Bortezomib induction, reduced-intensity transplantation, and lenalidomide consolidation-maintenance for myeloma: updated results.

2013

A sequential approach including bortezomib induction, intermediate-dose melphalan, and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), followed by lenalidomide consolidation-maintenance, has been evaluated. Efficacy and safety data have been analyzed on intention-to-treat and results updated. Newly diagnosed myeloma patients 65 to 75 years of age (n = 102) received 4 cycles of bortezomib-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin-dexamethasone, tandem melphalan (100 mg/m(2)) followed by ASCT (MEL100-ASCT), 4 cycles of lenalidomide-prednisone consolidation (LP), and lenalidomide maintenance (L) until disease progression. The complete response (CR) rate was 33% after MEL100-ASCT, 48% after LP and 53% after…

TAS-102 in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC): efficacy, tolerability, and quality of life in heavily pretreated elderly patients: a real-life study

2020

Background: TAS-102 is an oral monotherapy, combining trifluridine and tipiracil hydrochloride, indicated for the treatment of pretreated metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The aim of this real-life study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TAS-102 in heavily pretreated elderly patients with mCRC whose disease has progressed with standard therapies. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we enrolled 50 elderly patients >70 years of age (median age 78 years) with a diagnosis of mCRC who were previously treated or were not considered candidates for treatment with other available therapies. Patients aged >70 years with advanced colorectal cancer and with an ECOG perf…

“Comparison of the safety and efficacy of paclitaxel plus gemcitabine combination in young and elderly patients with locally advanced or metastatic n…

2008

We retrospectively assessed tolerability and efficacy of paclitaxel plus gemcitabine combination in 259 patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) enrolled in three randomized SICOG trials according to their age (70 years) at study entry. Apart from age, demographic and clinical characteristics were similar in the two groups. Response rate of paclitaxel plus gemcitabine was similar in younger and in elderly (36% versus 30%). Chemotherapy was well tolerated, but severe neutropenia (12% versus 7%), anaemia (6.6% versus 1.8%), and vomiting (5% versus 0) were more frequent in elderly patients. Both median progression-free survival (PFS, 5.5 months versus 4.2…

Mucormycosis in a healthy elderly patient presenting as oro-antral fistula: Report of a rare incidence

2015

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection that commonly affects patients who are immuno-compromised. It invariably presents as an acute spreading infection, with very poor prognosis if not treated promptly. We report a case of mucormycosis in immuno-competent elderly patient, presenting as oro-antral communication. Patient’s history, clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed no systemic predisposing factors. The disease was non-fulminant, localized and showed remission after local measures, without parentral anti-fungal therapy. Key words:Mucormycosis, maxilla, elderly, oroantral communication.

Successful “Salvage” Therapy of Intravenous Cyclophosphamide for Refractory Polymyositis in an Elderly Patient: Case Report

2006

Dermatomyositis and polymyositis may affect children and adults and are now widely recognized as major causes of disability which, thanks to the introduction of immunosuppressive drugs, is often treatable, at least to some extent. Few data exist regarding polymyositis in elderly patients. We describe a case of refractory life-threatening polymyositis in an elderly patient, successfully treated with intravenous cyclophosphamide.

Cetuximab and gemcitabine in elderly or adult PS2 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: The cetuximab in advanced lung cancer (CALC1-E a…

2009

Background:Two parallel randomized phase 2 trialswere performed to choose the optimal way of combining cetuximab with gemcitabine in the first-line treatment of elderly (CALC1-E) and adult PS2 (CALC1-PS2) patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods: Stage IV or IIIB NSCLC patients, aged ≥70 years with PS 0–2 for CALC1-E or aged <70 with PS2 for CALC1-PS2, not selected for EGFR expression, were eligible. Patients were randomized to concomitant (gemcitabine, for a maximum of 6 cycles, plus cetuximab until progression) or sequential (gemcitabine, for a maximum of 6 cycles, followed by cetuximab) strategy. A selection design, with 1-year survival rate as the primary endpoint, was applied, requiring 58…

PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF ESTIMATED GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE IN HOSPITALIZED ELDERLY PATIENTS

2013

A multicenter observational study, REPOSI (REgustri POliterapie Società Italiana di Medicina Interna), was conducted to assess the prognostic value of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on in-hospital mortality, hospital readmission and death within 3 months, in a sample of elderly patients (n=1,363) admitted to 66 internal medicine and geriatric wards. Bases on eGFR, calculated by the new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formula, subjects at hostpital admission were classified into three groups: group 1 with normal eGFR (60 ml/min/1.73m2, reference group), group 2 with moderately reduced eGFR (30-59 ml/min/1.73 m2) and group 3 with severely reduced eGFR (<30 ml/m…
