On the Stiffness and the Reinforcement Effect of Electrical Resistance Strain Gauges

2006

The reinforcement effect of a strain gauge installed on low modulus materials can be significant. The increasing use of low modulus materials requires therefore the evaluation of such effect. This paper concerns the relationship between the local reinforcement effect and the strain gauge stiffness. The conclusion is that the gauge stiffness alone does not allow the user a thorough evaluation of the reinforcement effect.

Size Dependent Breakdown of Superconductivity in Ultranarrow Nanowires

2005

Below a certain temperature Tc (typically cryogenic), some materials lose their electric resistance R entering a superconducting state. Folowing the general trend toward a large scale integration of a greater number of electronic components, it is desirable to use superconducting elements in order to minimize heat dissipation. It is expected that the basic property of a superconductor, i.e. dissipationless electric current, will be preserved at reduced scales required by modern nanoelectronics. Unfortunately, there are indications that for a certain critical size limit of the order of 10 nm, below which a "superconducting" wire is no longer a superconductor in a sense that it acquires a fin…

Strain Sensing Coatings for Large Composite Structures Based on 2D MXene Nanoparticles

2021

Real-time strain monitoring of large composite structures such as wind turbine blades requires scalable, easily processable and lightweight sensors. In this study, a new type of strain-sensing coating based on 2D MXene nanoparticles was developed. A Ti3C2Tz MXene was prepared from Ti3AlC2 MAX phase using hydrochloric acid and lithium fluoride etching. Epoxy and glass fibre–reinforced composites were spray-coated using an MXene water solution. The morphology of the MXenes and the roughness of the substrate were characterised using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. MXene coatings were first investigated under various ambient conditions. The coating experienced no sign…

Electropolymerization of non-substituted Mg(II) porphine: Effects of proton acceptor addition

2015

Abstract Electropolymerization of unsubstituted magnesium porphine in acetonitrile solutions possessing various proton-accepting properties has been studied. The overall rate of the polymer-product accumulation on the electrode surface has been established to be limited by the deprotonation step of intermediate species. This conclusion is based on the observed influence of proton-accepting additives, water or 2,6-dimethylpyridine (lutidine), on the Mg-porphine electrooxidation process. Lutidine addition into the polymerization bath enables one to enhance strongly the rate of the film growth and the efficiency of this process increases more than by a factor of two, redox, electric conductivi…

Structural, vibrational and electronic properties in the glass-crystal transition of thin films Sb70Te30 doped with Sn

2020

Abstract Antimony-telluride based phase-change materials doped with Sn have been proposed to be ideal materials for improving the performance of phase-change memories. It is well known that Sb70Te30 thin films show a sharp fall in the electrical resistance in a narrow temperature range when heating. Therefore, it is interesting to study the effect of adding Sn into this composition. In this work, undoped and Sn-doped Sb–Te thin films of composition Snx[Sb0.70Te0.30]100-x, with x = 0.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 at. %, have been obtained by pulsed laser deposition. Their electrical resistance has been measured while heating from room temperature to 650 K. A sharp fall in the electrical resistance, as…

Electrical conductance of carbon nanotubes with misaligned ends

2013

During a manufacturing process, when a straight carbon nanotube is placed on a substrate, e.g., production of transistors, its two ends are often misaligned. In this study, we investigate the effects of multiwall carbon nanotubes’ (MWCNTs) outer diameter and chirality on the change in conductance due to misalignment of the two ends. The length of the studied MWCNTs was 120 nm, while the diameters ranged between 4 and 7 nm. A mixed finite element-tight-binding approach was carefully designed to realize reduction in computational time by orders of magnitude in calculating the deformation-induced changes in the electrical transport properties of the nanotubes. Numerical results suggest that ar…

Effect of Organic Tin Compounds on Electric Properties of Model Membranes

2006

The objective of the present work was to investigate the effect of selected organic tin compounds and potassium chloride (used as a reference substance) on the trans-membrane electric voltage and electric resistance of model membranes, the latter being nitrocellulose filters impregnated with butylene ester of lauric acid. The increasing KCl concentration (in the measurement chambers) caused a rapid rise of the negative trans-membrane voltage, whose value stabilized afterwards. In the case of (C3H7)3SnCl an abrupt maximum of the negative voltage was observed followed by a monotonic drop to zero. In the case of highest concentrations of this compound the voltages, after having reached zero, c…

Spin switching in electronic devices based on 2D assemblies of spin-crossover nanoparticles

2015

In this communication we study the transport properties of two-dimensional assemblies of [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) spin-crossover nanoparticles (NPs) with two different morphologies. The NPs have been synthesized made in a similar manner than in our previous study in which single NPs were measured. We prepared free-standing self-assembled monolayer sheets of both SCO NPs formed at the air/liquid interface on holey carbon TEM grids to extract their global arrangement and NP size distributions by STEM-HAADF technique. The SCO NP systems present a rod-like shape and possess two different volumes, corresponding to lengths of 25 nm and 44 nm along the rod direction and average diameters of 10 nm and…

Assessment on the use of the amorphous semiconductor theory for the analysis of oxide films

2015

Abstract Although the theory of Schottky barrier in amorphous semiconductors is generally accepted, the limits of validity of such theory have not yet been explored. The classic semi-analytical solution is obtained under the constraint of constant electronic density of states (DOS) distribution in the mobility gap. In order to take into account the presence of a DOS variable in energy, a semi-empirical corrective power law was introduced in this paper. It is shown that the equations derived for thick films maintain their validity also in the case of thin films, provided that the space charge region width remains lower than 70% of the whole film thickness. A new expression based on the use o…

Primary thermometry with nanoscale tunnel junctions

1995

We have found current-voltage (I-V) and conductance (dI/dV) characteristics of arrays of nanoscale tunnel junctions between normal metal electrodes to exhibit suitable features for primary thermometry. The current through a uniform array depends on the ratio of the thermal energy kBT and the electrostatic charging energy E c of the islands between the junctions and is completely blocked by Coulomb repulsion at T = 0 and at small voltages eV/2 ≤ Ec. In the opposite limit, kBT ≫ Ec, the width of the conductance minimum scales linearly and universally with T and N, the number of tunnel junctions, and qualifies as a primary thermometer. The zero bias drop in the conductance is proportional to T…
