Magneto-elastic torsional oscillations of magnetars
2010
We extend a general-relativistic ideal magneto-hydrodynamical code to include the effects of elasticity. Using this numerical tool we analyse the magneto-elastic oscillations of highly magnetised neutron stars (magnetars). In simulations without magnetic field we are able to recover the purely crustal shear oscillations within an accuracy of about a few per cent. For dipole magnetic fields between 5 x 10^13 and 10^15 G the Alfv\'en oscillations become modified substantially by the presence of the crust. Those quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) split into three families: Lower QPOs near the equator, Edge QPOs related to the last open field line and Upper QPOs at larger distance from the equa…
Beyond the Standard Model at HERA
2007
The prospects of physics beyond the standard model in deep inelastic scattering are reviewed, emphasizing the search for contact interactions, for leptoquarks and for supersymmetry with R-parity violation, R-parity violating supersymmetry is explored as a speculative source of events with high energy muons and missing transverse momentum, but no convincing explanation for events of this type observed at HI is found.
Investigation of the elastic and inelastic scattering of 4He from 11B in the energy range 29-50.5 MeV
2018
We have measured the angular distributions for the elastic and inelastic scattering of 4He from 11B in the isochronous cyclotron U-150 M INP RK. The extracted α-particles beam has been accelerated to energy 29 MeV and then directed to 11B target. The experimental results were analyzed within the framework of both the optical model using different complex potential and the double folding potential obtained with different density-dependent NN interactions which give the corresponding values of the nuclear incompressibility K in the Hartree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter.
Reaction dynamics and nuclear structure studies via deep inelastic collisions with heavy-ions: spin and parity assignment in49Ca
2011
The population and gamma decay of neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca has been measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using deep-inelastic collisions (DIC) on 64Ni, at an energy approximately twice the Coulomb barrier. The reaction properties of the main products are investigated, focusing on total cross sections and angular distributions both integrated in energy and associated to the population of specific excited states. Gamma spectroscopy studies are also performed, giving evidence, for the first time in transfer reactions with heavy ions, of a large spin alignment (~70%), perpendicular to the reaction plane. This makes possible the use of angular distributions…
Study of the structure of the Hoyle state by refractive α-scattering
2014
α + 12C elastic and inelastic to the Hoyle state (0+ 2, 7.65 MeV) differential cross-sections were measured at the energies 60 and 65 MeV with the aim of testing the microscopic wave function [1] widely used in modern structure calculations of 12C. Deep rainbow (Airy) minima were observed in all four curves. The minima in the inelastic angular distributions are shifted to the larger angles relatively those in the elastic ones, which testify the radius enhancement of the Hoyle state. In general, the DWBA calculations failed to reproduce the details of the cross sections in the region of the rainbow minima in the inelastic scattering data. However, by using the phenomenological density with r…
Rotational Transitions of CO+Induced by Atomic Hydrogen
2008
The CO+ molecular ion has been observed in photon-dominated regions. Recent modeling has not been able to explain the abundances of CO+ in these regions. The most abundant collision partners are believed to be hydrogen atoms, hydrogen molecules, and electrons. The reactions of these species with CO+ have been studied previously and found to be fast. The only inelastic processes studied before were collisions of CO+ with electrons. Here we investigate the inelastic collisions of CO+ with hydrogen atoms. We argue that this can be done on the lowest triplet electronic state. This implies that CO+ ions, in a hydrogen atom dominated surrounding, experiences a few inelastic collisions before reac…
Ideal Elastic-Plastic Oscillators Subjected to Stochastic Input
1999
Abstract The paper deals with the evaluation of the probabilistic response of an ideal elastic-plastic single degree of freedom oscillator subjected to a normal white noise. The analysis has been conducted on the hypothesis that accumulated plastic displacements are a compound homogeneous Poisson process independent of the external excitation. In this case plastic displacements can be treated as an additional external noise, to be identified, acting on a linear system. In the paper a time domain approach to obtain the two variable non stationary correlation function is proposed. Hence the evolutionary power spectral density function is also obtained. A numerical example is presented in orde…
RGB Photoelasticity: Review and Improvements
2010
: This paper considers the main developments of RGB photoelasticity with reference to the maximum measurable retardation. In this paper, a new procedure based on the standard error function evaluated on a subset of the calibration array is also proposed and experimentally tested. The experiments show that the filament lamp makes it possible to find retardations until approximately 4 fringe orders while the fluorescent lamp makes it possible to determine higher fringe orders (12 fringe orders in this paper) owing to the discrete spectrum of the source. The paper shows that, by using the incandescent lamp, the primary limiting factor is the lack of modulation of the R, G and B signals wherea…
Distribution of electric multipole strengths in58Ni
1983
Inelastic electron scattering of 124 and 180 MeV electrons from58Ni has been measured for momentum transfers of 0.4 fm−1≤q≤1.2 fm−1 with an energy resolution of 110 keV. Using DWBA form factors with Tassie transition densities, we have extracted the electric multipole strength forL≤4 residing in 28 discrete states and in the inelastic continuum below 22.5 MeV of excitation.
A general approach for the calculation of the energy levels and the inelastic neutron scattering cross-section of highly nuclear magnetic clusters
1997
Abstract We develop here a general approach to calculate in an efficient way the spin levels as well as the spin eigenfunctions and the INS intensities of clusters formed by large numbers of exchange-coupled magnetic metal ions. The approach is based on the successive use of the irreducible tensor operator techniques and takes into account all kinds of magnetic exchange interactions between the metal ions. The potentialities of this approach are illustrated from an example comprising nine exchange-coupled Ni (II) ions.
