A mathematical model to determine the electrical energy production in photovoltaic fields under mismatch effect
2009
Among the electrical energy production systems from renewable sources, the photovoltaic one represents today one of the most efficient and technically tested choice. In this paper the authors present a mathematical model that allows the maximization of the generated power of photovoltaic (PV) plants under unequally radiation conditions. In particular, thanks to the model of a PV plant, unequally radiated, developed in Matlab-Simulink environment, in this paper the mismatch problem of PV plants is dealt with. The simulations curried out allow to assert that by putting into action re-configuration techniques of series-parallel connections of PV plants, under unequally radiation, can allow to …
Flexible power converters for the fault tolerant operation of Micro-Grids
2010
The progressive penetration level of Distributed Generation (DG) is destined to cause deep changes in the existing distribution networks no longer considered as passive terminations of the whole electrical system. A possible solution is the realization of small networks, namely the Micro-Grids, reproducing in themselves the structure of the main production and distribution of the electrical energy system. In order to gain an adequate reliability level of the microgrids the individuation and the management of the faults with the goal of maintaining the micro-grid operation (fault tolerant operation) is quite important. In the present paper flexible power converters and a companion control al…
A Renewable Energy mix to Supply the Balearic Islands: Sea Wave, Wind and Solar
2018
The paper investigates the status of the electrical energy sector in the Balearic Islands (Spain). In order to improve the energetic sustainability, this work analysis the availability of renewable energy sources, focusing the attention on sea wave, wind and solar. For the utilization of sea wave source, an innovative device is proposed.
Near zero energy islands in the Mediterranean: Supporting policies and local obstacles
2014
Abstract Based on a recent technical–economical analysis on the island of Pantelleria, a policy feasibility study for a complete upgrading of the energy system of this Mediterranean Island is carried out. Pantelleria, situated between Sicily and Africa, owns a large potential in terms of renewable energy resources, although there are some obstacles in turning it into a Near Zero Energy system. Starting from a deep energy system audit, the study proposes the project for a near zero energy island, through the efficient transformation of the different existing natural energy resources into electrical energy and heat: the solar, the wind-based and the geothermal systems. In this way, the island…
A tool for evaluating geothermal power exploitability and its application to Ischia, Southern Italy
2015
Abstract The paper proposes a method to evaluate the potential for electric power production at any site of possible geothermal interest. Accounting for geological data of the reservoirs, the method allows the computation of the available electrical power of the investigated site. Electrical energy production from geothermal sources is realized through different techniques, such as single flash and double flash, dry steam, and binary ORC plants. The technique chosen to be the most productive is determined by analyzing a specific range of geofluid properties, mainly temperature and pressure. Moreover, each plant typology has a global efficiency that may be correlated to geofluid enthalpy by …
AMYR 2: A new version of a computer program for pair potential calculation of molecular associations
1998
AMYR is a computer program for the calculation of molecular associations using Fraga's pairwise atom-atom potential. The interaction energy is evaluated through a 1R expansion. The electrostatic energy is calculated through either the one-centre-per atom or the three-centres-per atom model by Hunter and Sanders. A pairwise dispersion energy term is included in the potential and corrected by a damping function. The program carries out energy minimizations through variable metric methods. The new version allows for the stationary point analysis of the intermolecular potential by means of the Hessian eigenvalues. Although using low-gradient thresholds optimization procedures to avoid many stat…
On Energy Harvesting Using Piezoelectric Transducer with Two-Port Model Under Force Excitation
2019
Piezoelectric (PE) materials are functional materials that can be used for transforming mechanical stress into electrical energy, that can then be stored and used for powering other devices. In this paper, we provide experimental investigation of PE transducers used for energy harvesting under external force-controlled excitation. The lumped parameter electromechanical model (LPEM) has been assumed and brought into a generalized two-port network notation. Laboratory experiments using a universal test machine (UTM) were performed and used for the parameter identification of the model. The two-port model formulation is validated by comparing results of numerical simulations and experimental d…
A local chemical potential approach within the variable charge method formalism
2008
A new and computationally efficient implementation of the variable charge method of Streitz and Mintmire (1994 Phys. Rev. B 50 11996) is presented. In particular a local chemical potential approach that optimizes the charge on only those atoms expected to be ionic is developed. By doing so, the charge fluctuation problem experienced in regions far from any oxygen is solved, leading to a linear minimization problem of the electrostatic energy. In the dilute oxygen limit, such an approach can lead to at least an order of magnitude saving in computation.
Creation of Temperature Field in a Finite Cylinder by Alternated Electromagnetic Force
2004
One of the modern areas of applications developed during last years is effective use of electrical energy produced by alternating current in production of heat energy. This process is ecologically clean. The water is weakly electrically conducting medium (electrolyte). Devices based on this principle are developed during last ten years. Compared to classical devices with heating elements, new devices are more compact.
A Magnetostrictive Electric Power Generator for energy harvesting from traffic: Design and experimental verification
2015
In the last decades, the growth in energy demand, the decrease of fossil fuels available in the market and the impact of anthropogenic factors on climate change has given new impulse to research on renewable energy systems, particularly those known as energy harvesting devices (EHDs) [1]. A large number of EHDs have been proposed, using different operating principle [1-4]. Among them, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive seem to be particularly suitable for the application in EHD. In these materials the application of external mechanical stress induces a change in the level of magnetization and therefore an electromotive force (emf) can be generated and collected in order to produce electrica…
