Shell structure beyond the proton drip line studied via proton emission from deformed 141Ho

2008

Abstract Fine structure in proton emission from the 7 / 2 − [ 523 ] ground state and from the 1 / 2 + [ 411 ] isomer in deformed nucleus 141Ho was studied by means of fusion-evaporation reactions and digital signal processing. Proton transitions to the first excited 2+ state in 140Dy, with the branching ratio of I p g s ( 2 + ) = 0.9 ± 0.2 % and I p m ( 2 + ) = 1.7 ± 0.5 % , were observed. The data are analyzed within the non-adiabatic weak coupling model assuming a large quadrupole deformation of the daughter nucleus 140Dy as predicted by the self-consistent theory. Implications of this result on coexistence effects around N = 74 are discussed. Significant modifications of the proton shell…

Search for a new light gauge boson in decays of π0 and η

1994

Abstract We have searched for new light gauge bosons produced in π 0 and η decays by studying the kinematically well-constrained reactions p p→π 0 π 0 π 0 and p p→π 0 π 0 η , where one π 0 or the η decays through the emission of a single photon recoiling against a missing state X (where X is a long-lived weakly interacting particle or X →ν ν ). No signal has been observed and branching ratio upper limits of 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. have been obtained for masses of the gauge boson lying between ∼65 MeV and 125 MeV ( π 0 decay), and 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. for X masses between ∼200 MeV and 525 MeV (η decay). The π 0 -decay limit represents a factor of 4 to 8 improvement when compared to the existi…

Medium-spin levels in the N=83 nucleus147Gd

1983

Levels of theN=83 nucleus147Gd have been investigated by methods of in-beamγ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy using the147Sm(3He, 3n) and144Sm(α, n) reactions. Sixteen new low- and medium-spin levels have been observed in147Gd. We have located six members of thevf7/2×3− particle-octupole septuplet and several neutron single-particle states in147Gd. The levels of147Gd are discussed on the basis of the spherical shell model.

The decay of 31 sec98Zr, 2.9 sec98Nb and 51 min98Nb

1976

TheΒ- andγ-radiations of98Zr and98m, g Nb have been investigated employing scintillation and semiconductor spectrometers and coincidence techniques. Sources of98Nb were produced by the98Mo(n, p)98Nb reaction, sources of98Zr by fission of235U with thermal neutrons applying chemical separations. For98Zr, a half-life of 30.7±0.4 sec and aQ β-value of 2.3±0.2 MeV were obtained, for the98Nb isomers, half-lives of 2.86±0.06 sec and 51.3±0.4 min, andQ β-values of 4.8±0.2 MeV and 4.5±0.2 MeV, respectively. Noγ-rays were observed in the decay of98Zr. The decay of 2.9 sec98Nb was found to involve 11γ-ray transitions. In the decay of 51 min98Nb, 54γ-transitions were detected. Spin and parity of 1+ and…

Search for a neutral Higgs particle in the decay sequence $K^{0}_{L} \to \pi^{0}H^{0}$ and $H^{0} \to e^{+}e^{-}$

1990

Abstract We have searched for the sequence of decays K L 0 → π 0 H 0 and H 0 →e + e − at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), and have allowed for a non-zero H 0 lifetime. Three candidates have been seen, consistent with an expected background of 3.3. Limits on the branching ratio product in the range 10 −8 –10 −7 are presented as a function of the mass and lifetime of the H 0 . These can be used to restrict the neutral Higgs of the minimal standard model.

Duality relation between radiation thermodynamics and cosmic string loop thermodynamics

2011

We discuss thermodynamics of electromagnetic radiation, with p=(1/3){rho} and S{proportional_to}T{sup 3}V, and of cosmic string loops, with p=-(1/3){rho} and S{proportional_to}T{sup -3}V, where p stands for pressure, T temperature, {rho} energy density, S entropy, and V volume. We write the thermodynamic formalisms under a common framework that illustrates their formal relationship and allows us to go from one to the other through a smooth transformation. From a microscopic perspective, these relations arise from the energy relations u({lambda})=hc/{lambda} for the photons of electromagnetic radiation, and u(l)=(c{sup 4}/a{sup 2}G)l for cosmic string loops, a being a numerical (dimensionles…

Measurement oftt¯production in theτ+jetstopology usingpp¯collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2010

We present a measurement of the t (t) over bar production cross section multiplied by the branching ratio to tau lepton decaying semihadronically (tau(h)) plus jets, sigma(p (p) over bar -> t (t) over bar + X) center dot BR(t (t) over bar -> tau(h) + jets), at a center of mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV using 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. Assuming a top quark mass of 170 GeV, we measure sigma(t (t) over bar) center dot BR tau h (+ j) = 0.60(-0.22)(+0.23)(stat)(-0.14)(+0.15)(syst) +/- 0.04(lumi) pb. In addition, we extract the t (t) over bar production cross section using the t (t) over bar -> tau(h) + jets topology, with the result sigma(t (t) over bar) = 6…

Status and Prospects of Top-Quark Physics

2009

The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large mass of about 173 GeV/c^2 makes the top quark act differently than other elementary fermions, as it decays before it hadronises, passing its spin information on to its decay products. In addition, the top quark plays an important role in higher-order loop corrections to standard model processes, which makes the top quark mass a crucial parameter for precision tests of the electroweak theory. The top quark is also a powerful probe for new phenomena beyond the standard model. During the time of discovery at the Tevatron in 1995 only a few properties of the top quark could be measured. In recent years, since the star…

Low-lying levels in the nuclei151Nd and155Sm

1984

Decay properties of excited states in the151Nd and155Sm nuclei produced by 10 MeV douterons have been investigated with in-beam gamma-gamma-coincidence equipment during bombardment of the150Nd and154Sm targets. The results largely confirm the data obtained earlier for these nuclei. The (d, p γ) reaction channel favors population of odd-parity low-spin levels, whose energies follow the rule of regular band structure for well-deformed nuclei. The level schemes are interpreted with calculations using an axial particle-rotor model with a Woods-Saxon potential.

Properties of isomeric states and the ?d 3/2-vi 13/2 multiplet in194Au

1977

The level structure of194Au has been studied by observing prompt and delayedγ-rays following194Pt(p,n) and195Pt(p,2n) reactions. The conversion electron andγ-ray spectra from the decay of the 0.42s (10−) and 0.60s (5+) isomers at 476 keV and 107.4 keV, respectively, have been measured using the He-jet method. The half-lives of the 6+ (278.2 keV, 1.1±0.4 ns), 7+ (224.6 keV, 2.6±0.2 ns) and 8+ (406.8 keV, 2.9±0.4 ns) members of theπd3/2-vi13/2 multiplet have been obtained from the time distributions between cyclotron beam pulses andγ-rays depopulating these levels. A calculation made assuming a pure two-particle configuration for the multiplet predicts very well theB(E2) values for the transi…
