Revisiting the role of embedding in Systemic Functional Linguistics : Construing depth in “big texts”

This paper is concerned with exploring the role of embedded genres in expanding the meaning potential of long texts, focusing especially on complex tertiary assignments. A significant body of work has evolved in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on modelling “big texts” as macrogenres since Martin (1994: 29) posed the question how texts “get bigger than a page”. However, based on detailed genre analyses of high-scoring undergraduate business country reports, this paper illustrates that not all big texts are macrogenres made up of elemental genre complexes. Romanikielen elvyttäminen edellyttää uskoa demokratiaan

Romanikieli on mainittu Unescon maailman uhanalaisten kielten luettelossa. Romanien lukumääräksi on maailmanlaajuisesti arvioitu noin 20 miljoonaa, joista romanikieltä puhuu noin 10 miljoonaa ihmistä. Kieltä ei kuitenkaan opeteta kouluissa kovinkaan monessa maassa. Se siirtyy pääasiassa puhuttuna äidinkielenä vanhemmilta lapsille – tai jää siirtymättä, jolloin on vaarassa, että sen osaaminen katoaa. Romanikielen elvyttäminen vaatii konkreettisia toimenpiteitä, yhteistyötä ja uskoa demokraattiseen ajattelutapaan sekä asenteeseen. Demokratia voi hyvin tai huonosti kielen varassa. Monet demokratiaa rapauttavat ilmiöt rikkovat vuorovaikutusta, jota tuotetaan kielellä. Silti kieli- ja demokratiataitojen edistäminen kulkee erillisiä polkuja, erillisten asiantuntijoiden puheissa, harvoin toisiaan koskettavissa keskusteluissa. Artikkelissamme tarkastelemme kielen keskeistä merkitystä demokratiakasvatuksessa. Lähtökohdaksi otamme osallisuutta ja demokratiaa murtavat ilmiöt, kuten polarisoituneen keskustelukulttuurin, ja rakennamme niistä siltaa vuorovaikutustaitojen kautta kielikasvatukseen ja kielitietoisuuteen. nonPeerReviewed

Antecedentes: La neuritis óptica retrobulbar (NO) es un proceso inflamatorio que afecta al nervio óptico, y que puede presentarse de forma aislada (monofásica) o recurrente. La etiología más frecuente son las enfermedades desmielinizantes del SNC, como la esclerosis múltiple (EM) o los trastornos del espectro de la Neuromielitis óptica (NMOSD). Del 3-5% de los casos de NO tienen un curso recurrente (NOR) en ausencia de una enfermedad de base neurológica o sistémica.
