A Learning Automaton-based Scheme for Scheduling Domestic Shiftable Loads in Smart Grids

2017

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling shiftable loads, over multiple users, in smart electrical grids. We approach the problem, which is becoming increasingly pertinent in our present energy-thirsty society, using a novel distributed game-theoretic framework. In our specific instantiation, we consider the scenario when the power system has a local-area Smart Grid subnet comprising of a single power source and multiple customers. The objective of the exercise is to tacitly control the total power consumption of the customers’ shiftable loads, so to approach the rigid power budget determined by the power source, but to simultaneously not exceed this threshold. As opposed to the…

Renewable Energy Sources in the Baltic States and New Business Approach of the Sector

2021

Renewable energy sources (RES) are efficient in meeting the demand for clean and affordable energy. The need for RES is undeniable and has many advantages but there are also some challenges that need to be taken into consideration and adapted to the energy system. One of the challenges is RES volatility and its impact on electricity prices and power system operation. Europe is trending to power system decentralisation through the involvement of local authorities, active consumers and citizens in the system operation. This article provides main information about the energy sector of Latvia and RES in the Baltic countries. It proposes a methodology for the complex analysis of correlation and …

Harmonic sources detection in power systems via nonactive power measurements according to IEEE Std. 1459–2010: Theoretical approach and ex…

2010

In this paper an enhanced decision-making strategy is presented for the detection of harmonic sources in power systems able to detect also which is the prevailing nature of the disturbance (nonlinearity or unbalance). It makes use of some simple indices, which are evaluated by means of the measurements of some nonactive power quantities, proposed by the authors and derived from the approach of the IEEE Std. 1459–2010. The decision-making rules for the proposed strategy are presented and discussed by means of simulation and experimental tests. The results obtained are presented, showing the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for the detection of the dominant harmonic source upstream or d…

Preliminary Tests On A Miniaturized Hybrid Pv-Pemfc System

2007

A regenerative hybrid PV-PEMFC low power system is a suitable solution to replace batteries and to supply small electric devices placed in remote areas with no grid connection. Such a system was designed and built including a PV array, electrolyzer, PEMFC stack (6We) and hydrogen storage tank. As well known a hybrid PV-PEMFC energy system may represent a reliable solution to the renewable energy storage problem. Hydrogen produced by such a system is a clean fuel, suitable to replace traditional fuels which contain carbon damaging the environment. The paper reports results of a preliminary, non-dynamic experimental analysis performed on the system in order to study the effects of the anode p…

Impact of RES penetration on the frequency dynamics of the 500 kV vietnamese power system

2019

The increase of renewable energy sources (RES) typically operating as converter-interfaced generation (CIG) is progressively causing a significant change of power systems operation paradigm. The reduction of the overall available kinetic energy and the consequent impact on the dynamic response of the system is a relevant issue currently under investigation in academic and industrial scopes. The work analyzes the impact of different CIG penetration in the three areas of the 500 kV Vietnamese power system, North, Center and South. The system is modified substituting conventional synchronous generation with converter-interfaced generation. The models of power converters and corresponding contr…

Inertial response of isolated power networks with wind power plants

2019

The constant increase of power generation provided by renewable energy source (RES) power plants is causing a progressive reduction of the overall inertia of the power systems. Especially in the case of small, isolated power networks, the replacement of conventional generation plants with RES power plants can affect significantly the frequency response of the system. The critical low-inertia conditions can be improved by the introduction of specific additional controls to the RES power converters. These control schemes are known as “synthetic inertia” or “virtual inertia” controls. The paper analyzes the impact of a derivative-based inertial control on a small, isolated power system, with a…

An Analysis of the Intertial Response of Small Isolated Power Systems in Presence of Generation from Renewable Energy Sources

2018

Renewable Energy Sources are posing critical issues related to the mining of power systems stability, essentially due to a decrement of the inertial response during system's contingencies. As a consequence, to preserve the security and the reliability of the system, it is necessary to adopt new frequency adjustments mechanisms. This issue becomes particularly critical in isolated power systems, like those of small islands not supplied by the main grid, in the case of high shares of production from unpredictable renewabies such as photovoitaic and wind sources. In this framework, the present work deals with the analysis of the variation of the inertia time constant of a small island in vario…

Analysis of the new submarine interconnection system between Italy and Malta: Simulation of transmission network operation

2016

In this paper, some simulations of the interconnected Sicilian and Maltese transmission systems are performed, in order to assess this new system configuration. The HVAC submarine interconnection between Italy and Malta came into operation in 2015 and is part of a European programme for transmission grid interconnection improvement. This new line has been built in order to allow a better management of the power system of both the islands. Firstly, a brief description of the interconnection system is given. Moreover, the transmission systems of Sicily and Malta are depicted and their structures are shown. The simulations are carried out by means of a model of the interconnected system create…

Primary Frequency Control in the Power System of Continental Europe including the Dynamics of the HVDC Link France-Great Britain

2020

The paper presents a study of primary frequency control within the power system of Continental Europe (CE) including the dynamics of the high voltage direct current (HVDC) link between France and Great Britain (GB). The large-scale dynamic model of the CE system originally provided by ENTSO-E is extended with a more detailed representation of the whole HVDC interconnection. The dynamics of the GB synchronous area is also considered in the analysis, implementing a system equivalent suitable for primary frequency control studies. The opportunity of frequency containment reserve exchange between the two areas through the link is also investigated, considering supplementary frequency controls w…

Characterization of Different Cable Ferrite Materials to Reduce the Electromagnetic Noise in the 2–150 kHz Frequency Range

2018

The gap of standardization for conducted and field coupled electromagnetic interferences (EMI) in the 2–150 kHz frequency range can lead to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) problems. This is caused by power systems such as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controlled rectifiers, photovoltaic inverters or charging battery units in electric vehicles. This is a very important frequency spectral due to interferences generated in a wide range of devices and, specifically, communication problems in the new technologies and devices incorporated to the traditional grid to convert it into a Smart Grid. Consequently, it is necessary to provide new solutions to attenuate this kind of interference, which…
