A set of indicators for arc faults detection based on low frequency harmonic analysis

2016

In this paper a novel set of indicators is presented for arc faults detection in electrical circuits. The indicators are defined starting from an experimental characterization of the arc fault phenomenon and the study of the arcing current in several test conditions, which were chosen in accordance with the UL 1699 Standard requirements. The proposed parameters are measured by means of a high resolution low frequency spectral analysis of the arcing current, which allows to achieve a good spectral resolution even with short observation windows.

Arc Fault Detection Method Based on CZT Low-Frequency Harmonic Current Analysis

2017

This paper presents a method for the detection of series arc faults in electrical circuits, which has been developed starting from an experimental characterization of the arc fault phenomenon and an arcing current study in several test conditions. Starting from this, the authors have found that is it possible to suitably detect arc faults by means of a high-resolution low-frequency harmonic analysis of current signal, based on chirp zeta transform, and a proper set of indicators. The proposed method effectiveness is shown by means of experimental tests, which were carried in both arcing and nonarcing conditions and in the presence of different loads, chosen according to the UL 1699 standard…

Experimental characterization of series arc faults in AC and DC electrical circuits

2014

This paper presents an experimental characterization of the arc fault phenomenon, for both AC and DC systems, focusing the attention on series arcs. The aim of the study is to find some current characteristics, which can be significant for the purpose of arc detection. The arcing current signal is analyzed in both time and frequency domain. For the AC analysis, the test conditions are chosen in accordance with the “unwanted tripping tests” and the “operation inhibition tests” reported in the Standard UL 1699. The DC study is carried out on the currents waveforms acquired during some on-field tests on a PV plant. Starting from the study herein presented, the authors have found that is it pos…

VUV diagnostic of electron impact processes in low temperature molecular hydrogen plasma

2015

Novel methods for diagnostics of molecular hydrogen plasma processes, such as ionization, production of high vibrational levels, dissociation of molecules via excitation to singlet and triplet states and production of metastable states, are presented for molecular hydrogen plasmas in corona equilibrium. The methods are based on comparison of rate coefficients of plasma processes and optical emission spectroscopy of lowest singlet and triplet transitions, i.e. Lyman-band ($B^1\Sigma^+_u \rightarrow X^1\Sigma^+_g$) and molecular continuum ($a^3\Sigma^+_g \rightarrow b^3\Sigma^+_u$), of the hydrogen molecule in VUV wavelength range. Comparison of rate coefficients of spin-allowed and/or spin-f…

Photoelectron emission induced by low temperature hydrogen plasmas

2018

Experimental results of low temperature hydrogen plasma induced photoelectron emission measurements comparing two different plasma heating methods are summarized. By exposing the samples to the vacuum ultraviolet radiation of a filament-driven multi-cusp arc discharge ion source and a 2.45 GHz microwave-driven ion source, it has been measured that the total photoelectron emission from various metal surfaces is on the order of 1 A per kW of plasma heating power, which can be increased by a factor of 2–3.5 with a thin layer of alkali metal. The possible effects of the photoelectrons on the plasma sheath structure are studied with a 1D collisionless model extended to include the contribution o…

CNT and Graphene Growth: Growing, Quality Control, Thermal Expansion and Chiral Dispersion

2017

The chapter presents and discusses the production of graphene sheets of carbon nanotubes (CNT) of various types. The Iijima arc discharge method, following the purification methods, is described identifying advantages and disadvantages. Several types of non-regularities such as the Stone–Wales defect and corner effect, which locally increases reactivity, are described from the structural point of view. The laser ablation method is presented as one of the most prominent methods in the production of CNTs. The catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method is a very effective tool for the controlled production of different carbon shells. The sporadic and simulated growth of CNTs depends on …

Influence of the tip effect of a carbon nanostructure on low current electrical arc initiation

2009

During their setting off, circuit breakers and vacuum switch devices are accompanied by an electric arc whose physical and chemical properties are governed by emissive current sites at the cathode surface called cathode spots. Assuming the continuity of the current on the cathode surfaces, the cathode spots contribute to supply the electrical arc by electron emission and material ejection. Thus they cause erosion on the contact electrodes inducing a dysfunction of contactors. The apparition of these cathode spots is due essentially to dust particles and surface irregularities at different scales. This experimental work represents a contribution to the understanding of the electrical arc beh…

Experimental approach of the interaction between a sub-microscopic cathode tip and the plasma

2007

The interaction between electrical arc and cathode represents a crucial problem in the conception of arc jet thrusters, circuit breakers, and plasma torch or arc heaters. At the cathode surface, the current and energy transfers are controlled by the current emitting site (cathodic spot). Theories and experimental observations, at macroscopic and mesoscopic scale, deal with the erosion of the cathodic surface. Under micrometer range, theories refer to the arc root to describe the erosion of the surface. The works presented here propose an original method to evaluate the arc-cathode interaction at micrometric scale. A nanotechnology is used in order to control the roughness of the electrode s…

On-chip purification via liquid immersion of arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes

2016

Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AD-MWNT) have been proven to be of high quality, but their use is very limited due to difficulties in obtaining them in a clean and undamaged form. Here, we present a simple method that purifies raw AD-MWNT material in laboratory scale without damage, and that in principle can be scaled up. The method consists of depositing raw AD-MWNT material on a flat substrate and immersing the substrate slowly in water, whereby the surface tension force of the liquid–substrate contact line selectively sweeps away the larger amorphous carbon debris and leaves relatively clean MWNTs on the substrate. We demonstrate the utility of the method by prepa…

Individual arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes probed with multiple measurement techniques

2020

Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AD-MWNT), or related MWNTs, exhibit a good quality compared to the more common type of MWNT synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition methods. Yet experimental measurements on these are rather few and typically have not correlated data from different measurement techniques. Here, the authors report Raman spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, conductivity measurements, and force microscopy on single AD-MWNTs. The results demonstrate the high quality of AD-MWNTs and are compatible with the view of them as the best approximation of MWNTs as an assembly of defect-free concentric individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. The au…
