a way it behaves following an assigned force/disp…
