The mechanisms that underpin the varied spatial genetic structures exhibited by free-living marine microorganisms remain controversial, with most studies emphasizing a high dispersal capability that should redistribute genetic diversity in contrast to most macroorganisms whose populations often retain a genetic signature of demographic response to historic climate fluctuations. Fascioliasis transmission by Lymnaea neotropica confirmed by nuclear rDNA and mtDNA sequencing in Argentina

Fascioliasis is widespread in livestock in Argentina. Among activities included in a long-term initiative to ascertain which are the fascioliasis areas of most concern, studies were performed in a recreational farm, including liver fluke infection in different domestic animal species, classification of the lymnaeid vector and verification of natural transmission of fascioliasis by identification of the intramolluscan trematode larval stages found in naturally infected snails. Phylogeny of the genus Kluyveromyces inferred from the mitochondrial cytochrome-c oxidase II gene.

A phylogenetic analysis of 17 species belonging to the genus Kluyveromyces and 12 reference and outgroup species was performed using mitochondrial cytochrome-c oxidase II gene sequences. The genus Kluyveromyces appears as a polyphyletic taxon formed by species included within the following four main groups. The Kluyveromyces phaffii group encompasses the species Kluyveromyces blattae, K. phaffii and Kluyveromyces yarrowii. The oxidized state of rusticyanin, the blue copper protein with the highest redox potential in its class, has been investigated through (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance applied to its cobalt(II) derivative. The assignment of the protons belonging to the coordinated residues has been performed. Fumarate respiration of Wolinella succinogenes: enzymology, energetics and coupling mechanism.

Wolinella succinogenes performs oxidative phosphorylation with fumarate instead of O2 as terminal electron acceptor and H2 or formate as electron donors. Fumarate reduction by these donors ('fumarate respiration') is catalyzed by an electron transport chain in the bacterial membrane, and is coupled to the generation of an electrochemical proton potential (Deltap) across the bacterial membrane. The experimental evidence concerning the electron transport and its coupling to Deltap generation is reviewed in this article. The promoter region and transcriptional regulation of the nuoA-N gene locus encoding the proton-translocating NADH:quinone oxidoreductase was analysed. A 560 bp intergenic region upstream of the nuo locus was followed by a gene (designated lrhA for LysR homologue A) coding for a gene regulator similar to those of the LysR family. Disruption of lrhA did not affect growth (respiratory or non-respiratory) or expression of nuo significantly. Dynamics of closure of zinc bis-porphyrin molecular tweezers with copper(II) ions and electron transfer.

Zinc bis-porphyrin molecular tweezers composed of a N(4) spacer bound through pyridyl units to the meso position of porphyrins were synthesized, and the tweezers are closed by the coordination of a copper(II) ion inside the spacer ligand. O2 as the regulatory signal for FNR-dependent gene regulation in Escherichia coli

With an oxystat, changes in the pattern of expression of FNR-dependent genes from Escherichia coli were studied as a function of the O2 tension (pO2) in the medium. Expression of all four tested genes was decreased by increasing O2. However, the pO2 values that gave rise to half-maximal repression (pO(0.5)) were dependent on the particular promoter and varied between 1 and 5 millibars (1 bar = 10(5) Pa). The pO(0.5) value for the ArcA-regulated succinate dehydrogenase genes was in the same range (pO(0.5) = 4.6 millibars). At these pO2 values, the cytoplasm can be calculated to be well supplied with O2 by diffusion. Therefore, intracellular O2 could provide the signal to FNR, suggesting that…
