Resonant X-Ray Scattering of Biological Systems
1987
Nearly all synchrotron radiation laboratories at high energy electron storage rings put enormous effort into the developement of resonant (anomalous) X-ray scattering techniques. So does the Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor (HASYLAB) at Hamburg. One of these intruments which is built in cooperation with the university of Mainz at the beam line A1 of the storage ring DORIS. How does the physics of resonant scattering enter into the design of the X-ray instrument.
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Nd2Fe14B and Y2Fe14B single crystals
1992
Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out on Nd 2 Fe 14 B and Y 2 Fe 14 B single crystals. Temperature dependent acoustic magnon dispersion curves have been found along the high-symmetry directions [0,0,1] and [1,0,0] with a gap at (0,0,2). Soft mode behaviour at spin wave vector q = 0 was observed for Nd 2 Fe 14 B near the spin reorientation temperature. The inelastic scattering intensity decreases steeply for larger q . Therefore, the dispersion curves could be measured until the middle of the Brillouin zone only. The experimental results are discussed in the frame of a classical spin wave model.
Acyclovir Delivery Matrices Based on Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Chitosan Semi-Interpenetrating Networks
2007
Abstract Chitosan matrix systems have been studied as potential vehicles for the prolonged release of acyclovir (ACV). The influence of chitosan concentration (from 0.83% to 1.67%) on viscoelastic properties of formulations with and without glyoxal was analyzed. For chitosan‐poly(ethylene glycol) 400 formulations loss modulus ( G ″) are greater than storage modulus ( G ′). This corresponds to the characteristic behavior of nonstructured systems. When glyoxal was added to the chitosan‐poly(ethylene glycol) 400 formulations, gelled matrix was obtained (i.e., G ′ is higher than G ″), except for the lowest chitosan concentration. ACV release rates for the both types of systems, with and without…
A Generalization of the Mean-Variance Analysis
2008
In this paper we consider a decision maker whose utility function has a kink at the reference point with different functions below and above this reference point. We also suppose that the decision maker generally distorts the objective probabilities. First we show that the expected utility function of this decision maker can be approximated by a function of mean and partial moments of distribution. This "mean-partial moments" utility generalizes not only the mean-variance utility of Tobin and Markowitz, but also the mean-semivariance utility of Markowitz. Then, in the spirit of Arrow and Pratt, we derive an expression for a risk premium when risk is small. Our analysis shows that a decision…
On the moving load problem in beam structures equipped with tuned mass dampers
2017
This paper proposes an original and efficient approach to the moving load problem on Euler–Bernoulli beams, with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic translational supports and rotational joints, and in addition, equipped with Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic tuned mass dampers (TMDs). While supports are taken as representative of external devices such as grounded dampers or in-span supports with flexibility and damping, the rotational joints may model rotational dampers or connections with flexibility and damping arising from imperfections or damage. The theory of generalised functions is used to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, which involves deriving exact complex eigenvalues and eigen…

Release of isoamyl acetate from starch pastes of various structures : thermodynamic and kinetic parameters
2004
The release of isoamyl acetate from starch-based matrices was studied on the basis of a cumulative dynamic headspace analysis. Two corn starches were compared, which are known to yield pastes and gels differing in their structures and properties. These properties were assessed by viscometry and viscoelastic measurements. Aroma release was discussed as a function of the structure and texture parameters of the matrix. The release curves obtained from water and from the various starch-based matrices at 25 degrees C showed similar patterns but differed in their initial slopes and in the final plateau values. The lowest initial slopes were obtained for the normal starch dispersions that formed g…
From single fiber to macro-level mechanics: A structural finite-element model for elastomeric fibrous biomaterials
2014
In the present work, we demonstrate that the mesoscopic in-plane mechanical behavior of membrane elastomeric scaffolds can be simulated by replication of actual quantified fibrous geometries. Elastomeric electrospun polyurethane (ES-PEUU) scaffolds, with and without particulate inclusions, were utilized. Simulations were developed from experimentally-derived fiber network geometries, based on a range of scaffold isotropic and anisotropic behaviors. These were chosen to evaluate the effects on macro-mechanics based on measurable geometric parameters such as fiber intersections, connectivity, orientation, and diameter. Simulations were conducted with only the fiber material model parameters a…
