A note on the higher order strain and stress tensors within deformation gradient elasticity theories: Physical interpretations and comparisons

Abstract Higher order strain and stress tensors encompassed within gradient elasticity theories are discussed with a particular concern to the physical meaning of double and triple stresses. A single rule is shown to hold for the physical interpretation of the indices of a higher order stress tensor both within distortion gradient and strain gradient theories, whereas the analogous Mindlin’s rule holds only within distortion gradient theories. Double and triple stresses are discussed separately with the aid of simple illustrative examples. A corrigendum to a previous paper by the author (IJSS 50 (2013) 3749–3765) is also presented.

A nonhomogeneous nonlocal elasticity model

Nonlocal elasticity with nonhomogeneous elastic moduli and internal length is addressed within a thermodynamic framework suitable to cope with continuum nonlocality. The Clausius–Duhem inequality, enriched by the energy residual, is used to derive the state equations and all other thermodynamic restrictions upon the constitutive equations. Dynamic mode rheology of cement and tricalcium silicate pastes from mixing to setting

Dynamic mode rheometry was used to study the evolution of the structure of cement and pure tricalcium silicate pastes from mixing up to setting and even after setting, together with the nature of the forces responsible for the mechanical properties of the pastes. A special mixer-type tool was used to study rheology during the very first minutes following the end of mixing, which are out of reach with classical tools. Both kinds of pastes have the same behavior. Creep and recovery of epoxy/MWCNT nanocomposites

Abstract Creep and creep–recovery of epoxy/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was studied in a wide range of applied loads in order to evaluate the contribution of nanotubes on the time-dependent behaviour of the epoxy matrix. Incorporation of up to 1 wt.% of C150P MWCNTs has negligible influence on the elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic response of the epoxy system. No systematic changes of the creep characteristics depending on the content of nanotubes are noticed in the range of stresses from 0.3 up to 0.75 from the ultimate strength. Commercial thickeners used by patients with dysphagia: Rheological and structural behaviour in different food matrices

In order to achieve a safe swallowing in patients with dysphagia, liquids must be thickened. In this work, two commercial starch based thickeners dissolved inwater,whole milk, apple juice and tomato juice were studied. The thickeners were Resource®, composed of modified maize starch and Nutilis®, composed of modified maize starch and gums. Relevance of creep and oscillatory tests for understanding how cellulose emulsions function as fat replacers in biscuits

Abstract The fats that are mostly employed in biscuit manufacturing contain a high percentage of saturated fatty acids, giving them the solid consistency that is needed for biscuit manufacture. For health reasons, lower levels of saturated fatty acids and elimination of trans fatty acids are desirable. An emulsion of sunflower oil, water and a cellulose ether was employed to replace all the conventional fat in a short dough recipe. Abstract Hydrogels for complex and chronic wound dressings must be conformable, absorb and retain wound exudates and maintain hydration. They can incorporate and release bioactive molecules that can accelerate the healing process. Thermal aggregation and ion-induced cold-gelation of bovine serum albumin

Protein cold-gelation has recently received particular attention for its relevance in bio and food technology. In this work, we report a study on bovine serum albumin cold-gelation induced by copper or zinc ions. Metal-induced cold-gelation of proteins requires two steps: during the first one, the heat treatment causes protein partial unfolding and aggregation; then, after cooling the solution to room temperature, gels are formed upon the addition of metal ions.
