Porous structure and mechanical strength of cement-lime pastes during setting

Abstract The acceleration of a cement paste setting as a result of lime addition may be shown from isothermal calorimetry measurements. We investigated the underlying mechanisms through two techniques that provide information on porous structure (using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and mechanical properties (elastic modulus measured by rheometry). The correlation of the two sets of results on a cement paste clearly reveals the successive steps of setting, and particularly highlights the so-called induction period. Dynamic mode rheology of cement and tricalcium silicate pastes from mixing to setting

Dynamic mode rheometry was used to study the evolution of the structure of cement and pure tricalcium silicate pastes from mixing up to setting and even after setting, together with the nature of the forces responsible for the mechanical properties of the pastes. A special mixer-type tool was used to study rheology during the very first minutes following the end of mixing, which are out of reach with classical tools. Both kinds of pastes have the same behavior. Problems of dynamics and stability of a moving web, travelling between two rollers at a constant velocity, are studied using analytical approaches. Transverse vibrations of the web are described by a partial differential equation that includes the centrifugal force, in-plane tension, elastic reaction and nonstationary inertial terms. The model of a thin elastic plate subjected to bending and non-homogeneous tension is used to describe the bending moment and the distribution of membrane forces. Tin-DNA complexes investigated by nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation

Nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) of synchrotron radiation has been used to investigate the dynamics of tin ions chelated by DNA. Theoretical NIS spectra have been simulated with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations using 12 models for different binding sites of the tin ion in (CH3)Sn(DNAPhosphate)2. The simulated spectra are compared with the measured spectrum of the tin-DNA complex.
Creep and recovery of epoxy/MWCNT nanocomposites

Abstract Creep and creep–recovery of epoxy/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was studied in a wide range of applied loads in order to evaluate the contribution of nanotubes on the time-dependent behaviour of the epoxy matrix. Incorporation of up to 1 wt.% of C150P MWCNTs has negligible influence on the elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic response of the epoxy system. No systematic changes of the creep characteristics depending on the content of nanotubes are noticed in the range of stresses from 0.3 up to 0.75 from the ultimate strength. The ground-state properties of the tetranuclear Co2+ cluster [Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- were investigated by combining specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization measurements with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated sample of K10[Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]·22H2O. As a result of the single ion anisotropy of the octahedral Co2+, the appropriate exchange Hamiltonian of the Co4 spin cluster is anisotropic. The magnetic exchange interactions in a C0(3)(11) moiety encapsulated in Na(17) [(NaOH(2))Co(3)(H(2)O)(P(2)W(15)O(56))(2)] (NaCo(3)) were studied by a combination of magnetic measurements (magnetic susceptibility and low-temperature magnetization), with a detailed Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) investigation. The novel structure of the salt was determined by X-ray crystallography. The ferromagnetic Co(3)O(14) triangular cluster core consists of three octahedrally oxo-coordinated Co(II) ions sharing edges.
