Jyväskylän yliopiston kielipolitiikka ja kielipolitiikan diskurssit
2017
Isolation and characterization of nuclear microsatellite loci in the northern shrimp, Pandalus borealis
2012
Published version of an article published in the journal: Conservation Genetics Resources. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12686-011-9486-4 We developed and characterized 20 microsatellite primer loci for the northern shrimp Pandalus borealis. All 20 loci were polymorphic with number of alleles ranging from 3 to 36 and with observed heterozygosity between 0.04 and 0.93. In addition, we tested the utility of these markers in three related shrimp species, P. montagui, Atlantopandalus propinqvus and Dichelopandalus bonnieri. These new markers will prove useful in the identification of stock structure and hence, assessment of the commercially important species P…
A new perspective on adolescent athletes’ transition into upper secondary school : A longitudinal mixed methods study protocol
2016
The challenge of combining elite sport and education into a dual career pathway remains to be a source of concern for many high-performance athletes. Previous research findings suggest that committed participation in both domains is highly demanding and success in one pursuit often comes at the expense of the other. There are emergent studies, however, that argue for the beneficial and complementary nature of dual career pathways. Consequently, we emphasize the importance of understanding the processes underlying differences in the development of athletes’ life trajectories. This article presents a study protocol to explore new methodological and analytical approaches that may extend curren…
What makes a champion? : motorcycle world champions' recipe for success
2011
This thesis explores what are the factors that impact the success in motorcycle racing. The subject is relevant to investigate since there have not been many scientific researches of motorcycle sport and the factors behind the success. Fifty-four motorcycle World Champions from 16 different countries and representatives of the six most successful motorcycle sport countries answer to the research question: “What makes a champion in motorcycle sport?” It is also investigated how the society influences the success in motorcycle sport and how the federations and clubs could improve their training programmes. The empirical data was collected by interviewing the experts in the field of elite-leve…
Narrative Tensions in Strained Junior Elite Performers’ Experiences of Becoming Elite Performers
2021
Contextualized within narrative theory and the field of talent identification and development systems (TIDS), this interview study examined strained junior elite performers’ experiences of becoming elite performers while participating in prestigious national TIDS. The study explored how junior elite performers perceive and negotiate their personal narratives of becoming within a cultural master narrative of being. The focus is on how the quality of person-environment interaction, characterized by narrative alignment or tensions, relates to perceptions of identity, agency, and physical and mental health. We purposefully recruited eight participants (Mage = 17.31, SD = 0.9) from a previously …
“I want to do well for myself as well!” : Constructing coaching careers in elite women’s football
2019
There is a limited understanding of career development of sport coaches, especially from the subjective perspective focused on personal meaning and evaluation of this life project in sport. We drew on career construction theory and narrative methodology to explore football coaches’ career development, adaptability resources, and the meanings they assigned to their journeys. Ten women’s football (soccer) coaches (2 women) aged 23-60 in England took part in narrative interviews which we analysed using thematic narrative analysis. Our analysis indicated that early immersion into the football narrative context most often resulted in low career exploration and a strong commitment to coaching as …
Gradient and Lipschitz Estimates for Tug-of-War Type Games
2021
We define a random step size tug-of-war game and show that the gradient of a value function exists almost everywhere. We also prove that the gradients of value functions are uniformly bounded and converge weakly to the gradient of the corresponding $p$-harmonic function. Moreover, we establish an improved Lipschitz estimate when boundary values are close to a plane. Such estimates are known to play a key role in the higher regularity theory of partial differential equations. The proofs are based on cancellation and coupling methods as well as an improved version of the cylinder walk argument. peerReviewed
On the local and global regularity of tug-of-war games
2018
This thesis studies local and global regularity properties of a stochastic two-player zero-sum game called tug-of-war. In particular, we study value functions of the game locally as well as globally, that is, close to the boundaries of the game domains. Furthermore, we formulate a continuous time stochastic differential game and discuss, among other things, the equicontinuity of the families of value functions. The main motivation is to understand the properties of the games on their own right. As applications, we obtain an existence and a regularity result for a nonlinear elliptic p-Laplace type partial differential equation and a characterization of the solution to a parabolic p-Laplace typ…
Asymptotic $C^{1,γ}$-regularity for value functions to uniformly elliptic dynamic programming principles
2022
In this paper we prove an asymptotic C1,γ-estimate for value functions of stochastic processes related to uniformly elliptic dynamic programming principles. As an application, this allows us to pass to the limit with a discrete gradient and then to obtain a C1,γ-result for the corresponding limit PDE. peerReviewed
Asymptotic Lipschitz regularity for tug-of-war games with varying probabilities
2018
We prove an asymptotic Lipschitz estimate for value functions of tug-of-war games with varying probabilities defined in $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n$. The method of the proof is based on a game-theoretic idea to estimate the value of a related game defined in $\Omega\times \Omega$ via couplings.
