The finite element method for the mechanically based model of non-local continuum

2011

SUMMARY In this paper the finite element method (FEM) for the mechanically based non-local elastic continuum model is proposed. In such a model each volume element of the domain is considered mutually interacting with the others, beside classical interactions involved by the Cauchy stress field, by means of central body forces that are monotonically decreasing with their inter-distance and proportional to the product of the interacting volume elements. The constitutive relations of the long-range interactions involve the product of the relative displacement of the centroids of volume elements by a proper, distance-decaying function, which accounts for the decrement of the long-range interac…

Mechanically-based approach to non-local elasticity: Variational principles

2010

Abstract The mechanically-based approach to non-local elastic continuum, will be captured through variational calculus, based on the assumptions that non-adjacent elements of the solid may exchange central body forces, monotonically decreasing with their interdistance, depending on the relative displacement, and on the volume products. Such a mechanical model is investigated introducing primarily the dual state variables by means of the virtual work principle. The constitutive relations between dual variables are introduced defining a proper, convex, potential energy. It is proved that the solution of the elastic problem corresponds to a global minimum of the potential energy functional. Mo…

One-dimensional heterogeneous solids with uncertain elastic modulus in presence of long-range interactions: Interval versus stochastic analysis

2013

The analysis of one-dimensional non-local elastic solids with uncertain Young's modulus is addressed. Non-local effects are represented as long-range central body forces between non-adjacent volume elements. For comparison purpose, the fluctuating elastic modulus of the material is modeled following both a probabilistic and a non-probabilistic approach. To this aim, a novel definition of the interval field concept, able to limit the overestimation affecting ordinary interval analysis, is introduced. Approximate closed-form expressions are derived for the bounds of the interval displacement field as well as for the mean-value and variance of the stochastic response.

Stress gradient versus strain gradient constitutive models within elasticity

2014

Abstract A stress gradient elasticity theory is developed which is based on the Eringen method to address nonlocal elasticity by means of differential equations. By suitable thermodynamics arguments (involving the free enthalpy instead of the free internal energy), the restrictions on the related constitutive equations are determined, which include the well-known Eringen stress gradient constitutive equations, as well as the associated (so far uncertain) boundary conditions. The proposed theory exhibits complementary characters with respect to the analogous strain gradient elasticity theory. The associated boundary-value problem is shown to admit a unique solution characterized by a Helling…

The transition from single layer to foliation boudinage: A dynamic modelling approach

2012

Abstract Foliation boudinage is a deflection of foliation in the vicinity of a central discontinuity in foliated rocks, mostly filled with vein material. It shows evidence for brittle deformation and void-opening during ductile flow. We used a two-dimensional visco-elastic spring model based on a discrete element approach to study the dynamic development of foliation boudinage and the behaviour of anisotropic visco-elastic material deformed under pure shear conditions. The anisotropies are set by defining rheological heterogeneities in the models with (1) a single layer in a weaker matrix; (2) multi-layers with different elastic properties and (3) random-distributed “micas”, rows of horizon…

On the hyperporous non-linear elasticity model for fusion-relevant pebble beds

2010

Abstract Packed pebble beds are particular granular systems composed of a large amount of small particles, arranged in irregular lattices and surrounded by a gas filling interstitial spaces. Due to their heterogeneous structure, pebble beds have non-linear and strongly coupled thermal and mechanical behaviours whose constitutive models seem limited, being not suitable for fusion-relevant design-oriented applications. Within the framework of the modelling activities promoted for the lithiated ceramics and beryllium pebble beds foreseen in the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed breeding blanket concept of DEMO, at the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo (DIN) a thermo-mechani…

Shear Effects in Elastic Nanobeams

2020

Small-scale, shear deformable nanobeams, subjected to quasi-static loads, are analyzed by a nonlocal (integral) elasticity model with the main goal to evaluate the influence of shear deformation on size effects. To this aim a warping parametric model is considered in order to obtain a continuous family of shear deformable beam models which span from the Euler-Bernoulli to the Thimoshenko beam model, passing from the Reddy model. The strain difference based nonlocal elasticity theory is applied under the hypotheses of small displacements and isotropic material. The results, obtained by analysing a cantilever nonlocal nanobeam, indicate that shear deformation has a considerable influence upon…

Modeling in cardiovascular biomechanics

2010

In this review, we briefly summarize some of Professor K.R. Rajagopal's contributions to the field of cardiovascular mechanics and highlight some applications that have employed his theories and have expanded the ability to model the complex behaviors that characterize biological tissues. His contributions, spawning directly from the classical nonlinear theories of mechanics, have had general impact in diverse fields of engineering. Within biomechanics per se, Rajagopal's efforts have provided state-of-the-art modeling tools not only to characterize tissues, such as blood vessels, cerebral aneurysms, or blood, but also to characterize their evolution, i.e. vessel growth and remodeling or bl…

Modulating carbohydrate-based hydrogels as viscoelastic lubricant substitute for articular cartilages

2017

Viscosupplementation is a therapeutic approach for osteoarthritis treatment, where the synovial fluid, the natural lubricant of the joints, is replaced by viscoelastic solutions with rheological properties comparable or better than the starting material. This study presents the development of an innovative platform for viscosupplementation, based on the optimization of polysaccharide-based colloidal hydrogel, aiming to reduce on-site enzyme degradation and enhance the possibility of hyaluronic acid substitution with alternative biomaterials. Catanionic vesicles are proposed as physical crosslinker that can guarantee the formation of a 'soft', tunable network, offering a dual-therapeutic app…
