Environmental sustainability in non-residential buildings by automating and optimization LENI index

2018

Directive 2002/91 / EC as amended by 2010/31 / EU introduces procedures for energy certification aimed to determine, through the numerical indicators, the overall energy efficiency of the buildings, but notes the thermal and electric consumption. Often, the power consumption is incorrectly underestimated, this consumption would to be considered with great attention. In fact, compared to a committed capacity of less, compared to thermal plants, have times of utilization often far higher, leading to energy requirements to levels similar or even higher than those thermal, being the conversion factor of the electrical energy increasingly high. Leaving aside the procedural scheme energy certific…

Eulerian two-fluid model of alkaline water electrolysis for hydrogen production

2020

Hydrogen storage is a promising technology for storage of renewable energy resources. Despite its high energy density potential, the development of hydrogen storage has been impeded, mainly due to its significant cost. Although its cost is governed mainly by electrical energy expense, especially for hydrogen produced with alkaline water electrolysis, it is also driven by the value of the cell tension. The most common means of electrolyzer improvement is the use of an electrocatalyst, which reduces the energy required for electrochemical reaction to take place. Another efficient means of electrolyzer improvement is to use the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-assisted design that allows the…

Anomalous Coulomb matrix elements in thef7/2shell

2003

γ decays from high-spin states in the N=Z-1 nucleus 2753Co26 have been identified for the first time. Level energies and Coulomb energy differences between these states and their analogs in its mirror nucleus 53Fe have been compared with large-scale pf shell-model calculations, which offer excellent agreement. New information has been obtained on two-proton Coulomb matrix elements needed in the interpretation. These have been extracted from the data via a number of methods and are shown to exhibit an anomalous behavior for the J=2 coupling.

Pore entrance effects on the electrical potential distribution in charged porous membranes and ion channels

2007

Abstract Models for the electrical potential distribution in the interfacial region between a fixed charge membrane and an electrolyte solution have traditionally employed the Donnan equilibrium formalism that assumes discontinuous changes in concentrations and electric potential. In the case of the charged capillary membrane model, we propose to check rigorously the validity of this approach by solving the linearized Poisson–Boltzmann equation for the diffuse electrical double layer at the membrane|solution interface. The comparison of the resulting axial distribution for the electric potential with the Donnan potential drop shows that the discontinuous approach is only valid for membrane …

Analysis of magnetohydrodynamic generator driven by thermoacoustic engine for deep Space applications

2020

This paper discusses the results of theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetohydrodynamic generator with liquid metal working body. This electric machine is used to convert mechanical energy, supplied by thermoacoustic engine, to an AC form of electrical energy. The purpose of this technology is an electricity production in deep Space, potentially suitable for long term missions far away from Sun.

A novel linear-non-linear digital control for DC/DC converters

2006

In this paper, a digitally controlled multi-module DC-DC converter with fast transient response, based on a linear-non-linear control is presented. The proposed digital control improves the stability of the system, cuts off the effects of limit-cycle and reduces the recovery time, by making the "effective" bandwidth of the system independent of the bandwidth of the linear control loop and limits, at the same time, output voltage variations. The novel digital control is AVP-compatible and halves the recovery time. Preliminary hardware tests on a single phase step-down converter are reported. The experimental results match simulation ones, obtained by modelling system with Matlab/Aldec mixed …

Deregulated Electric Energy Price Forecasting in NordPool Market using Regression Techniques

2019

Deregulated electricity market day-ahead electrical energy price forecasting is important. It is influenced by external parameters and it is a complicated function. In this work two neighboring regions in the NordPool market are analyzed to provide day-ahead electrical price forecasting using regression techniques. The characteristics of the NordPool market trading behavior leads to unanticipated price peaks at daily, weekly and annual level. The considered two Nordic regions have different energy generation sources (e.g Norway has controllable hydro power, Denmark has non-controllable wind-power) therefore day-ahead electrical energy price forecasting in deregulated market for these two ne…

Comparison of different sets of array configurations for multichannel 2D ERT acquisition

2017

Abstract Traditional electrode arrays such Wenner-Schlumberger or dipole-dipole are still widely used thanks to their well-known properties but the array configurations are generally not optimized for multi-channel resistivity measures. Synthetic datasets relating to four different arrays, dipole-dipole (DD), pole-dipole (PD), Wenner-Schlumberger (WS) and a modified version of multiple gradient (MG), have been made for a systematic comparison between 2D resistivity models and their inverted images. Different sets of array configurations generated from simple combinations of geometric parameters (potential dipole lengths and dipole separation factors) were tested with synthetic and field dat…

Energetic Sustainability Using Renewable Energies in the Mediterranean Sea

2016

The paper is focused on the analysis of the electrical energy sector in the Maltese islands, focusing on the employment of Renewable Energies in order to increase its energy independence. The main renewable source here proposed is wave energy: thanks to its strategic position, Malta will be able to generate electrical energy through the use of an innovative type of Wave Energy Converter (WEC) based on the prototype of linear generator designed and developed by the University of Palermo. This new technology will be able to cut down the electrical energy production from traditional power plants and, consequently, the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Wave energy source and off-shore photovoltai…

The Desalination Process Driven by Wave Energy: A Challenge for the Future

2016

The correlation between water and energy is currently the focus of several investigations. In particular, desalination is a technological process characterized by high energy consumption; nevertheless, desalination represents the only practicable solution in several areas, where the availability of fresh water is limited but brackish water or seawater are present. These natural resources (energy and water) are essential for each other; energy system conversion needs water, and electrical energy is necessary for water treatment or transport. Several interesting aspects include the study of saline desalination as an answer to freshwater needs and the application of renewable energy (RE) devic…
