Wireless ECG and cardiac monitoring systems: State of the art, available commercial devices and useful electronic components

2021

Abstract Wireless ElectroCardioGram (ECG) systems are employed in manifold application fields: tele-monitoring, sport applications, support to ageing people at home, fetal ECG, wearable devices and ambulatory monitoring. The presence of cables often hinders user’s free movements, alongside clinicians’ routine operations. Therefore, wireless ECG systems are desirable. This paper aims at reviewing the solutions described in the literature, besides commercially available devices and electronic components useful to setup laboratory prototypes. Several systems have been developed, different in terms of the adopted technology; when approaching the development of a wireless ECG system, some import…

WSN Design and Verification Using On-Board Executable Specifications

2019

The gap between informal functional specifications and the resulting implementation in the chosen programming language is notably a source of errors in embedded systems design. In this paper, we discuss a methodology and a software platform aimed at coping with this issue in programming resource-constrained wireless sensor network nodes (WSNs). Whereas the typical development model for the WSNs is based on cross compilation, the proposed approach supports high-level symbolic coding of abstract models and distributed applications, as well as their test and their execution, directly on the target hardware. As a working example, we discuss the application of our methodology to specify the func…

Design of a Time Dissemination System Using Chirp Modulation for Medium Voltage Smart Grid Applications

2020

The monitoring and the management of smart grid require an advanced communication infrastructure. The time synchronization is among the most important services such an infrastructure should offer. Several solutions are available to disseminate the time information in a distributed system; for instance, most of the times a global positioning system (GPS) receiver is used to recover accurate time information. However, GPS receivers need a clear view of the sky. Other solutions, like the use of a network-based synchronization mechanism, require a dedicated communication infrastructure, which is not always feasible for economical reason. Thus, the use of the power grid itself to disseminate a t…

A Cluster based Sensor-Selection Scheme for Energy-Efficient Agriculture Sensor Networks

2021

Improving the energy-efficiency of remotely deployed sensor nodes in agriculture wireless networks is very challenging due to a lack of access to energy grid. Network clustering and limiting the amount of sensor data are among the various methods to improve the lifetime of these sensor nodes. In this work, an optimal sensor-selection scheme is proposed to improve the Quality of Service in clustered agriculture networks. the proposed method selects a limited number of sensor nodes to be active in each cluster. It considers the estimator performance while selecting limited sensor nodes for environmental monitoring. the optimal sensor-selection process considers the information of remaining en…

On Multiple AER Handshaking Channels Over High-Speed Bit-Serial Bidirectional LVDS Links With Flow-Control and Clock-Correction on Commercial FPGAs f…

2017

Address event representation (AER) is a widely employed asynchronous technique for interchanging “neural spikes” between different hardware elements in neuromorphic systems. Each neuron or cell in a chip or a system is assigned an address (or ID), which is typically communicated through a high-speed digital bus, thus time-multiplexing a high number of neural connections. Conventional AER links use parallel physical wires together with a pair of handshaking signals (request and acknowledge). In this paper, we present a fully serial implementation using bidirectional SATA connectors with a pair of low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) wires for each direction. The proposed implementation …

A stepwise power tariff model with game theory based on Monte-Carlo simulation and its applications for household, agricultural, commercial and indus…

2019

Abstract The concept of game theory has been adapted in the regulation of retail electricity market within the constraints of stepwise power tariff (SPT) for economic energy consumption. The objective is to increase the penetration level of renewable energy sources (RES) and electric vehicles with implementation of Bayesian game model for categorized (i.e. household, agricultural, commercial & industrial) consumers. Bayesian game model is based on degree of information shared by consumers due to their selfish nature. The main goal is to create an algorithm using constraints RES, storage through electric vehicles, electric wiring, number of consumer, efficient equipment, social status of fam…

A Trajectory-Driven SIMO mm-Wave Channel Model for a Moving Point Scatterer

2021

In this paper, we propose a trajectory-based three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary channel model for a millimeter wave (mm-Wave) single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system. The proposed channel model is designed to capture the mobility of a moving point scatterer in an indoor environment. We derive the expression of the time-variant (TV) channel transfer function (CTF). We study the TV Doppler characteristics of the channel, such as the TV Doppler power spectrum and the TV mean Doppler shift. To validate the proposed channel model, we performed a measurement campaign in an indoor environment using a software defined radar operating at 24 GHz. As a moving object, we consider a single swingin…

Smart Manufacturing Testbed for the Advancement of Wireless Adoption in the Factory

2020

Wireless communication is a key enabling technology central to the advancement of the goals of the Industry 4.0 smart manufacturing concept. Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology are constructing a testbed to aid in the adoption of wireless technology within the factory workcell and other harsh industrial radio environments. In this paper the authors present a new industrial wireless testbed design that motivates academic research and is relevant to the needs of industry. The testbed is designed to serve as both a demonstration and research platform for the wireless workcell. The work leverages lessons learned from past testbed incarnations that included a dual r…

Autonomous Demand Side Management of Electric Vehicles in a Distribution Grid

2019

The electricity demand due to the increasing number of EVs presents new challenges for the operation of the electricity network, especially for the distribution grids. The existing grid infrastructure may not be sufficient to meet the new demands imposed by the integration of EVs. Thus, EV charging may possibly lead to reliability and stability issues, especially during the peak demand periods. Demand side management (DSM) is a potential and promising approach for mitigation of the resulting impacts. In this work, we developed an autonomous DSM strategy for optimal charging of EVs to minimize the charging cost and we conducted a simulation study to evaluate the impacts to the grid operation…
