Experiments with Exotic Atoms and Exotic Nuclei at GSI, Recent Developments and Future Prospects

2004

Results and new developments with exotic atoms and exotic nuclei are presented from recent experiments at GSI. The proposed European inflight facility at GSI will open up new fields of outstanding research and will simultaneously access unknown regions of nuclei with new properties. A new generation of precision experiments will be performed with stored exotic nuclei, whereby nuclear reactions with an internal target and electron scattering in a small electron-ion collider will be a great challenge.

Measurement of magnetic monopole transition in electron scattering fromO16as direct test of dispersive effects

1991

For the first time an experiment has been performed to measure a magnetic monopole transition in inelastic electron scattering. In {sup 16}O the 0{sup +}{r arrow}0{sup {minus}} transition to the level at {ital E}{sub {ital x}}=10.957 MeV has been observed with a cross section of {ital d}{sigma}/{ital d}{Omega}=(5.4{plus minus}3.8){times}10{sup {minus}37} cm{sup {minus}2}/sr. Measurement of this transition is a direct signature of two-step contributions in electron scattering. Our measurement is in good agreement with the strength calculated for this transition.

Probing new neutral gauge bosons with CEvNS and neutrino-electron scattering

2020

The potential for probing extra neutral gauge boson mediators ($Z^\prime$) from low-energy measurements is comprehensively explored. Our study mainly focuses on $Z^\prime$ mediators present in string-inspired $E_6$ models and left-right symmetry. We estimate the sensitivities of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) and neutrino-electron scattering experiments. Our results indicate that such low-energy high-intensity measurements can provide a valuable probe, complementary to high-energy collider searches and electroweak precision measurements.

Towards a combined analysis of inclusive/exclusive electroproduction

2019

In view of the major advances achieved by the CLAS experiments in studying the N* electroexcitation amplitudes, as well as further extension of these studies in the experiments with CLAS12, we present an approach for the evaluation of the resonant contributions to inclusive electron scattering off protons. For the first time, the resonant contributions are determined from the experimental results on N* electrocouplings available from the data analyses of exclusive meson electroproduction off protons. This is a useful benchmark for future endeavours on understanding the transition region between low and high-energy regions, strongly related to tests on quark-hadron duality.

Lepton Universality Test in the Photoproduction ofe−e+Versusμ−μ+Pairs on a Proton Target

2015

In view of the significantly different proton charge radius extracted from muonic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements as compared to electronic hydrogen spectroscopy or electron-scattering experiments, we study in this Letter the photoproduction of a lepton pair on a proton target in the limit of very small momentum transfer as a way to provide a test of the lepton universality when extracting the proton charge form factor. By detecting the recoiling proton in the γp→l^{-}l^{+}p reaction, we show that a measurement of a ratio of e^{-}e^{+}+μ^{-}μ^{+} over e^{-}e^{+} cross sections with an absolute precision of 7×10^{-4} would allow for a test to distinguish, at the 3σ level, between the two di…

Nucleon resonance contributions to unpolarised inclusive electron scattering

2019

The first CLAS12 experiments will provide high-precision data on inclusive electron scattering observables at a photon virtuality Q2 ranging from 0.05 to 12GeV2 and center-of-mass energies W up to 4 GeV. In view of this endeavor, we present the modeling of the resonant contributions to the inclusive electron scattering observables. As input, we use the existing CLAS electrocoupling results obtained from exclusive meson electroproduction data off protons, and evaluate for the first time the resonant contributions based on the experimental results on the nucleon resonance electroexcitation. The uncertainties are given by the data and duly propagated through a Monte Carlo approach. In this way…

Low-energy doubly virtual Compton scattering from dilepton electroproduction on a nucleon

2020

We propose a new way to experimentally determine the subleading low-energy structure constant of doubly virtual Compton scattering on a proton. Such empirical determination will reduce the theoretical model error in estimates of the hadronic correction to the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift. We demonstrate that the dilepton forward-backward asymmetry in the e−p→e−pe−e+ process, which can be accessed at electron scattering facilities, yields a large sensitivity to this so far unknown low-energy constant.

Kaon Tagging at 0° Scattering Angle for High-Resolution Decay-Pion Spectroscopy

2014

At the Mainz Microtron hypernuclei can be studied by (e,e'K) reactions. By detecting the kaon which is emitted in forward direction, with the KAOS spectrometer placed at 0 scattering angle, reactions involving open strangeness production are tagged. High-resolution magnetic spectrometers are then used to coincidentally detect the mono- energetic decay-pions from mesonic two-body weak decays of light hypernuclei at rest. As a pioneering experiment has confirmed, the KAOS spectrometer is exposed to a large flux of background particles, mostly positrons from bremsstrahlung pair production. In order to increase the e ciency of kaon identification the KAOS spectrometer was modi- fied to suppress…
