Revisited mixed-value method via symmetric BEM in the substructuring approach

Abstract Within the Symmetric Boundary Element Method, the mixed-value analysis is re-formulated. This analysis method contemplates the subdivision of the body into substructures having interface kinematical and mechanical quantities. For each substructure an elasticity equation, connecting weighted displacements and tractions to nodal displacements and forces of the same interface boundary and to external action vector, is introduced. The assembly of the substructures is performed through both the strong and weak regularity conditions of the displacements and tractions. Nonlinear data description with Principal Polynomial Analysis

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been widely used for manifold description and dimensionality reduction. Performance of PCA is however hampered when data exhibits nonlinear feature relations. In this work, we propose a new framework for manifold learning based on the use of a sequence of Principal Polynomials that capture the eventually nonlinear nature of the data. The proposed Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) is shown to generalize PCA. A Viscoelastic Model for the Long-Term Deflection of Segmental Prestressed Box Girders

Most of segmental prestressed concrete box girders exhibit excessive multidecade deflections unforeseeable by past and current design codes. To investigate such a behavior, mainly caused by creep and shrinkage phenomena, an effective finite element (FE) formulation is presented in this article. This formulation is developed by invoking the stationarity of an energetic principle for linear viscoelastic problems and relies on the Bazant creep constitutive law. Two interesting problems are considered for enriching the curriculum of the Strength of Materials course, in the light of recently developed functionally graded materials (FGMs), characterized with the smooth variation of the elastic modulus. These are problems associated with buckling of columns with variable flexural rigidity along the axis of the column. Maximum Displacement Variability of Stochastic Structures Subject to Deterministic Earthquake Loading

The variability of the maximum response displacement of random frame structures under deterministic earthquake loading are examined in this paper using stochastic finite element techniques. The elastic modulus and the mass density are assumed to be described by cross-correlated stochastic fields. First Measurement of the $Q^2$ Dependence of the Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry for Elastic Scattering off Carbon

We report on the first Q^{2}-dependent measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry A_{n} in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV vertically polarized electrons off ^{12}C. We cover the Q^{2} range between 0.02 and 0.05  GeV^{2}/c^{2} and determine A_{n} at four different Q^{2} values. The experimental results are compared to a theoretical calculation that relates A_{n} to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. The result emphasizes that the Q^{2} behavior of A_{n} given by the ratio of the Compton to charge form factors cannot be treated independently of the target nucleus.

Density Functional Theory Investigation on the Nucleation and Growth of Small Palladium Clusters on a Hyper-Cross-Linked Polystyrene Matrix

Density functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the nucleation and growth of small palladium clusters, up to Pd9, into a microcavity of the porous hyper-cross-linked polystyrene (HPS). The geometries and the electronic structures of the palladium clusters inside the HPS cavity, following the one-by-one atom addition, are affected by a counterbalance between the Pd–phenyl (Pd−Φ) and Pd–Pd interactions. The analysis performed on energetics, cavity distortions, and cluster geometries indeed suggest that the cluster growth is dominated by the Pd−Φ interactions up to the formation of Pd4 aggregates, whereas the metal–metal interactions actually rule the growth of the larger c…

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers—Characterization as Networks

Abstract This paper summarises the properties of archiral and chiral liquid crystalline (LC) elastomers, the latter of which have found interest due to their piezoelectric properties. In addition the formation of new LC elastomers by a radical polymerization of acrylate groups covalently linked to LC polymers was investigated. This was done concerning the progress of the crosslinking reaction, concerning the influence of the crosslinking on the LC phases and concerning the network properties (swelling ratio and elastic modulus) of the resulting elastomers. High performance PA6/CNTs nanohybrid fibers prepared in the melt

Commercial and home-made carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were plasma treated under oxygen atmosphere and then added to polyamide 6 (PA6) in order to prepare fibres by melt spinning. For comparison, pristine nanofillers were used too. The effect of functionalization and of filler characteristics on the morphological, rheological, mechanical and electrical properties of the fibres was studied by TEM and SEM, rheological measurements, tensile and electrical conductivity tests.
