Diffusion of ionic and non-ionic contrast agents in articular cartilage with increased cross-linking--contribution of steric and electrostatic effect…

2013

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of threose-induced collagen cross-linking on diffusion of ionic and non-ionic contrast agents in articular cartilage. Design Osteochondral plugs (O=6mm) were prepared from bovine patellae and divided into two groups according to the contrast agent to be used in contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) imaging: (I) anionic ioxaglate and (II) non-ionic iodixanol. The groups I and II contained 7 and 6 sample pairs, respectively. One of the paired samples served as a reference while the other was treated with threose to induce collagen cross-linking. The equilibrium partitioning of the contrast agents was imaged after 24h of immersion. Fixed char…

Electrostatic Contribution to the Surface Pressure of Charged Monolayers Containing Polyphosphoinositides

2008

Structural and functional studies of lateral heterogeneity in biological membranes have underlined the importance of membrane organization in biological function. Most inquiries have focused on steric determinants of membrane organization, such as headgroup size and acyl-chain saturation. This manuscript reports a combination of theory and experiment that shows significant electrostatic contributions to surface pressures in monolayers of phospholipids where the charge spacing is smaller than the Bjerrum length. For molecules with steric cross sections typical of phospholipids in the cell membrane (approximately 50 A(2)), only polyphosphoinositides achieve this threshold. The most abundant s…

Energy interactions in amyloid-like fibrils from NNQQNY.

2014

We use large-scale MP2 calculations to analyze the interactions appearing in amyloid fibers, which are difficult to determine experimentally. To this end, dimers and trimers of the hexapeptide NNQQNY from the yeast prion-like protein Sup35 were considered as model systems. We studied the energy interactions present in the three levels of organization in which the formation of amyloid fibrils is structured. The structural changes in the hydrogen bonds were studied too. It was found that the most energetic process is the formation of the β-sheet, which is equally due to both hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions. The aromatic rings help stabilize these aggregates through stacking of t…

Improvement of charge-transfer indices for multifunctional amino acids: Application to lysozyme

2008

Valence topological Charge-Transfer (CT) indices are applied to the calculation of pH at the isoelectric point (pI). The model is generalized for molecules with heteroatoms. The ability of the indices for the description of molecular charge distribution is established by comparing them with the pI of 21 amino acids. Linear correlation models are obtained. The CT indices improve multivariable regression equations for pI. The variance decreases by 95%. No superimposition of the corresponding G(k)-J(k) and G(k)(V)-J(k)(V) pairs is observed in most fits, which diminishes the risk of collinearity. The inclusion of heteroatoms in pi-electron system is beneficial for the description of pI, the bec…

A validated energy model of a solar dish-Stirling system considering the cleanliness of mirrors

2020

Solar systems based on the coupling of parabolic concentrating collectors and thermal engines (i.e. dish-Stirling systems) are among the most efficient generators of solar power currently available. This study focuses on the modelling of functioning data from a 32 kWe dish-Stirling solar plant installed at a facility test site on the University of Palermo campus, in Southern Italy. The proposed model, based on real monitored data, the energy balance of the collector and the partial load efficiency of the Stirling engine, can be used easily to simulate the annual energy production of such systems, making use of the solar radiation database, with the aim of encouraging a greater commercialisa…

Realization of an Energetic Hub Based on a High-Performance Dish Stirling Plant

2018

In this work the realization of an energetic hub based on a high-performances dish Stirling system, at the DEIM of the University of Palermo, is presented. The realized system is the first top rated solar thermodynamic plant directly connected to the national electric grid. The connection permits the electricity injection into the grid and allows to access to national renewable energy incentives regime. The system realization was possible thanks to an international cooperation between the University of Palermo and the private company Horizon S.r.l., official partner of Ripasso Energy AB, owner of this technology. Initial data of the plant energy production and the foreseen improvements for …

A methodology for optimisation of solar dish-Stirling systems size, based on the local frequency distribution of direct normal irradiance

2021

Abstract In geographical areas where direct solar irradiation levels are relatively high, concentrated solar energy systems are one of the most promising green energy technologies. Dish-Stirling systems are those that achieve the highest levels of solar-to-electric conversion efficiency, and yet they are still among the least common commercially available technologies. This paper focuses on a strategy aimed at promoting greater diffusion of dish-Stirling systems, which involves optimizing the size of the collector aperture area based on the hourly frequency distributions of beam irradiance and defining a new incentive scheme with a feed-in tariff that is variable with the installed costs of…

Dynamic Demand and Mean-Field Games

2017

Within the realm of smart buildings and smart cities,\ud dynamic response management is playing an ever-increasing\ud role thus attracting the attention of scientists from different\ud disciplines. Dynamic demand response management involves a\ud set of operations aiming at decentralizing the control of loads\ud in large and complex power networks. Each single appliance\ud is fully responsive and readjusts its energy demand to the\ud overall network load. A main issue is related to mains frequency\ud oscillations resulting from an unbalance between supply and\ud demand. In a nutshell, this paper contributes to the topic by\ud equipping each signal consumer with strategic insight. In particu…

Modeling of trapped charge effects in ferroelectrics: application to piezoactuators

1997

The strain response of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric multilayer actuators have been measured up to 10 7 N/m 2 stress and the 3.10 6 V/m periodic unipolar driving voltage. An additional nonstationary strain component is detected. This effect is explained in terms of a simple solution of polarization kinetics specific for unipolar driving voltage. Preliminary experimentally assertions are given for space charge effects which manifest itself in the strain as well as charge plot after removing the mechanical load. It demonstrates that the static load free equilibrium of the actuator is not complete and the charge recently supported by the piezo voltage and then trapped forms a nonunifor…

STRONTIUM CONCENTRATION DEPENDENCE OF SELECTED STRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYCRYSTALLINE Ba1−XSrXTiO3

2009

ABSTRACT Microstructure and material constants such as Young modulus E, shear modulus G, Poisson ratioν of polycrystalline ferroelectric materials Ba1-xSrxTiO3 for 0≤x≤0.4 were investigated to determine their dependence on strontium concentration. The performed investigations showed that the material is chemically homogeneous. It was found that the strontium concentration had no significant influence on the grain size. The highest value of Young's modulus is observed for Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 sample. The performed investigations of mechanical properties made it possible to evaluate the usability of this material for manufacturing transducers and sensors which could work under load.
