Boundary accessibility and elliptic harmonic measures

1988

Suppose G is a bounded domain in R n such that the complement of G satisfies a capacity dcnsity condition. It is shown that all elliptic measures in G have a support set with Moreover, the capacity density condition cannot be removed. A nonlinear version of the result is also given.

Form-perturbation theory for higher-order elliptic operators and systems by singular potentials

2020

We give a form-perturbation theory by singular potentials for scalar elliptic operators onL2(Rd)of order 2mwith Hölder continuous coefficients. The form-bounds are obtained from anL1functional analytic approach which takes advantage of both the existence ofm-gaussian kernel estimates and the holomorphy of the semigroup inL1(Rd).We also explore the (local) Kato class potentials in terms of (local) weak compactness properties. Finally, we extend the results to elliptic systems and singular matrix potentials. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Semigroup applications everywhere’.

Lp-uniqueness for elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients in RN

AbstractLet A be an elliptic operator with unbounded and sufficiently smooth coefficients and let μ be a (sub)-invariant measure of the operator A. In this paper we give sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the closure of the operator (A,Cc∞(RN)) generates a sub-Markovian strongly continuous semigroup of contractions in Lp(RN,μ). Applications are given in the case when A is a generalized Schrödinger operator.

ω-hypoelliptic differential operators of constant strength

2004

Abstract We study ω-hypoelliptic differential operators of constant strength. We show that any operator with constant strength and coefficients in E ω (Ω) which is homogeneous ω-hypoelliptic is also σ-hypoelliptic for any weight function σ=O(ω). We also present a sufficient condition in order to ensure that a differential operator admits a parametrix and, as a consequence, we obtain some conditions on the weights (ω,σ) to conclude that, for any operator P(x,D) with constant strength, the σ-hypoellipticity of the frozen operator P(x0,D) implies the ω-hypoellipticity of P(x,D). This requires the use of pseudodifferential operators.

Modelling of Systems with a Dispersed Phase: “Measuring” Small Sets in the Presence of Elliptic Operators

2016

When modelling systems with a dispersed phase involving elliptic operators, as is the case of the Stokes or Navier-Stokes problem or the heat equation in a bounded domain, the geometrical structure of the space occupied by the dispersed phase enters in the homogenization process through its capacity, a quantity which can be used to define the equivalence classes in \(H^1\). We shall review the relationship between capacity and homogenization terms in the limit when the number of inclusions becomes large, focusing in particular on the situation where the distribution of inclusions is not necessarily too regular (i.e. it is not periodic).

Spherical Harmonics Expansion of Fundamental Solutions and Their Derivatives for Homogeneous Elliptic Operators

2017

In this work, a unified scheme for computing the fundamental solutions of a three-dimensional homogeneous elliptic partial differential operator is presented. The scheme is based on the Rayleigh expansion and on the Fourier representation of a homogeneous function. The scheme has the advantage of expressing the fundamental solutions and their derivatives up to the desired order without any term-by-term differentiation. Moreover, the coefficients of the series need to be computed only once, thus making the presented scheme attractive for numerical implementation. The scheme is employed to compute the fundamental solution of isotropic elasticity showing that the spherical harmonics expansion…

On Computational Properties of a Posteriori Error Estimates Based upon the Method of Duality Error Majorants

2004

In the present paper, we analyze computational properties of the functional type a posteriori error estimates that have been derived for elliptic type boundary-value problems by duality theory in calculus of variations. We are concerned with the ability of this type of a posteriori estimates to provide accurate upper bounds of global errors and properly indicate the distribution of local ones. These questions were analyzed on a series of boundary-value problems for linear elliptic operators of 2nd and 4th order. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical tests in which the duality error majorant for the classical diffusion problem is compared with the standard error indicator used i…

Local Gauge Conditions for Ellipticity in Conformal Geometry

2013

In this article we introduce local gauge conditions under which many curvature tensors appearing in conformal geometry, such as the Weyl, Cotton, Bach, and Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensors, become elliptic operators. The gauge conditions amount to fixing an $n$-harmonic coordinate system and normalizing the determinant of the metric. We also give corresponding elliptic regularity results and characterizations of local conformal flatness in low regularity settings.

Gradient regularity for elliptic equations in the Heisenberg group

2009

Abstract We give dimension-free regularity conditions for a class of possibly degenerate sub-elliptic equations in the Heisenberg group exhibiting super-quadratic growth in the horizontal gradient; this solves an issue raised in [J.J. Manfredi, G. Mingione, Regularity results for quasilinear elliptic equations in the Heisenberg group, Math. Ann. 339 (2007) 485–544], where only dimension dependent bounds for the growth exponent are given. We also obtain explicit a priori local regularity estimates, and cover the case of the horizontal p-Laplacean operator, extending some regularity proven in [A. Domokos, J.J. Manfredi, C 1 , α -regularity for p-harmonic functions in the Heisenberg group for …

Heat semi-group and generalized flows on complete Riemannian manifolds

2011

Abstract We will use the heat semi-group to regularize functions and vector fields on Riemannian manifolds in order to develop Di Perna–Lions theory in this setting. Malliavinʼs point of view of the bundle of orthonormal frames on Brownian motions will play a fundamental role. As a byproduct we will construct diffusion processes associated to an elliptic operator with singular drift.
