Analytical model for high-strength concrete columns with square cross-section

2008

In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. The lateral pressure distributions at hoop levels are obtained by using a simple model of elastic beam on elastic medium simulating the interaction between stirrups and concrete core, including yielding of steel stirrups and dam…

Concrete softening effects on the axial capacity of RC jacketed circular columns

2016

Abstract Among the different strengthening techniques to repair RC structures, reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing is one of the most commonly adopted, especially for columns. Its wide application is due to its easy application and relatively reduced cost with respect to other methods (e.g. FRP wrapping, Shape Memory Alloy active confinement). The target of RC jacketing is to increase axial, flexural capacity and ductility of weak existing members by means of two main effects: confinement action provided by the jacket and composite action between external jacket and inner concrete. Different theoretical studies have been carried out to calculate the strength enhancement due to confinement ac…

Adapting available finite element structural programs to solve three-dimensional high frequency electromagnetic problems

1991

The adaptation of available structural mechanics software to solve microwave problems is possible by the analogy between the differential equations. A brief review of the analogy between transverse or shear waves in elasticity and electromagnetic waves is presented, followed by a more detailed discussion of the adaptation of a program to obtain the resonant frequencies of a rectangular resonant cavity, doing a three-dimensional analysis. The geometry of the electric field is also obtained for the resonant modes.

Bending test for capturing the fractional visco-elastic parameters: theoretical and experimental investigation on giant reeds

2014

In this paper attention is devoted on searching a proper model for characterizing the behavior of giant reeds. To aim at this, firstly, meticulous experimental tests have been performed in the Laboratory of structural materials of University of Palermo. Further, the novel aspect of this paper is that of using an advanced Euler-Bernoulli model to fit experimental data of bending tests. Such a model of continuum beam takes into account different constitutive laws of visco-elasticity, being real materials visco-elastic.

Mechanical behaviour of Palermo and Marsala calcarenites (Sicily), Italy

2016

Abstract This paper aims at finding a framework for the Sicilian Calcarenites relating the strength and the deformability of these materials to their geological and structural features: fabric, bonding, initial and actual specific volume. In particular, this study sets out to separate the effects of fabric and of bonding on the mechanical response. The investigated lithotypes, Calcarenites from Palermo and Marsala, outcropping in many areas of southwestern Sicily, are characterized by sudden changes in their deformability, strength and permeability characteristics. The geotechnical identification, by means of computerized axial tomography and thin section petrographic analysis suggested a s…

Simplified Procedure for Evaluating the Effects of Creep and Shrinkage on Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges and the Application of European and Nor…

2013

The effects of time-dependent phenomena on concrete prestressed girder bridges are investigated. The study concerns the case of bridges built directly in their final configuration and that of bridges built by a sequence of stages in which geometry, restraints, and loads vary until the final configuration is achieved. An analytical approach based on the principles of aging linear viscoelasticity and the age-adjusted effective modulus method is followed. The paper has two aims: the first is to provide an efficient and simplified tool for the evaluation of the structural response in the early stages of design; the second is to compare the results of the analyses on actual cases of bridges when…

Fatigue life prediction under wide band random loading

2004

In this paper, a method for the high-cycle fatigue life prediction of components subjected to gaussian, stationary, wide band random loading is presented. It allows the user to evaluate the fatigue life of components subjected to uniaxial stress states directly from the stress power spectral density (PSD), avoiding onerous simulations in time domain. The proposed method can be applied to random stress processes having PSD of any shape, and the fatigue life predictions obtained are more accurate than that provided by most of the frequency domain techniques proposed in literature.

An extension of the fractional model for construction of asphalt binder master curve

2015

Knowledge and prediction of viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder is of great interest in order to design asphalt mixtures for civil construction of road and airports with good performances. The capability of a fractional model – requiring a very limited number of parameters – to describe and predict the linear viscoelastic behaviour of asphalt binder subjected to sinusoidal oscillations is investigated. Experimental data of complex modulus, |G*|, and phase angle, δ, are used to validate the proposed constitutive model. Based on the proposed extension of a fractional model, complex modulus isotherms for a range of frequencies can be created simply starting from isochronals at frequency v…

Transient response of a TLP-type floating offshore wind turbine under tendon failure conditions

2021

Abstract Among various types of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), the tension leg platform (TLP) floating wind turbines have relatively small motions due to stiff tendons. Similar to TLP applications in the offshore industry, tendon failure may lead to deteriorated stability and large transient responses, which should be considered as part of accidental limit state (ALS) checks at the design stage of the TLP FOWTs. This paper takes the WindStar TLP system as a representative and investigates the transient effects of one-tendon failure on the system responses. A coupled numerical model is first established using the aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tool FAST. Subsequent numerical s…

Marginal abatement cost of carbon dioxide emissions in the provision of urban drinking water

2021

Abstract Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a major challenge faced by cities seeking to improve their environmental sustainability. Doing so requires a good understanding of the costs associated with lowering emissions and factors that may influence this cost. This study estimated the marginal abatement cost of reducing both direct and indirect CO2 emissions in the provision of drinking water by several water companies in England and Wales. The results indicated that during the years 2013–2018, the average cost to the English and Welsh water industry to prevent 1 kg of CO2 emissions was 0.264₤ which was equivalent to 61% of the price of the delivered drinking water The results of the Mor…
