Medial Patellar Instability: A Little Known Cause of Anterior Knee Pain

2014

Anterior knee pain (AKP) is one of the most common patient complaints heard by orthopedic surgeons. A wide variety of causes of AKP have been ascribed to it. Medial patellar instability (MPI) is an objective condition with its own personality provoking incapacitating AKP that should be included in the differential diagnosis of AKP patients, above all in disabling AKP patients after realignment surgery. However, this condition can be difficult to diagnose because it is not well described in the medical literature. Its clinical repercussion was identified at the end of the 1980s. We can now state that it is an objective cause of AKP and that it is more frequent than we had thought, although i…

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues for palliation of carcinoma of the prostate

1983

Since the introduction of contrasexual treatment as the basic concept of palliation of prostatic carcinoma in the 1940's, orchiectomy, estrogens, and, in recent years, antiandrogens have become generally accepted treatment forms. Three facts: 1) estrogen treatment being at best palliative and at worst dangerous; 2) surgical castration having psychological impacts, at least in the younger age group; and 3) both being probably ineffective from the beginning, have led us to investigate an alternative of minimal toxicity and possible reversibility in the initial treatment of advanced prostatic carcinoma. 12 patients with far advanced carcinoma of the prostate were treated with the gonadotropin …

Increased Connexin 43 Expression as a Potential Mediator of the Neuroprotective Activity of the Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone

2009

CRH is a major central stress mediator, but also a potent neuroprotective effector. The mechanisms by which CRH mediates its neuroprotective actions are largely unknown. Here, we describe that the gap junction molecule connexin43 (Cx43) mediates neuroprotective effects of CRH toward experimentally induced oxidative stress. An enhanced gap junction communication has been reported to contribute to neuroprotection after neurotoxic insults. We show that CRH treatment up-regulates Cx43 expression and gap junctional communication in a CRH receptor-dependent manner in IMR32 neuroblastoma cells, primary astrocytes, and organotypic hippocampal slice cultures. MAPKs and protein kinase A-cAMP response…

A pilot study on non-invasive treatment of migraine: The self-myofascial release

2021

The aims of this paper was to determine the effect of self-myofascial release (SMFR) on postural stability and to analyze if it can influence migraine condition. Twenty-five subjects (age 49.7±12.5) affected by migraine were enrolled. Assessments included a stabilometric analysis in order to evaluate balance and plantar support, with eyes open (OE) and closed (CE); cervical ROM measurement; evaluation of upper limb strength through handgrip. All the analysis were carried out before and after the administration of a single SMFR protocol, using medium density small balls laid in the three most painful trigger points in migraine patients: trapezius, sternocleidomastoids and suboccipital muscle…

European guidelines on chronic mesenteric ischaemia - joint United European Gastroenterology, European Association for Gastroenterology, Endoscopy an…

2020

Chronic mesenteric ischaemia is a severe and incapacitating disease, causing complaints of post-prandial pain, fear of eating and weight loss. Even though chronic mesenteric ischaemia may progress to acute mesenteric ischaemia, chronic mesenteric ischaemia remains an underappreciated and undertreated disease entity. Probable explanations are the lack of knowledge and awareness among physicians and the lack of a gold standard diagnostic test. The underappreciation of this disease results in diagnostic delays, underdiagnosis and undertreating of patients with chronic mesenteric ischaemia, potentially resulting in fatal acute mesenteric ischaemia. This guideline provides a comprehensive overvi…

Assessment of the Inter-Batch Variability of Microstructure Parameters in Topical Semisolids and Impact on the Demonstration of Equivalence

2019

Demonstration of similar microstructure is essential for demonstrating the equivalence of generic topical products since the microstructure of semisolids may affect the drug release. The objective of this study was to compare the microstructure-defining physical parameters of different batches of a reference ointment containing calcipotriol and betamethasone (Daivobet 50 &micro

The influence of lateral release on patello-femoral joint loading in knee arthroplasty

1992

Eight fresh, cadaveric knees have been fitted with four different total knee cemented prostheses. Loading forces at the bone implant fixation interface of the patella component have been measured in a knee joint testing rig by four miniaturized force transducers, before and after a lateral release of the patellar retinaculum. The lateral release resulted in a significant local force reduction in the lateral and/or proximal quadrant of the patella resection plane depending on the knee flexion angle, quadriceps tensile force direction, and the patellar prosthesis design.

Warm-Up and Hamstrings Stiffness, Stress Relaxation, Flexibility, and Knee Proprioception in Young Soccer Players

2022

Context: Nerves or fascia may limit motion in young soccer players, thereby contributing to frequent hamstring injuries. Nerve gliding exercises and self-myofascial release techniques may enhance the range of motion. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the acute effect of foam rolling (FR) and neurodynamic nerve gliding (NDNG) on hamstring flexibility, passive stiffness, viscoelasticity and proprioception during the warm-up of soccer players. Design: Crossover study design. Setting: Research laboratory. Participants: Fifteen male soccer players on the same team (age 18.0 ± 1.4 years, body mass 76.9 ± 7.8 kg, height 183 ± 6 cm). Intervention: FR and NDNG included six sets of 45 s…
